The only issue with the drive is Windows 10 trying to destroy it. So just have to remember to keep it turned off on bootup – once I have fixed it again. Never had such an issue in the years I’ve been using Windows. Sure, I’ve had HDs break because they came from Seagate, or the famous IBM Deathstars, but not this - ever. And with the lack of agency that Windows 10 introduces, you no longer get a question “Do you want us to do this”, Windows 10 knows best, and goes ahead - no prompt or anything.
god damn it.

Probably time to get a different USB enclosure. Got to be something wonky with the drivers.
I use an app from the Microsoft Store named “Account Surfer” as my default browser. It lets me pick which browser I want to open the URL in. It stopped working, giving a Javascript error when I opened something.
I used the repair function from Settings -> Apps -> Advanced and… holy shit, it actually fixed the problem. Nice to see something with the Microsoft Store working as intended, even if it is buried.
LOL - I feel your amazement. Took me way too long to get Microsoft Store to even open not that long ago.

Got the new 8TB drive installed now, and moved some SSDs around, figured I’d clean up the cable management inside the case at the same time, AND fix my PCIE 8x issue (my 1070 wouldn’t go 16x).
Now to move the files to the 8TB then try restoring the rest.
My license for DMDE ran out, so not sure I’ll renew or use something else. Annoying when you buy a shareware app for 20$ and one year later you can no longer launch the same exact version…
Didn’t want to create a Bill G thread, but figured this was MS-related.
Bill Gates Sr passed away last night at 95. He was a major figure in the Seattle area. He cofounded one of Seattle’s most powerful law firms. He was a regent at the University of Washington, like his wife was before she died of cancer. And, of course, he fathered Bill Gates III.
I’ve never met Bill Gates, but I did run into senior a couple of times. You couldn’t miss him. He was a giant (6’7"). BillG is only 5’10, in comparison.
Anyway, just felt like posting.
What a shorty!
(I’m 5’10".)
RIP
This isn’t technically a Windows 10 thing, but what security genius thought it was a good idea not to give MS Authenticator users any way to see where their 2FA requests are coming from, while also reauthenticating various MS apps periodically in the background? Well done, you’ve just rendered 2FA completely useless.
Windows 10 20H2 is now available, although that depends on whether MS is making it available for your configuration at this time.
My Surface Pro showed the update in Windows Update. All my other systems did not. Updated using the Upgrade Assistant, which is a mistake. The Windows Update method downloads and installs and restarts within about 3 minutes; this is not a major update and installs just like a regular monthly patch. Meanwhile, using the Upgrade Assistant basically installs a fresh copy of Windows and takes forever.

Best not to try to force it, if windows update doesn’t offer it to you just wait. It’s not like it offers any features what-so-freaking-ever, this is their yearly minor update.

I had an update that was oh 6-8 months out that supposedly had something do with software or hardware installed on my machine not yet ready for it.
I prefer others to beta test windows updates for me anyway. This last one seems to have given ne some sort of Nvidia Audio controller I can’t get rid of permanently.
This actually looks pretty neat and useful now
Maybe MS should create something like Playnite too?
I have been using the new Edge browser for awhile now, since they upgraded it over the summer, and I quite like it, but I’ve noticed (mostly on Qt3) that when I copy and paste a link it likes to auto-format it for me with a title. This can be really annoying, so if anyone else has noticed this and wondered how to disable it, you can, and it’s easy to do.
Thanks for posting this. This was driving me nuts last week when I was trying to send my son a link over Hangouts. Thought it was a Hangouts issue :P
I use Edge solely for work stuff so I don’t have to cross-pollinate it with my personal stuff on Firefox and it’s, honestly, a damned fine browser.
Except for that copy paste nonsense which I also turned off.
Same here - Firefox at home, Edge for work. I’ve been finding that I use Edge more and more at home though. I find Edge’s collections work really well, and bookmarks in general are better in Edge.
Yeah if Edge was better about sharing tabs between desktop and mobile, something Firefox excels at, then I’d likely switch, honestly.
