I had that too, the only time I’ve had activation issues.

The solution? God knows, one day it just worked.

just tried the demo. Is there something wrong with the fighting system? Most likely it’s me, but things are not very responsive.

From what I understand:
Left click is for parrying, right click is for hitting.
If you are fighting an agile foe, you must switch to agile mode or you can’t hit. Strong mode is for strong foes where the same principle applies.
There’s a mini QTE game where if the pointer goes up inflames I’m supposed to left click for a combo.

Here’s what happens:
When I right click, 50% of the time nothing happens. When an enemy is stunned, right clicking does nothing. I’m left spasmodically clicking away at these enemies while they swing at me. No fun :(

Right click casts the current spell-- you’re running out of mana^H^H^H^H endurance, which is why it usually does nothing.

Left-click and only left-click attacks.

You’re not supposed to click rapidly, the ‘QTE’ bit is the main fighting mechanism. Successfully hit it then and you’ll chain your attacks together, which is essential, or otherwise you’re only getting your first, weakest attack in (and probably resetting the timing of the swing by clicking a lot).

Was there a way to actively parry? I can’t even remember.

so what should I be looking at? Does the sword pointer change when I have a chance to hit?

:)

On the lower skill levels, I think the cursor acquires flames at the moment you need to click. Parrying is not active, no. The choice of style is more or less as you describe, but not quite that black and white. Right click will be spells.

How did you manage to completely miss this…?

there was no tutorial :(

Apart from the giant tutorial?

The entire section in the Witcher citadel is a tutorial. Arguably the village you go to after that as well.

well it wasn’t that clear!

Anyway, just tried the demo and after figuring it out I was able to get into the swing of things. The fighting is like Streets of Rage in slo-mo. I would have preferred a fighting system with more control, but overall the game has some great atmosphere.

The meat of the gameplay is more in equipping and leveling than actually fighting. That and navigating the dialogs and huge and cool branching quest system. The combat itself isn’t much more complicated than Diablo, which is fine by me.

I really liked how the game started. It wasn’t like “you’re in a sewer, learn how to play and try to escape through a drainage pipe or toilet seat” seen in so many other titles.

I heard the voice acting was redone for the collector’s edition, is it worth it?

After asking a Dwarven blacksmith if he knows how to make a simple item: Are you trying to offend me, or can’t you control what you say?

We could have an entire thread dedicated to awesome Witcher dialogue.

I have been spending a ton of time in this game the last few days. It is great. Well, except for all the running around from one end of the map to the other in the first town, but since then it’s been great.

The collector’s edition is way better than the original release, in interface and voice acting/writing. I don’t recall specifics, but I couldn’t stand the original release, but the collector’s edition, which is a free upgrade if you already have the original, hooked me right away.

Any word on the legal issues around the console versions getting resolved? I didn’t get all that far on the PC version, but from what I saw, the combat seemed like it would be much more suited to a console controller.

For me it was the atmosphere. And the sex. I suppose I’m just a perv at heart, but I really loved chasing down the ladies and figuring out how to get their nudie card.

That’s what kept me from getting farther in the game. The controls felt really detached and strange with a mouse, and a controller replacing m&k probably would have helped me. Something about third person perspective requires two thumbsticks now, probably just force of habit. Mass Effect barely squeaked by for me on the strength of it being more of a shooter and the accuracy being worth it.

It’s a Games for Windows game. Doesn’t it work on the PC with a 360 controller? I thought that was part of the GfW requirements.

I couldn’t get it to, and I’m far too lazy to do the custom configuration options. Same was true for Mass Effect, which I was rather surprised by. I think the GUI is not adaptable enough to fully accommodate it on the fly, although to be honest I’m looking forward to the day when I can use my k/m and 360 controller interchangeably but on the fly.
