Is there a big market for this? I see an opportunity where we harken back to the days of dumb terminals being served out of a centrally controller host for families. I understand the need to have gateways and monitors of our children’s access to information, given the trash that is out there.
it seems quite contrary to traditional western values, this monitoring bit.
But if there is a demand for things like this, I can see someone building a biz to go back to the central host with dumb terminals for kids.
I’m not sure what you were reading. A single $50 license lets you use the software to connect to as many computers as you want.

TeamViewer is free but has nag screens. NoMachine is also good locally and free for home use.
Theoretically you can also get a list of currently running processes over the network from a command line. Never tried before (and I keep getting access denied - so probably some other setup required)
https://ss64.com/nt/wmic.html
Something like
wmic /node:ip_or_name /user:username /password:password process
You’d need to be on a command line that is elevated to an account that has admin rights on the target machine.
Also, tasklist would be simpler.
Thanks for all the advice. I tried NoMachine and it worked better than I expected. The only flaw is you can only access one computer per window. However I am able to open the program multiple times and that allows me to view multiple desktops at the same time. Big plus, it’s FREE and it’s easy enough to use that an old curmudgeon like me can use it.
Mellified, you were correct I only needed to buy one license. It wasn’t clear on their site and I needed to dig deep into the support page to find that information. However it does appear that I may need to purchase more than one license if I wanted to multiple computers to remote access other computers and pay a renewal fee if I wanted to getting access over the internet.
I use the one Windows and one Mac license I purchased where I need them without an issue. I also have the iOS version. I have a dozen or so computers running Remotix Agent.
One feature you may find useful is being able to visit the web site and grab a screenshot of any connected computer. If I understand your use case you could buy one license (with maintenance) and use that to check up on the kids.

I can’t find the answer to this because I don’t know what it’s called. But how do you turn off when you drag a window and it jumps/glides to what I guess is where it thinks you want it to go. It’s weird, and often goes off the side of the screen etc. It drives me nuts.
Does that make sense?

It’s called Snap Assist and can be disabled in Settings.

Thanks. I like the edges and corner snaps, but sometimes when moving a window it doesn’t snap to a corner, it kind of floats beyond where I want it to go. I will play with these settings, thank you.
I use Windows Key + Arrow keys to snap the windows. Much easier than using the mouse. It even handles multiple monitors in an intuitive way.

There is a MS Power Toys which has a feature called Fancy Zone which lets you do Shift and drag windows to snap them into your predetermine zones across all monitors. Pretty neat. Try it.
There is some weird gesture that hides all open windows. Whatever the flip it is I want to shoot it until it’s dead because I never want to hide all the windows.
Are you triggering “Peek”? Hotspot at the right end of the taskbar. Hover and temporarily see desktop. Click and minimize all windows. Can be disabled in Settings -> Personalize -> Taskbar.
If you’re pressing Windows+M or Windows+D all I can offer is “don’t do that” :D
Or you can try this:

I see a stationary PC has power settings as well. Is there any noticeable difference between the medium (recommended) and high performance settings?
I’m sure there’s more, but it does turn off options that enable CPU power management.
So you end up at max clock & voltage 24/7 regardless of load
If you dare: Windows 10 May 2020 Update is live.
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2020/05/27/how-to-get-the-windows-10-may-2020-update/
Microsoft will only make it available for those who manually seek it out on Windows Update for now. As they get more data back, they’ll slowly push it out to more and more users, based on hardware and software.
Media Creation Tool is also updated
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
I upgraded, no issues. It’s fine, no new features you’d notice other than WSL2, if you care about that.
Is this the update that includes the Spotlight-like search feature? That might be fun to play around with, even though I’m still not sure how it will be different from current search. I guess the big deal will be the plug-ins. Maybe there will be an Everything type plugin.
