I was thinking of the root word, gawk (stare at) and wondering how it can be so different from gawky. Turns out there’s a noun for gawk (an awkward or shy person. “let those country gawks dance to their hearts’ content”), the usage of which i have never heard, like ever.
I used that, I did get it done by the final guess. Tough one.
I think there’s also the idea that the person that is the adjective is doing the verb.
