They still show up in alt-tab, so that’s a non starter.

Looks like I am using Metro to the maximum of its capabilities :)

(Task Manager for App Usage)

That said; The news application looks quite nice- Could imagine using it if I had a surface tablet in the kitchen, could slide around on it while eating breakfast.

Well, I close all the apps in my phone, because otherwise it runs out of memory and starts to act weird so yeah, I want to that here as well. Thanks for the info about closing the apps - that works quite well, and is what my coworker told me this morning. Its just weird how hidden away all these things are.

Upgraded to 8.1 today - really liking some of the changes. One nice thing that is set by default is that it scales Metro apps independently from the desktop. I have my desktop (2560x1440) with scaling all the way off, but some system wide stuff (alt-tab, popup messages) follow the Metro scaling setting (currently ‘Default’) so they appear a bit larger. I’m not sure if I’ll leave it that way but it’s kind of nice right now - plus most Metro apps don’t really benefit from the huge resolution.

Booting to the desktop sure is nice.

My upgrade failed twice without really telling me why (it rolled back). Digging into the logs it turns out I didn’t have enough free space on my C drive (SSD). Once I got it to about 15 gig free everything went smoothly. And the real surprise is that when it was done, I have 36 gigs free. Apparently they’ve consolidated stuff in 8.1 or maybe cleared out some of the Installer cache. Sure is nice to have a fair amount of free space on C again.

Yes, especially on RT there’s been a huge push to clean up used disk space.

I don’t remember what the final numbers are, but I think you can upgrade an RT device with as little as 2-3GB free, and at the end of the process, you’ll have 5+ GB extra available to you.

Decided to try the built in “Reset” option today due to ongoing and frustrating issues with Win8.
Unfortunately, it’s failing without giving an error message and just sending me back to Desktop - so the only option is to do a fresh install.

The longer I use Win8, the more frustrating niggles that pop up.

You might as well try the Win 8.1 upgrade on that first, then… nothing to lose!

I assume the upgrade will not work if my users folder is on another hard drive than the rest of my install?

Where is it available from? Had a quick Google and everywhere mentions October.

editI see a preview is available, will this be upgrade able at release or will it be like the Win8 preview that required a fresh install when Win8 launched?

AFAIK the Win 8.1 preview is NOT upgrade-able to the release version.

According to a link posted upthread, the final version is available if you jump through some hoops.

I would never actually do that for my primary OS, but it is possible.

Interesting. I’m about to do it right now. My home primary OS has all the important bits on data drives or in the cloud. Nuking the OS if it backfires is fairly trivial.

Not sure if this is related to Windows 8 specifically or not, but on my new laptop which has Windows 8, I am unable to extract files (Modules for warband into a directory under ProgramX86/Mount And Blade Warband/modules/ with Winrar - it just says the directory does not exist. Am I looking at some new windows 8 directory size restrictions? It works fine if I unpack at where it is, and then just copy the files over there afterwards which I find weird.

Program Files is write-protected for non-administrators, and I guess you weren’t running WinRAR with admin permissions. Were you always running as admin on your older PC?

That makes sense, thanks! and yeah, I always run things as administrator. How does one make sure programs are opened as administrator then, when its rar files I open, and not the winrar program itself?

I don’t think that’s possible. You’d need to start WinRAR as admin first, or else give your account permanent admin permissions if you really want to forgo that protection.

Aha -that sounds like what I want to do exactly that, since thats how I’ve used windows for oh…all of the time I’ve ever used windows. Any hints on how to do that? Is it just to remove the annoying pop-up everyime I try to start or install a program?

Check your user account. If you’re the only user on that installation you should already have an admin account, but User Account Control (UAC) prevents you from doing admin things unless you confirm that pop-up window. (And I’ve found that some 3rd party software will just not work, without showing the pop-up window.) So you’d need to turn off UAC. Go to Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts and click Change User Account Control Settings, then move the slider to Never Notify.

Thanks - I knew about the UAC and where to find it. My account IS an admin account, so its a bit strange I can’t unpack the mod files. Anyways, I’ll try turning off the UAC and see if that helps :-)

Thanks for the help! I’m getting close to my regular windows experience, especially since I havent been on the weird frontpage once since I turned on the computer a few days ago ;-)

Oh, one last thing - Why would some 3rd party programs not work when the UAC is turned OFF? I’d assume it was the other way around?

Edit: Just tested the unpacking of mods into the Program Files directory…now I get an “Acces denied” error??
