Well, I was thinking I could buy a T-34 and then fight in my KV. But if you can’t buy an unresearched tank then it would just be fighting in my KV.
Love this promotion. Tiger and StugIII purchased and I’m back to being broke. Stock Tiger is as bad as everyone says, an under armored slug with a selection of woefully inadequate guns until you unlock the long 88. Stug is surprisingly fun. The Hetz had really soured me on German TDs.

I can definitely think of situations in which the long reload time with hard-hitting shot could be a benefit. If you only expose yourself every 12 seconds or so, that’s going to reduce your opponents’ DPS too, which could end up being a big win.
I don’t like the idea of making the T-44 slower though. For me the joy of playing Russian high-end mediums is zooming about the battlefield. In some sense if you’re going to play a slow tank with a big gun, better to do it via the IS line and get better armour and more hit points. Of course that’s all a matter of taste.
I played the T-44/122 in the beta for like 250 games or so (after around the same number with the T-44/100). I was obsessed with the tank.
Then at some point in release I got kinda spoiled by German/US guns with their fast aim time and accuracy. As much as I loved the high alpha of my T-44/122 (which I also got in release), that 3 second aiming time was killing me. Not literally in the battle, but every second of aim time spent just staring at the target made me die a little inside.
So I switched to the T-44/100 again and actually started to enjoy it again. Cheaper rounds (250 vs 1000 credits), shorter aim time, lower weight and more DPS on the few occasions a high DPS is important.
But then I finally unlocked the T-54 after 185 battles and sold the T-44. Because: Pershing.
The Pershing is the better T-44, and I enjoy playing it far more. So there was no reason to keep the Russian tank. And it is so refreshing to have three equipment slots again (the T-44 only has two, really, since one is permanently occupied by Wet Ammo Rack unless one enjoys blowing up suddenly and spectacularly, from full health, every other battle). I can finally have my standard Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer and Binoculars set up.
Because of the July 13th promotion, I used my Free Experience to finish researching the KV. I wish I had saved it.
Not to me. I think it’s a dog. It’s slow, the reload time on its gun is so long I usually die because the other tank can get off its next shot before I do. Fully upgraded it might be awesome, but it is horrible right now.
It’s a real adjustment and I hated how slow it was even fully upgraded. That said, going slow forces you to be smart. You have to think about where your going and your mindful when you need to retreat. The KV teaches good habits.
I found out about this game here and I love it. one noob question: what does the exclamation mark that appears sometimes in your damage screen mean? and how do I mark certain sectors of the map? thx!
I think it’s for TD sniper mode, and shows you cant move tracks whilst zoomed.
ctrl and left click the map to highlight map square for the team. In arty view, ctrl-right click moves your view to that square.
The exclamation point means that someone near you is asking for help. If you mean how do you ping the mini map, press the control key and left click on it.
thx! that’s what I wanted to know.
loving the game. I just bought the 100mm gun for the hetzer. if played carefully, the gun is quite good against all but the most heavily armored targets (I only use HE for this one). the reload time sucks, but if you snipe away at enemies it’s ok.

No point to the 122 on the T-44 imo.
You gain about 50% more damage and halve your RoF. On top of that you lose accuracy and increase aim time. Same Penetration on both guns. Plus the 122’s shell will cost more. As an added bonus you’re slower.
Its a lose/lose across the board. I never encountered a situation where that small amount of damage would’ve saved the day. If anything the bigger issue was a lack of dps when I needed it, which would actually drop with the 122.
If it fired as fast as the 122 on the KV-3, then I could see it being a choice, but theres really no upside to it unless you REALLY want to one shot low tier crap and even then it will probably take you two rounds. Which is about what it takes with the 100mm anyway, only it does it faster.
If the 122mm aimed as fast as the 100mm or faster, I would have probably kept on using it. After 0.6.4 for a medium tank like the T-44, the ability to fire off one high damage shot and duck behind cover is invaluable. You have to wait anyway to “drop” from the enemy radar, before coming out of solid cover to fire again, so you end up wasting a large part of that faster rate of fire on the 100mm.
On the other hand, with the 122mm you give up the ability to do traditional brawls, as you’re going to get murdered by another tier 8 medium with a 100mm, 90mm or 88mm gun. But one can’t have everything.
The only real reason I personally stopped using the 122mm on the T-44 was really the aim time, which became unbearable.
Then the Pershing came, and as I said earlier, made even the T-44/100 pointless.

Like most tanks, the KV is awful stock. Once you get the KV-2 turret and the Zis6, it becomes deadly. (Still slow, but at least you get a pretty accurate gun that can damage vehicles well above its tier, and one shot vehicles at its tier, like those Stugs)

All tanks are awful stock. Some are just more awful than others.
Complaints about a tank based upon personal anecdotes don’t really become relevant until a tank is fully unlocked. (And arguably not even then.)
This is especially true when discussing tanks like the KV, which are so powerful when fully upgraded that the developers are planning to turn the upgraded KV into a Tier 6 KV-2. Calling the KV a “dog” is as close as you can get to forming an empirically wrong opinion about internet tanks.

Heh, it could also be said that some tanks are awful even after upgrades =)
Arty is often pretty decent stock, at least some of them. I remember having fun with the stock SU-26.
The SU-152 is pretty good stock, as long as you mostly load HE.

KV with the 107 is like hot lava. It may be slow but death is certain.
The ISU-152 is slow. I mean, glacially slow. I guess once you get the BL10 it’s a fair tradeoff (and once I, um, get the new tracks, that might help), but out of the gate wow, it’s slow. I’m not complaining, as it’s a good TD. You just have to plan where you want to be, commit to that, and don’t plan on changing direction. Ever.
