How intimately should one be acquainted with the Witcher 1s story? I vaguely remember some scenes but not most of it. Is that enough to properly enjoy the Witcher 2? There’s still ~10 days to go…

Man, trying to complete this before the Witcher 2 comes out is becoming a slog. I’m not sure if it’s the pacing, or the lack of story involvement in the latter chapters, but I’m stuck in Act IV with very little motivation to continue.
Playing on hard, the fights have already become too easy and I’m up to my ears in whatever potions I need for whatever occasion I might need them for. Story-wise, I killed Dagon and should be helping out by clearing some side quests but I lost interest in the dead bride story and Alvin has never really endeared himself to me enough to follow his story.
Act IV, however pretty it is, seems like such a departure from the main story, and game that it really takes me out of wanting to complete the rest of the game. Is there anything else to look forward to in the upcoming chapter that makes me slogging through some the side quests and the main quest for?
I barely followed the story even while I was playing it. I’m sure they’ll have fan service and book/game references, but I’m not sweating it.
I didn’t realize we were down to 10 days though. I need to order my new PC parts.
Haven’t you been going to order those parts for about 9 years now?
The end of act IV is when you see the consequences of your previous decisions and get to make some interesting choices.
I loved act IV myself, the setting is just wonderful, and the story gets gripping.
Plus, if I remember correctly act V is quite short (and not that good but then you’ll be at the end).
So keep it up.
Nope, May! I just finished classes and wanted to do a few projects around the house before I dive into computer games all summer. :)
Yeah act 5 and epilogue are pretty short. Personally I loved Act 4, it was a complete 180 change compared to previous city acts.It was based a lot on polish romantism literature which nobody except poles is familiar with though :).
Hiya folks,
I picked up Witcher: EE from GOG today. I have avoided reading anything about the game (including this or any other thread) so that I might have an unspoiled experience. My apologies for being that guy. MY QUESTION: are there any indispensable mods/fan patches/tweaks?
I didn’t use any when i replayed it.

There’s a big fan patch. I’d say you’re better off avoiding it as it makes extensive tweaks to the combat to make it much, much, much harder.
I’m intrigued by this - might make for an interesting replay experience - where would I find this?
Full combat rebalance, on moddb.
Personally, to someone playing for a first time, I would recommend getting FCR, but customizing the installation to include ONLY bugfixes and tweaks. So that experience will be vanilla, only improved (possibility to hide HUD, possibility to walk, wounds being visible on characters etc).

Download link is in that Wiki.
Potions are such a big part of the game that I suggest playing the game on Hard (save often) so that you can get the full experience of crafting them.

I’m really enjoying this so far, the trekking around the first village space was fun if only to take in the life going on around me and the way the villagers go about their life, hide from rain, stop to shoot the breeze. I even enjoyed finding that several otherwise ordinary looking villagers will have special conversation trees.
Run into a couple of oddities so far where the journal is being updated with things that didn’t happen. For example, I killed X and the journal was updated to say I did so in Y’s house and that Y was already gone by the time I got there, but in fact the fight took place in the street and Y was fighting alongside me. There was another odd entry for a spirit I met which apparently had me fight Z, yet I had a conversation and there was no fight.
I do feel like I could do with a little more laying out of what’s happening in some of the dialogue. When the area was being summed up I desperately wanted some more extensive notes to refer to as my character was making assuming inferences I hadn’t made or referring to one of the many conversations which hit you at the end with a lot of info.

The game does have some of that stuff. I think the way that certain plot and quest encounters were storyboarded doesn’t mesh with the way it was actually designed in-game for whatever reason, so you have these sorts of discrepancies where the journal describes something that either didn’t happen, or you didn’t notice was happening at the time.

I’m just surprised those were never nailed in a patch.
So I find myself in chapter five, still wearing the default armor. Hopefully I will correct that soon. :)
Yes, if you buy Witcher 2.
Finally completed The Witcher! Geralt is such a damn badass. The ending commentary didn’t exactly make me feel good about my choices. But I suspect it was going to be like that no matter what I did.
