Go through all the checks for sound and make sure the proper sound option is selected.
Disable automatic driver updates in Windows.
I agree with the comments about switching to USB for audio. I’ve never had issues with USB. I use a FiiO headphone amp.
I frequently have to right click on the speaker, go to audio devices, and disable/enable. USB headset, speakers connected to motherboard, Occulus headset. Is there an app or utility that makes this quicker?
Aside from the above suggestions, could it be related to this?
I am going to have to buy Windows 10 sometime before January 20. I just wish I could save the $200 and instead get a new PC with the OS preinstalled. (MS no longer offers Windows for free to students like they used to. This also applies to stuff like SQL Server which I will probably need eventually.)
[edit]
Never mind. I can upgrade to Windows 10 Education for free if I have any copy of Windows installed currently, including Windows 7. I am going to bite the bullet. Goodby, Windows 7! :sniff:
Second that recommendation. I use a FiiO USB DAC/amp at work to bypass the cheapo audio on my laptop. Huge improvement.
Fun thing about that. There’s a Realtek driver update, for Dell systems at least, where the driver will fail to start. Therefore, no more sound. It’s apparently tagged as a security update, not a driver update. We’re having lots of fun with this at my workplace.
Does the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool not work for updates anymore? I was able to update to Win 10 fall of last year and didn’t need to enter a product key.
…to answer my own question I see you’re on Win 7. I was on 8.1 which probably played into not needing a new key.
Good luck with the upgrade!
It let me do a full install.
It went smoothly except for one thing: when I went to delete the system partition, it deleted my “Programs” partition too. Luckily my data was on a different drive, so was unaffected. But I lost some old programs I had been collecting for years. I’m not sure I have them backed up anywhere.
In the past I mainly used Windows 10 inside a VM. Now that it is on my host system, I am feeling “car sick”. The color contrast is way too high. There is too much padding around everything. The fonts… I am playing around with WindowBlinds, but it only helps a little.
*barf*
If I can adjust to it, anyone can, including you, dammit!
But seriously, when I went to Win 10 three years ago, I didn’t notice any of that stuff you’re talking about. I mean, it’s possible I did notice it, and then simply adjusted I guess. But I have no memory of it.
Anyway, now that I’ve been assimilated, I’ve actually come to like it. I mean, I don’t love it, but I’ve never loved an OS, and it seems every bit as good as Win 7 (I skipped the 8’s entirely).
If I had one thing to complain about, it would be the updates, but even those have (so far) been fairly quick and unobtrusive. I’m certain my opinion will change the first time an update should break something, but so far so good.
In other words, don’t worry; you’ll come around. ;-)
I think part of the problem is that the screen “fades” depending on the angle you look at it with, and this is more noticeable now that the graphics are very light and very dark.

My turn to get screwed by Windows Update. No sound coming out from my speakers. And, then I notice that Windows was not able to update to 1903 because “this PC has unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware”. I never get this UEFI thingy before… what should I do?

Thanks. My BIOS is UEFI but the boot disk (NVMe SSD) is MBR instead of GPT. The only way to do that, according to the help in the link, is to reinstall, which I find is totally ridiculous. Can’t believe MS need me to reinstall whole windows just to get my sound working :roll eyes:
Gross.
Well, you can try this
https://www.easeus.com/partition-manager-software/free-convert-mbr-to-gpt-without-data-loss.html
But presumably if it fubars anything you’d end installing fresh anyway.
According to your link, you’d need to do that to upgrade to the latest feature release. Nothing to do with sound, other than 1903 can apparently break sound. But there’s a subsequent rollup that includes a fix for that particular issue. Please focus your rage appropriately :-)
