Will I be able to keep my files, settings, and apps if I install Windows 8.1 Preview?

If you move from the preview to the final, it’s basically a clean install with data migration. You’ll have to reinstall stuff.

No, from 8.1 preview to 8.1 RTM. It’s not uncommon for preview versions to require a full reinstall, as the supported upgrade path is only from an RTM version of a previous release.

Oh, forget it, then. I’ll wait for RTM on my PC.

Hmm, might put it on my Surface RT, though, to check it out.

Surface RT is barely affected by it at all, thanks to the start screen and app roaming features introduced in 8.1.

  1. Upgrade Surface from Win8 to 8.1 preview
  2. Start screen layout and installed apps now sync to skydrive in 8.1 preview
  3. Upgrade to 8.1 final - even though technically apps need to be reinstalled, it’s a non-issue since your start screen layout and installed apps roam automatically from skydrive.

I’m still using Win 7 Pro 64 on my desktop, but I am intrigued by this. What sort of “under the hood” improvements would I see with Windows 8.1 (a pro, 64 bit version)?

Improvements from Windows 7 or since Windows 8?

If you’re looking for a long list of stuff that changed between Windows 7 and Windows 8, you can take a look at the blog posts here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/

For stuff that’s changed between 8 and 8.1, I’d just take a look at sites like engadget and the verge for now.

Good info in that blog. Thanks.

I’ve worked on Windows since 7 so if you have any general questions I’d be happy to help.

Hobel over on the Verge forums put together a pretty nice list of changes between 8.0 and 8.1.

○ For free

○ Via Windows Store

○ Users can decide if and when to upgrade

○ Users will get the same kind of notification for the final version as they did for the preview

○ Preview testers will have to reinstall the apps after installing the final version (data and accounts are preserved)

○ Users who didn’t install the preview will not have to reinstall apps (data, accounts, settings and apps are preserved)

○ Recovery partition will not be replaced if you deleted it in Windows 8

So, reading that, I can upgrade from the preview to the final later this year and the only thing I have to do is reinstall my Win8 apps, which are already listed for me on the Store?

I believe you will also need to reinstall all your win32 desktop programs.

Yes, you have to reinstall all applications.

I have UI in your UI!

(snort)

Too true, too true.

What the hell happened to his eyes and teeth? He looks like a lobotomized Bugs Bunny.

PA does make a good point. People weren’t asking for the return of the Start button because they wanted a button to get to Metro. They were asking for it because they wanted to stay on the desktop and launch programs via the Start menu. Either Microsoft is completely tone deaf or it really was a bit of an FU.

There are two changes in win8.0. The first is that the start button is gone and you can be left bewildered with no clue how to start your programs. Forgive me for beating a dead horse, but the hot corner is not discoverable. The start button in win8.1 fixes that. The second change is the start screen versus the old start panel. That change, they didn’t revert.

I’m personally fine with that. I don’t mind the start screen, although I do feel it has its problems that aren’t addressed in win8.1; in particular shutdown/restart should be on there, and win32 apps should be able to create rich tiles too. But of course your preferences may vary.

They did fix the biggest problem with win8.0 in 8.1; the segmented search. That was an abomination.

Speaking of search, having used Mac OS X for the past one year and being so used to spotlight instantly a showing me files, how do I get Win 8 to index my file names? I normally don’t search in Win 8 and tonight I have a need to look for a files. In the Charms, I did highlight Files but there was no result.
