you have to dismount it if you dont want to re-buy it. you dont have to re-research it.

Ugh. AFAICT it won’t let me go back to the default gun, which is the only one I have available. Oh well, buying another on my Su-76 is cheaper than buying the same one again for the 85. So I guess that’s a little cheaper.

Yep, and US tank destroyers were very effective vs other tanks. Open top light turret = better visibility, and faster turret rotation speed. Plus they were fast. The clue is in the name, optimised to kill other tanks.

The realistic way to balance them would be to make them much more vulnerable to HE splash damage I guess than other tanks. But an M18 Hellcat, or M36 should be a terror.

Once you get the 107 for the SU-85 you’ll forget it had other guns :)

I’ve pretty much unlocked tier 3 now and face the agonizing decision of which tier 5 precursor to unlock - Pz III (on way to Pz IV), A-20 (on way to T34, M3 on way to M4 Sherman or (t-32??) on way to KV. I already have a hetzer (Tier 4), which is quite fun but I think the gun on t3 russian TD is better.

I’m leaning towards A -20, as the t-34 sounds fun. I was wondering which of the main T5 mediums (Pz IV, t-34 & m4 Sherman) has the sniperiest main gun? Eg long range accuracy and penetration. I suspect it will be Pz IV?

I really didn’t get the hate for the Pz III ausf a. I didn’t mind it at all, unlocked it really quickly and had a fair few 500+ xp matches. (including one doubled). I think it helped I had unlocked a lot of it’s stuff (particularly 5cm gun) doing the luchs -> leopard.

Surprisingly I still have played the most matches in the luchs, but it doesn’t feel like it.

Both the T-34 and the Pz IV both have guns with high-accuracy and good penetration. So you might want to look where each tank gets you in order to help you choose which direction to go in. The T-34 leads you to the Russian Mediums, whereas the Pzkw IV leads to German heavies, with the possibility to get to German mediums with a bit of work. (The more direct line to German mediums is to go through the Pzkw III/IV.)

Longer term AIUI the Panther tends to get played as a very tough and mobile sniper – I haven’t gotten there yet, but that’s how I’ve been playing the VK3002(DB) (which is one-tier below the Panther) and it seems to work pretty well. The T-44 (which I played extensively in beta) tends to be used more to close-in and mix-it up with other tanks, although it doesn’t have to be used that way.

The Pzr IV and VK3002(DB) don’t do as well in close in action as their turrets don’t turn that fast, which can be a problem in circling actions. The Pzr IV is fairly slow, but is much tougher than the T-34. Going up the line the VK3001(H) and VK3001§ both have good speed, but the VK3001(H) in particular is not very tough for its tier.

I felt that the Russian T-34-85 and T-43 felt a big sluggish and unresponsive compared to the T-34. But they’ll still handle better than the Pzr IV. The T-34-85 is not that robust, particularly if the enemy knows not to shoot you in the turret. IIRC the T-43 felt pretty tough, and the T-44 is definitely a tough little tank.

I’ve played the Sherman extensively. It is kind of in the middle of the other two. Tougher than the T-34, faster than the Pzkw IV. Generally a decent tank all around, but not that great as a sniper. The gun is simply not that accurate. The M4A3E8 has a bit better gun on the last unlock, but still not very accurate. I haven’t gotten past the M4A3E8, so I can’t comment on what you’ll see as you push up the tiers.

M-18 and M-36 (especially the Hellcat) were fast, though the M-10 Wolverine was kinda pokey. Of course, in US usage, given the nature of the war by the time we fielded large numbers of these things, they ended up being used more as infantry support lobbing HE at stuff than as dedicated tank destroyers. Which was ironic I guess, as the German StuGs were designed as infantry support first then became anti-tank machines as the Germans shifted to defensive ops and faced hordes of Allied armor.

Thanks, I know it is probably more work but I probably want to go to the german mediums via the Pz IV. its too much iconic tank porn to ignore!!

I just got my highest xp battle ever (978) as a scout, driving the leopard! :-)

Didnt kill anyone, but survived to the end and the four arty on my team certainly helped. Defintely getting the hang of where to push it to get first contact, then zoom out of there with a planned escape route (point yourself the rigth way!!) Looking forward to the new Tier V scout int he tech tree, VK2801

The game will always allow you to go back to any gun, there are no artificial limitations of any kind (the only gun limitations are the tank’s max weight and the turret’s type). In the garage screen, just click the gun icon (located below the tank), you will see the list of compatible guns and the one at the bottom is the default one. The one with a green checkmark is what you have currently equipped. The ones with a yellow checkmark are what you’ve bought previously but don’t have equipped at the moment. So if you want to downgrade, just click the gun with a yellow mark, this will put your current gun in a storage and equip the new one. The unequipped gun becomes available for other tanks to equip (it receives the yellow mark on those tanks’ screens).

BTW if a gun is cheaper on one tank than another, these are different guns - all guns/engines cost the same for all compatible tanks.

