Just match destination format every time you paste in the new content. Granted it can still go weird sometimes.
Also, always do your formatting with formatting symbols on. That helps a lot to see what is going on.
Which unfortunately will not work for content that contain structure. For trivial scenarios with a few lines at a time, it’s fine. When it comes to list, headers, footnotes, citations, differently styled sections, Word is a not easy to work with. A simple table alone requires more than reasonable time to get right.

So @tomchick didn’t need to reinstall Windows after all?
He didn’t have to, but maybe he did it just for fun.
It’s Patch Tuesday, as well as the release of Windows 1909. Compared to previous Windows 10 releases, this is much smaller and installs just like a regular cumulative update.

The increasingly poorly named 1909. They never got them out in September, but in previous years at least they made October.
This update is particularly important for people with Zen 2 CPUs as it supports favored cores. Zen 2 is unique in that every core isn’t rated to the same max speed. Previously Windows wasn’t aware of that and could put single or lightly threaded stuff on slower cores.
Knowing MS I think I’ll wait a few months before installing it, just to get the BSOD’s, slowdowns, crashes and file deletion out of the way on someone elses setup first.
We’re updating the search box in File Explorer to now be powered by Windows Search. This change will help integrate your OneDrive content online with the traditional indexed results. More details here.
Another thing to block I suppose.
So I’ve got some lite ping spikes over wifi. I’ve spent a lot of time looking into this and can’t figure it out. The below output is after a reboot, and it gets slightly worse over time, with spikes hitting 80ms.
My wife’s PC (my old PC) doesn’t have this issue, which strongly suggests it’s something to do with Windows. I’m thinking about doing A Window Reset. Does a Reset actually help anything? Anyone have an experience with it? I would have to have it keep all my files.

Are you in an area where the band/channel your router is using crowded or the signal strength otherwise noticeably fluctuates?
It’s possible the system is occasionally attempting to find a better AP/channel depending on how auto-configuration is set up.
Windows 1909 installed this morning (along with 1903, which somehow I had avoided ever getting). Both installed smooth as silk.
1909 is basically a service pack. All the other major Windows 10 semi-annual updates installed a new version of Windows and moved the existing Windows installation to the old.Windows folder.
1909 doesn’t do that. It’s like a regular monthly cumulative update.
No. I even bought a new, more powerful router, an AC3100. And when that didn’t help, I put the old router, an AC1900, into AiMesh mode. I’m very close to the AC1900. My speed as reported by windows on the lone AC1900 was around 800Mb. Now on the mesh it’s 1.3Gb.
And the wife’s computer, which is even further away and has the same wifi card, is fine. :-/
I was getting spotty wifi until I changed to a different channel. There are apps that can tell you about all the nearby routers, their signal strengths, and the channels they are using. I switched to a channel where there were fewer and weaker nearby signals.
I got a Windows 10 update today and it destroyed HDR support. Again. I played Madden 19 yesterday and it looked great. Today? It’s super, super dark and washed out and the only way to fix it is to run in a window because the game forces HDR. Which no longer works properly. Because of the update.
Because apparently Microsoft needs to hire someone who knows what HDR is.

Fixed it for you.
HDR in windows been shit always for me on 1903, but at least works in gamez.
Not sure it helps, but did you notice the spikes are happening consistently at 15 seconds apart when they happen? Do you know of any bursty network traffic which we can trace to that time interval, like OneDrive or Dropbox sync or something?
There is no consistency. I have shut down a lot of things and uninstalled anything that looked like it might be fuckin’ with the network stack, including some Intel network thing. But nothing has worked. I suppose I should try Safe Mode.
Download Ubuntu Linux to a USB drive and boot off that to repeat the test.
Doing a test that way takes windows, and in fact all software/drivers, from your current PC out of the mix. Then try your ping test. If it doesn’t recur in Ubuntu it’s something you need to fix in your PC. If it does recur, it’s a wifi issue.
Thanks, I’ll give that a shot. It’s really weird. I have my PowerShell buffer set to 3000 lines, and scrolling up the first spike is 1/3 of the way up… which means the top of the buffer is ~2000 lines without a single spike. Of course I’m playing XCOM2 right now and don’t care about my ping at all. And other times, like when I’m playing Conan Exiles, there is a spike 2-5% of the time.
