If you right click the exe and select properties:
You can click the lower button here to always run it as Administrator.

I tried that, and I still am not allowed to create a new folder there through Winrar. So weird! I guess its a permissions thing? I never did figure out how to change those.

I suppose you can give it a go with PROCMON from Sysinternals to see exactly what the application tries to do.
Quick walkthrough:
Download - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
Start it
Stop it after a few seconds since it will spew out information (A bit depressing to see how much is running non stop on your system even without any user interaction)
Right click process names on the listing and select to ‘exclude’ (The alternative would be to “include” in the filter the Winrar process when you run it, but there will be o-so-much listed there so it will be hard to spot).
Now, after you filtered a lot of stuff out, clear the listing and start logging again
Then do your winrar thing.
Once it fails, stop process monitor
On the right hand side, you can for example choose to ‘exclude’ success, so you will only see failures, access denied, buffer overflow, etc…
If you get an access denied on winrar, you can see where it tried to go – and hopefully fix that some other way ;)
Eh? No, it is the other way round… they don’t show the pop-up that should appear when it’s on. Did I mistype?
Edit: Just tested the unpacking of mods into the Program Files directory…now I get an “Acces denied” error??
Interesting. The magic of Google tells me that Windows 7 introduced a feature I wasn’t aware of: the hidden true administrator account! So your “administrator” account actually isn’t, even with UAC turned off. You still need to manually elevate to full admin permissions for some actions, or alternatively enable the hidden admin account. See for example here or here.
On the other hand… you might want to simply re-enable UAC and live with it, since Microsoft is clearly determined to make running as admin as difficult as possible. Just saying. :)

Okay, something here is seriously wrong - Why do I have to jump through hoops like that to be able to unpack zip files into a directory of my choice? And the hidden thing from Windows 7 can’t be it. I had windows 7 before this, and I unpacked a lot of things directly into the Program Files directory without any trouble.
This is exactly the kind of shit that makes me reconsider going back to Windows 7. Its not like there is a single feature of windows 8 that I use after all.
Its just so god damn annyoing.

The assumption from Vista onward is that, if you’re regularly dumping stuff into Program Files, you’re Doing It Wrong.
That being said, all it should take to extract stuff into any protected folder is to run your extractor program as admin.

Yeah, only, that doesn’t change a single thing :-)
Its probably easier to move Steam to another directory, to stop me from having to do this in the future, but I do feel like punishing windows 8, but the hassle of actually upgrading to windows 7 makes me hesitant.

Warning for anyone upgrading to 8.1: The install replaced my Asus USB 3.0 drivers (ASMedia USB 3 hub) with some Microsoft ones. These drivers ARE COMPLETE GARBAGE. My guitar interface didn’t work at all with these, and there are reports of corrupted files when accessing hard drives via these drivers.
I replaced with ASMedia drivers from ASUS site (October 2012) and now all is well.
Is it telling that i can buy windows 8 pro for next to nothing, but windows 7 pro costs over a hundred bucks? And even with that i’d go Windows 7 on any new build!
Windows 8 Pro is $140. That’s well over $100. Maybe you’re looking at the upgrade versions, that are running $70? Which isn’t exactly next to nothing.
I got my Windows 8 Professional upgrade for $30 or so which probably qualifies as next to nothing, but I think that was a time-limited deal shortly after release.

The ‘Run as administrator’ thing is confusing because there are actually two settings for it and the one on the Compatibility tab doesn’t seem to actually give it full admin rights. You probably want to go to the Shortcut tab, press the Advanced button there, and then you’ll see another ‘Run as administrator’ checkbox, and that one’s worked better for me.
hmmm…maybe. I was looking on Amazon for a new build i’m working out, and maybe i read it wrong. So they are more of less the same base cost?

oh! That is interesting! I’ll try that once I get home. Thanks for the tip!

Another thing - At times, whenever I try to start a program, everything just freezes. After some time, I can see through the tasklist that its Antimalware executable that is eating up every bit of Disk usage - Anyone know why that is? And if its something I can disconnect?
Not impressed with the range of issues I have so far with Win8
Same thing happened to me, no one could help me, and I had to reimage the computer, which fixed it.

Yeah…seriously considering just nuking it from orbit and installing windows 7. Is it still damn hard to do so because of the new filesystem for the harddisks?
Edit: I am curious if I even CAN install a windows 7 on this machine? I remember something about them being bios locked somehow?

I’m guessing no-one knows anything about windows 8 upgrading to windows 7 then? I held off but now it seems I can’t play Rome: total war, nor Medieval 2 with mods in windows 8 either because of this stupid UAC thing.

Just take ownership of the install directory. Security, add user, your username, then select all privileges.
Or uninstall and reinstall all games outside of Program Files. PROTIP: Never install games (or Steam, Origin etc. game directories) in Program Files.