BTW 2. Over time you will have a bunch of modules and rounds accumulated in your storage that you are not using anymore, even for the tanks you have sold already. Explore your Depot screen (use the buttons at the top of the Garage screen), you can sell all that unneeded stuff for 50% of the buying price and it will add up to a lot…

It’s the route I went after beta. It also leads to both Tiger and Panther, and if you’re a historic tank buff, you just have to drive a Tiger. Just as a warning most people think the Tiger is terrible – although I actually didn’t have any problems with it and thought it was a very solid tank.

Excellent, and you managed to do it on your first match of the day! Looks like your scouting managed to take out the enemy artillery, even if you didn’t get in the killing blows.

Yeah, went Tiger in the beta as well, and I’m going there again. Going the 3001H route this time, so I’ll be poised to get the Panther as well when tree changes go through.

It’s worth mentioning that a large percentage people who played the Tiger and found it to be terrible insisted on playing it like an IS. And a similarly large percentage of people who played against Tigers and found them terrible were seeing people who were pretending to be in an IS. I also found its reputation for catching fire to be vastly exaggerated. The gun gets knocked out more often than I’d like though.

It’s a sniper, not a knife fighter. And a damned good one too. The worst thing about it, IMO, is that it needs a very heavy XP investment in upgrades before it gets to the point where it actually becomes good. Tracks, preferably at least two engine upgrades. The turret upgrade and the long 88. And to get those, you first need the short 88. All of it very expensive. Compare that xp cost to the T29, where you’re in acceptable shape with a just track upgrade and the 90mm.

I completely agree with you on the Tiger, I really liked mine in beta, when fully upgraded.

The problem though is that when your Tiger is the top tank in a match, you are “expected” to lead the charge.

Loved my Tiger, when upgraded, in beta. Iconic, and well-suited to its role. But yeah, as Stridergg says, if you’re at the top of the list in a Tiger people somehow forget its actual abilities and morph it into an IS.

After reading Dave Markell’s diaries, I tried this for the first time last night. I suffered through the T1 tank, but found the fights interesting since most of my opponents were in similarly terrible vehicles. I eventually bought the US T2 light tank, which was all sorts of fun until I tried to actually penetrate armor. (A machine gun? Really?) Then I bought the upgraded gun, and was placed against a bunch of much better tanks, but generally had a good time.

A few observations. Bad news comes first:

-I feel that the decision to include all these prototype / theoretical tanks was a bad choice. I’m not a tread head, but the use of real tanks is a positive thing that adds to the game. It’s annoying seeing all of these tanks that (for all practical purposes) are fictional. Extra tank variety could easily come through including real tanks from other nations.

-Given all the “fake” tanks rolling around, the HUD gives you very little information on what you’re seeing / shooting at. Again, I’m not a tread head, so it’s not like I recognize a lot of the names, but I’d be more enthusiastic about putting in the effort if learning the names would also be applicable to other WW2 based materials.

-The maps seem kind of small once you get a tank with an actual engine. I expect increasing gun ranges will exacerbate this problem.

-Holy crap is this grind going to be terrible.

-I really like the fact that the game tries to model penetration and armor facing. Getting behind someone is awesome.

-I like the ability to “hide.” It may not be modeled perfectly, but it’s an interesting concept.

-I like how scouting seems important.

list of name on side of your screen.

Red = SPG, light silver = Tank destroyer, dark silver = Tank

if you can see their tank, on top of their tank there is an icon.

Square icon = SPG, triangle = Tank destroyer, Diamond = light tank, 2 stripe diamond = medium tank, 3 strips = heavy tank.

I’m seriously flattered by this. Thank you.

To address a few of your points, I agree with you that smaller tech trees would be a good thing. I’ve never liked the enormous number of experimental tanks, many of which had one or two prototypes built before they were abandonned. If there were only 8 tiers of tanks, most of the fake ones could be eliminated and the leveling process could be slowed to take the same total length of time. That would also mean that players would have to drive the T 1-4 vehicles for a longer period, and they can be very fun.

And you’re right, the maps are small (1000 meters square at the moment). Larger maps have been promised, maps where each team will have 45 vehicles, but the ETA is unknown.

As for the grind, you ain’t seen nothing yet! I’m currently trying to earn the 168K experience I need to unlock the IS-4, and that doesn’t even count the pre-requisites!

What’s cool about WoT is that despite all the very real flaws–and I’m still pissed at the use of so damn many fake tanks–it manages to be really, really fun and addictive. For all of its flaws, there’s really nothing quite like it out there.

everyone always thinks of these things as a ‘grind’, but really you should just play and have fun, and eventually you unlock stuff. If you’re not having fun playing on the way there, find a different game.

This problem happens in every game now that levelling up and unlocking things is so popular. Hell, people used to play the same shooter (hell, even on the same map) for hundreds of hours with no ‘grind’.

you are of course right, harkonis, but for some vehicles it isnt true. m3 lee…

I’d like to see more criss-crossing of the tree so it’s easier to avoid a tank you don’t like and still get where you are going.

Of course using free xp, you can still avoid playing a tank you don’t like to get to one you do.
