World Cup 2018 - No Match Discussions

Looks like the Kroos goal from the other day.

Ikea instructions for scoring from a free kick in the last minute. It’s from David Squire’s latest comic:

I bet there’s a lot more than three off-camera.

But wait! They missed a word there…FIFA Men’s World Cup.

New standings are out. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1upheBSjU4W-yQajry_p6LBWX_2MGMupDDnx8oi7mbVU/edit#gid=917689857 This is includes Tuesday’s games.

So, just a general soccer question - why is it that GKs seem to avoid playing the ball w/ their hands unless they have to? They can grab it anywhere inside the box, right?

No, they can’t pick it up if a player on their own team passes it to them with their feet (can use their hands after a header). They changed it in the 90’s because teams were just having the goalie constantly carry the ball around.

Yeah, in the 1990 World Cup a great delaying tactic was just to pass the ball to your keeper, and he would pick it up, play around with it for a while, tell his players to go farther away, then finally kick it to them.

This was a great rule change for the 1994 World Cup, where if you pass back to your own keeper, he can’t pick it up with his hands unless you pass it using your chest or your head.

Got it. Thanks for the info!

It’s only a deliberate pass back they can’t pick up, incidentally. The keeper can still catch the ball if it deflects off a defender’s foot or if the defender is trying to clear and skews it towards goal or whatever.

Agreed it’s a great rule change.

The effect of breaking the rule is an indirect free kick, not a penalty.

Oops wrong thread

The same time they put the pass back to the keeper rule in, they also added a rule that goalies couldn’t not hold the ball and take more than four steps.

That rule is pretty much unenforced, as long as a keeper isn’t deliberately wasting time.

@scottagibson: I wouldn’t put that here.

Why not?

The “No Match Discussions” bit. Some folks might want to watch the match on tape-delay. After 24 hours it’s pretty much fair game, though.

Spoiler alert: There’s one from Mexico today

Ah, got it. Thx.

Well that confirms our 16 teams through to the next round. Here are the prediction standings by teams qualified. Obviously there’s spoiler information if you know which teams people picked, so don’t click the dropdowns if you want to avoid that.

Looks like Pool 3 is a fight for second place after a clear winner looks likely.

I can still pull through surely, if Mexico and Denmark meet in the finals.
