You may be confusing gold with credits. Gold is what you pay real money for. Credits are what you accrue every time you complete a match, with the total amount higher when you score a victory.

Most tanks, including the ones in the top tiers, are bought with credits. But before you can buy them, you have to research them by cashing in research points. You get research points the same way you get credits – by playing matches. For top tier tanks, you need quite a lot of research points to open them up for purchase – it could takes you weeks or months to get access to them depending on how much you play.

Premium tanks are a category of tanks in which no research points are needed. You can buy them right from the start, but they cost gold (ie, real money). Note that premium tanks are OK, but generally not as good as their counterparts in the research tree.

The one problem with the Hetzer that can’t be solved with upgrades is the very limited gun traverse. I must admit it was a lot more fun this time round than what I recall from beta. I think this might have something to do with the game tiering. It’s a pretty solid TD as long as it’s only facing tanks roughly around its tier.

Are the Jagdpanther camo ratings getting upped? I didn’t notice this in the patch notes.

Still hard to tell, Russian release was less than a week ago and their forums are still in disarray.

Ignoring the usual whining and looking at (supposedly) legit testing, it seems that German TD’s camo has been improved. But all TD’s get “uncloaked” when they shoot now.

I need to run now, I can re-post some numbers later if you want them.

In the store screen, there is a checkbox that says something like “Only show researched tanks”. If you uncheck it, you can see all the tanks that’ll eventually be available when you research them using XP.

I feel really cheated. I played for several hours on T1 and T2, and thought hey this is pretty cool, I’ll upgrade to premium.

Now I’m just pissed at myself because T3 sucks so bad. I’m put at the bottom of the rung, with T5’s and even T6’s about 70% of the time. 20% I’m about 2/3 the way down and the other 10% is spread (I had one match where I was at the top - out of 20 or 30 battles). I was in a Marder today and had 4 critical shots against a T1 heavy. No kidding - FOUR critical’s and all of them together didn’t do a single % of damage.

Now I’m stuck with another 28 fucking days of premium.

One of the benefits of premium is that you can form platoons - a whopping 2 other friends and you can form a team of 3. And guess what happens then? Their stupid matchmaking system now weights your platoon so that you will always be at the bottom with T5’s and T6’s.

My two sons and me formed a platoon (they just started, one is at T1, the other at T2), so I jump into a T2 and the weighting had us in a T3-T5 with our T2’s. And all the players were laughing at how the T1 cunningham was in the battle.

FUCK THIS MATCHMAKING and fuck my inability to hold off on paying for premium. I would feel so much better if I hadn’t given them a dime, but I was lied to by how T1 and T2 were played.

I’m really at a loss with the T3’s. The matchmaking system can kiss my ass.

I agree that generally the T3’s aren’t that great. It gets better at T5 because your tank will feel more capable. But if you don’t like the idea of playing against higher tier opponents, you are still going to find that’s true in T5 and 6 as well, when you will be matched against tier 8s.

Also, if you have a T3 in your platoon, there is no way you will be put into a T1/T2 match. A T3-T4 match is the best you can hope for.

Marder with one of the top 2 guns for it should be able to put holes in a T1 heavy as long as you don’t right click autoaim and make sure you hit the tank body not turret.

Also, one thing you don’t realise in a T3 tank until you’ve spent some time in T5 and beyond is just how much the bigger tanks need the little guys to go run around enemy lines to spot targets for them to snipe. I’ll admit it’s not as fun as actually blowing stuff up but in a higher tier match its really the best use of most of the tier 3 tanks.

This seems to happen in cycles. T1 and T2 are a hell of a lot of fun because you rarely face T3+. Then T3 is painful. T6 was another really bad tier for me. I spent about 100 matches feeling severely undersized and outgunned. It finally got better when I got all of the upgrades for my tank (a KV1S).

The matchmaking system could use a bit of work imo. I’ve been in matches where I couldn’t do significant damage to 75% of the tanks in the match. That sucks.

