My laptop also seems slower. My Desktop seems a lot faster. Maybe reboot a few times?

And for some reason my headphone jack on my laptop no longer works. Argggg

EDIT: just had to find some audio driver upgrades (No Windows 10 driver support for it on dell.)

Windows 10 will drag for a few hours as it re-indexes your files. Just give it some time.

One of the things you lose moving to W10 is the DVD codecs. It’s not that expensive to purchase, but if you had it in XP (or even in W7), I don’t think it carries over to W10.

Also, Windows Media Server SKU is no longer available in W10. I am sort of bummed about this because while I had Windows Media Server installed on a few machines, I never actually built a media server.

My plan was probably optimistic, and didn’t work - I only got as far as Windows 7, and lost my network adapter so I couldn’t get online to update to Windows 10 anyway. Think the adapter was on an nforce6 board - I found what i thought were win7 drivers for it and installed them, but no luck. And then it was after the midnight deadliune anyway. So I basically trashed my 2006 computer, it seems, so I guess I’ll just take out the hard drive and destroy it and throw the computer in the trash.

I decided not to bite the bullet. My laptop works just fine with Win7, and by the time using Win7 becomes an issue from an updating or driver perspective, it’ll have long been replaced by a newer machine anyway (with, presumably, Win10 preinstalled on it). Why risk it? As for my desktop, well I’m overseas anyway so I couldn’t access it. If I could, having seen Win10 now, I’m happy to stick with Win7. Again, it works exactly as I want it to work, and Win10 seems similar enough that all I’m doing is having to set everything back up again. At least when I do eventually upgrade, I won’t avoid it like the plague as I did with Win8.

you are smart. My brother in law called me just a day ago asking if it’s worth upgrading his old laptop which was running Win 7 and I said why not? He probably could get a few mileage out of the old system as Win 10 needs less memory and space. And so he followed my advise and let the update run overnigh. He woke up to the Thinkpad not being able to detect the hard disk anymore. I think it’s not Win 10’s fault but I felt guilty recommending him to update and running his notebook through unnecessary stress. Ugh!!! Strike two!

I really like it so far - it’s very quickly become my favorite windows operating system. I’m sure I’ll discover things I dislike, but right now it’s like a substantially improved Windows 7 that treats Windows 8 as a mulligan and ignores it for the most part. Still discovering tons of cool stuff like the way windows organize themselves into layouts (similar but better to prior o/s, and the default video app streams to other devices far better than any prior included player did. Everything is neat and organized and customizable - I just love it.

Do people actually use the Microsoft browser? Seems like a significant improvement over prior IEs. Both Chrome and Firefox seem to work better in Win10 too, so I’m not sure which to use - prob stick with Firefox for now because it’s what I’m most used to, but it feels like that might be the 3rd best choice.

I am sticking to Chrome. I am not sure Edge is compatible with many websites. But I do launch it once a while as I like the news that it uncannily recommend for me.

I use Chrome basically because it syncs with my phone, tablet and computers easily. I don’t have anything negative to say about the Win 10 browser though… only IE lost me awhile ago for reasons other than Win 10.

Coming down to the deadline I decided to stick with 8.1 and Startisback. I don’t really see a downside honestly. By the time dx12 matters I’ll likely build a new system anyway and if Vulkan takes off it won’t matter.

From a purely gaming perspective I feel just fine.

That’s the way I feel too. MS did well incorporating feedback on its recent OS forays in this one.

Wendelius

I installed, rolled back when W10 was first available.

I installed W10 again couple nights ago as the deadline loomed. Why not, I thought, I had everything imaged.

My mouse wheel stopped working. I googled. It was useless. I tried all sorts of logitech drivers. Uninstalled anything that could possibly “hook” the mouse behavior. blah blah blah. Wasted an hour or two on this.

Under Logitech’s compatability charts, this 2007 G9 had W10 compatability with an *. Nowhere did it explain what the * stood for. I assumed I was shit out of luck and ordered a new mouse.

Then last night the mouse wheel suddenly worked for 3 lines on a webpage. I decide to clean the mousewheel out. It works again!

Thanks, Microsoft. It wasn’t W10’s fault.

No, because it doesn’t support addons. That will be fixed in the anniversary update, though.

That anniversary edition should bring some cool functions to the computer.

Unsurprisingly, you can still upgrade to Win10 for free. No expiration date..

Thanks Obama!

Well, it’s for a particular group of people, and they have been talking about that for the last 3 or 4 month on windows weekly.

I’m starting to use it now only in the anniversary update since it finally supports extensions. That goes out to the world starting next Tuesday. But when Edge works, it’s more battery efficient for me, scrolling is much smoother, text is rendered better, so it’s nice to use now.

I wonder if or how they validate you are eligible for that. But yes they did announce this for accessibility users a few months ago.
