The main thing for me is the difficulty I am having with feedback. Specifically, I haven’t quite figured out much of a rhythm to combat, apart from that (apparently) I must stop moving before clicking and waiting on an enemy, after which an animation with questionable clipping occurs and notifies me that I am supposed to strike again at x point. It feels like it needs either more concrete impact or at least a more solid “target lock” approach to attacking. I imagine this will become less problematic as I learn the attacks a little better, and visually they are very appealing…until the moment comes to actually make contact with the enemy.
But I don’t mean to sound like I’m picking a fight about this, I just wanted to be clear about my issues with it. The difficulty isn’t monotonous or anything even on regular difficulties, and the force push attack livened things up a bit. More alchemy can only help, especially if I ever learn how to parry, dodge or block and then time attacks from there.
I do not understand the problem : ). But I guess you will figure it out as you will play. You are using silver sword against creatures and normal one against humans, right?

I’m playing The Witcher for the first time, and I hate to ask this, but does the game get better later on? I’m messing around in the first chapter, doing stuff in the outskirts of Vizima, and have been really underwhelmed so far. Should I stick it out, or throw in the towel once Sacred 2 comes in the mail?
It does get a lot better yes, but if you hate it now you’ll probably still hate it later :)
The combat stays pretty much the same but the social interaction gets funner. At least that’s how it was for me.

Well, once you get something more than the standard 3-hit combos, you can have a blast switching between targets mid-combo and just wrecking everybody. Fixed camera mode helps with figuring out strategies… probably only something that benefits the player on Hard mode though.
Chapter 2 is when a lot of quests open up, so maybe you will like it more. Also playing on hard is a must IMO. As the very least, play until the end of the chapter where all the little quests you’ve been doing come together to plop an agonizing decision in your lap.
It gets much, much better later and there are some things and moments that I never saw in another RPG.The game is really great. But I enjoyed even the first chapter, since I love that world so much.
NO! Patch 1.5 requires The Witcher v1.4. So it’s a kind of con to claim this patch removes DRM, in so far as most people will assume (wrongly) that this is an all inclusive patch. It’s not, so in effect the patch does one “final” disc check in order for it to be installed.
But if you install Witcher EE and then patch 1.5, it immediately uninstalles TAGES, so there should not be any problem.Personally, I had TAGES based Witcher and still have TAGES based Stalker Clear Sky, and I never had a problem.
Is TAGES installed by the installer, or by the game itself when you first run it? Starforce had a workaround where you were fine as long as you applied the check-removing patch immediately, since Starforce wasn’t actually installed until you ran the game itself for the first time.
That was only true for the later Starforce versions. Long after the issues of the day. (The UBISOFT et al saga.)
Anyway, fact is this 1.5 patch that everybody is ga-ga over is nothing more then a con of sorts. It’s like what Blizzard does with new maps for old games (i.e.: WarCfaft III) or patches for old games. (Diablo II et al.) Don’t you get the “fantastic” marketing behind what Blizzard does ? I’m amazed nobody else (important) is doing it. Every download/hobby/fan site will host these new releases and not only will that make most game owners happy, but if nothing else it causes all these sites to bring these games back to the front page which then means a fresh boost for search engines, which means the IP gets a nice and free refresh. Imagine the cost of having most big sites mention your game every few months. A 5+ year old game at that. But by releasing new crap every few months, they do that for free and very willingly.
Anyway, back to The Witcher. Had patch 1.5 been an all inclusive 2.5+GB file that worked with any version including the original retail (v1.0) then people could go ga-ga. As it is, it’s practically cock. Don’t swallow it.

What’s the problem? What’s the con, exactly? Developers supporting a game by adding content and fixing bugs is suddenly… a conspiracy to get more people to buy the game?! It’s a conspiracy to get the game back on the front pages of websites… websites which aren’t run by human beings but by sentient advertising robots, of course.

Yes I agree, if a patch isn’t all-inclusive it’s absolutely useless and nobody should be talking about how much they are enjoying it. They should all be bashing it for having such a shortcoming.
As a side note, we’re not expecting new-release-type coverage for 1.5 or the Director’s Cut. If someone’s nice enough to cover it, awesome :). Right now we’re just trying to keep fans as happy as possible until we’re ready to actually announce our next project.

You guys are bastards for continuing to give us more and more free content with Witcher. I’d appreciate if you’d get your free cocks out of our mouths already!
signed,
dumb people.
Also, it should have installed itself overnight seamlessly and tongued my balls.
I mean if it won’t do that it’s practically worthless what were you guys thinking Tom

Although Brandon is being kind of a loon, he correct in questioning the extent that patch 1.5 removes all DRM. When I was installing The Witcher from scratch recently, I noticed that to install patch 1.4 the game had to phone home and make sure my version was legit. To install patch 1.5 you must have 1.4 installed.
Lol, Brandon, did patch 1.5 eat your baby? :)
I don’t think anyone is really that ga-ga about it, but then again, I don’t really know what it means, so maybe they are.
And it’s not a 5+ year old game. What it is though is probably the best RPG released in the last 5+ years.
Anyway, have any of you guys tried that Combat Revamp mod linked above? I am thinking about replaying the game and a mod like that would be nice but it’s been released only a couple of weeks ago and I am not sure how bug-free and balanced it is.
It means I don’t have to get off my ass and look for the disk, so, that’s a plus.
Weird that someone can get upset about a free patch that introduces/restores content that many North American purchasers were disappointed they missed out on in the first place.