No, it doesn’t. Being in a platoon does not affect your balancing weight. The tier of the match is determined based on the highest tier in the platoon and balancer is trying to compemsate for the lowest tier teammate by by picking some lower tier players for the opposing team.

But you are certainly not making your team any favors if you are taking a T1 friend to platoon with your T3 (or T7 like some idiots do, I think I’ve seen the “my loltraktor is going to kill all your Tigers” joke like a hundred times).

T3 is a weird tier, there are simply not enough tiers below it to level the things out. T3 doesn’t play that often with T2’s only (T2’s are busy entertaining T1’s), so it mostly gets thrown into matches with T4’s and T5’s (I think). Statistically it means that T3’s are mostly at the bottom of the list.

As you level up, the situation improves a lot - you will have enough tiers below and above you and your placement in matches will be more leveled out statistically.

T2 should also be ok. My friends and I do play in our platooned T2 tanks from time to time and we get into T1/T2 fights about 50% of the time.

Did they change that? Because at one point they explicitly said that being in a platoon raises your balancing weight.

They removed it a long time ago, in patch 0.6.1.5. They removed the impact of modules on balancing weight at the same time.

I must have missed that - thanks

From their dev discussion on matchmaking here

“Weight” is the number that describes average battle performance of particular vehicle.
At the moment “weight” is calculated on the basis of vehicle’s tier, type (HT, LT, MT, TD, SPG), and equipment installed .
Platoon “weight” exceeds the total “weight” of the same individual tanks that are not in platoon (platoon of 3 Tigers has more “weight” than 3 individaul Tigers that are not platooned).

Also - I said upthread that I dropped down to a T2 to play with my kids and the “weight” of our platoon of a T1, T2 + T2 plus whatever they added for platoon weight kicked us into a T3-T5 battle.

From one of the developers posted yesterday

So platoon weight still is a factor…

Apparently 6.4 was launched for the US servers. The download is a little under 1gb.

The patch is out today, and looks like the servers are down.

If you or your sons go with the U.S. tech tree, I think you will be happy with the M2 Light and M2 Medium.

After upgrading my M2 Medium with the howitzer, I’ve been really enjoying my games. I find myself matched up in the T2-3 bracket about a third of the time and the T3-4 bracket a third of the time, so I only occasionally encounter things like KVs. And the howitzer is still decently effective against heavy tanks, provided I’m not going against them alone.

If anything, the M2 feels a little overpowered in games in the T2-3 bracket. The howitzer can one-shot almost anything in those tiers if I can get positioned for a side shot. I’ve had a lot of success equipping my camo net, hiding in a large hedge, and staying very still…

Well the servers are up now, and I played a match on the new Pagorki. There is a lot more cover all over the place, rocks and tress, especially on the middle hill area. It looks nice too. Can’t comment much on the new cover system yet, though I was able to see a Hetzer in a bush from a decent ways away.

At the bottom of that post you linked to it says “not relevant in current version”. A few weeks after that post, there was patch 0.6.1.5 that introduced this change:

  • Balance-weight of tanks does not increase when in a platoon.
  • Removed influence of modules on the balance-weight of a tank.

You can find the patch notes here: http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/11610-beta-0615-update/

As for your second post, I am sure, the balancer will be tweaked in future patches, probably even including some changes in the the today’s 6.4 and who knows what kind of changes will be introduced later on. Your conclusion (“So platoon weight still is a factor”) is inconsistent with the quote you’ve used.

However, as of, well, yesterday, after playing probably around 1500 matches in 6.3 version, a lot of them platooned, I haven’t noticed platoon affecting my placement. Routinely we have our 3 IS’s (for example) at the top of the list balanced by the same tier tanks on the opposite team. And just as often we are in the middle of the list.

It’s mostly luck. I’ve been playing alone over the weekend and I had about 5 games with my Jagdpanther placed in the second half of the list. Then I took a break, came back an hour later and had 3 out of 4 games were I was at the top of the list. There were no changes to my tank before and after the break and yet my placement was drastically different.

7500gp for the new Lowe and KV-5. That’s insane.
