This morning I have a Windows Update option for 1511 again.
I was under the impression that the preview didnt get you an auto in. You still needed 7 or 8 to get the actually windows 10 edition.

How the hell is that cost effective? I’ve been hearing for years that any customer who calls support is by definition an unprofitable customer, thanks to the overhead for support staff, etc. MS appears to be so eager to de-authorize any of these “free” Win10 installs that it can, that it will fund a call center to make a few exceptions to the default status of de-authorization.
Because “fuck you, pay us more money to keep using what you thought you already owned” is such a nice thing to hear from a business partner.

Yep, I was able to pull down the new MCT with 1511 and do a clean install with my Win7Pro key (which correctly installed Win10Pro as well).

If you need to buy a new key, Kinguin has win10 pro keys for like $15 these days. So at least you don’t have to pay out the ass for MS to, well, you know. In the ass.

I know I’m late to this party but why not give a single data point? I did the upgrade from Win8.1 64 to Win 10 64 a week or so ago. It took a long fucking time. Something like 10 hours, including system resets. Since that time I have used Shutup10 and the new TweakUI to get things to where I want them.
So far so good. I’d even say that Win 10 makes Fallout 4 load quicker.

Is that legit? I mean I have never gotten anything from them, but they basically do sell legitimate keys right?
I don’t really need one obviously, but an extra or two might come in handy if I change out hardware or build something for my kids.

It’s most likely a grey-market key, but it will work. Be sure to pay the extra buck for their “insurance”, in case it doesn’t.

Last update solved BSOD finally :)
Such an odd concept to me, but I appreciate the advice.

It might work, but at that price, it’s definitely not “legit.” Pretty sure the $1 “insurance” fee is a pretty good indicator something’s awry here. :)
When it began there was no requirement for an existing 7 or 8 license. And they just promised Win 10 for free to testers with no qualifications. It was only after the program had been going for most of a year and the final release was approaching that they started backtracking and saying you were really supposed to have a preexisting 7 or 8 key. But since everyone of those was being offered the free upgrade to 10 it makes their original offer of a free license for testers fairly hollow. As I said I was OK until I did an upgrade at which point MS washed their hands of me.

The codes are from resellers, and that fee is just in case they try to rip you off. I’ve made around a dozen purchases from kinguin so far, and never had any problems. Of course if I stopped buying insurance, I have no doubt the universe would notice very quickly.
So, has anyone else checking out the sales on the windows stores. I scored a few albums for christmas, and a few apps, but I think the movie rentals are a real treat. Just saw Spy again.
I was in this boat as well, and I actually had Windows 10 RTM fully activated and ready to go on this computer…and then my SSD died. When I replaced the SSD and installed 10 again it told me I needed to buy a Windows 10 key to activate.
From my understanding, this should never happen, because your 10 activation is tied to your machine’s hardware ID and your Microsoft account, and the only thing I changed was an SSD (and I changed it to an identical model at that). After going through some chat session with one of their techs, she informed me that I needed to “reinstall the Technical Preview and let it update to the latest version” and that would activate my PC. It did not.
On the other hand, so far Insider builds have been coming fast enough that the “evaluation license” on them doesn’t have a chance to expire. So bad show on Microsoft’s part but hasn’t had a practical effect – so far.

What a nightmare win10 activation has turned out to be. It was so easy before; if you called MS they would fix it, flat-out. No longer.
And apparently they’re actually free. I’ve rented three movies since last night and have yet to be charged. Maybe they charge you after the rental period is up?
They’re probably waiting a few days to charge you all at once, otherwise the credit card fees on 10-cent transactions would be doubly murderous.
Yeah, that’s my guess having done like 20 $0.10 so far. The albums are the real deal since they don’t go away like a movie rental and are being discounted from ~$10.
