It looks like Microsoft released a tool in the latest beta preview that essentially nukes all the manufacturer installed bloatware (and returns it to a “signature-like” state). No guarantees, but I’d assume that makes it into the Anniversary Update that comes out this summer.

It is worse, yes. Crap embedded in the OS is worse than crap from the OEM.

Are yous seriously? Did you see the stuff lenovo was putting on their machines?

http://www.scmagazineuk.com/updated-pc-maker-lenovo-exposes-users-to-massive-security-risk/article/412902/

and is still going on?

Nothing, nothing Microsoft or Windows is doing is comparable to Lenovo.

Also, the advertisements for apps on the start menu can be disabled with a single toggle in settings. Or by just right-clicking any of the ads and disabling them from there.

Crap embedded in the OS is present on 100% of installs. So yes, even though the degree is lesser the pervasiveness matters. I stand by that statement.

I’m finding your view a challenge to understand. Personally, I’d view a minor inconvenience on a difference scale as complete vulnerability that Lenovo created. It’s an epic scale difference.

Since I don’t have much (if any) impact on what Microsoft will or won’t do when it comes to Windows, and this issue is a non issue for me, I’m out. Good Luck with raging against the machine.

Were we all this outraged when Windows 95 installed Solitaire and Minesweeper? Or Windows XP and Maxis’ pinball games?

I am, however, outraged that I didn’t get Minecraft with my Windows 10 install :-(

We were ignorant of our rights and entitlement then. Now, everything is me-first! That’s why!

I’d actually love for them to install that pinball game again. It was a good game.

So, the Messages icon and its messages are now also used for promoting Office apps? Its getting worse all the time… :-/

Nothing’s free, I guess!

.@Microsoft creates tool for removing bloatware from your @Windows 10 PC: http://www.lowyat.net/2016/107880/microsoft-creates-tool-for-removing-bloatware-from-windows-10/

Oh! The irony!

They want to fully claim ‘their’ platform (like Apple does), and to be fair it IS their platform. Trouble is Windows has a history of not being a locked down curated OS, and so much good (productivity) has come from that, it certainly feels like a misdirection over what they could be doing with their platform and wealth?

Is there a list of exactly what this tool will remove? Will it remove any of their own bloatware (see Candy Crush et al above)? Or is it just so you can get back to a Microsoft approved level of ‘vanilla’ bloat?

It seems it will also remove Microsoft Office and I guess it still very much depends of MS definition of clean install. I wonder if it will remove that “Get Office 365” tile that’s also come with a clean install.

HELPS , I have an older backup pc with Win 7 that I want to put 10 on, I ran the check tool and it said my network adapter was not found. I checked device manager and the driver was from 2011, so I updated that to a 2015 driver. But how in the heck to I get the Win10 check tool to re-scan the system?

I tried the info found on this page : http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/operating-systems/how-to-get-windows-10-if-it-won-t-install-1300605

But it still shows the last scan as 6/19/16 and not todays date. Its like it won’t update even though it says its checked.

I had two laptops which the Windows 10 compatibility tool indicated weren’t compatible with Windows 10. I upgraded both of 'em to Windows 10 without a problem. Be sure you have the network card driver downloaded (just in case) and run the install from a USB stick, but chances are you’ll be fine!

Aleck

chin rubbin USB you say… gonna give that a go next, hope it works!

And I didn’t even have to go the USB option, I clicked the upgrade now option on this page and it worked!

Congratulations!
