I’ve checked other tanks. And it’s the same. May be a feature and not a bug, as the cool kids say.

I don’t have that issue with any of my tanks. Maybe theres some setting you turned on or something?
I can always go back to old turrets and they show on the list even if I can’t - says something like “incorrect gun for this turret” but its still on the list.

Just checked ingame settings and there’s nothing that I see that would change it. And I have no mods, nor have I messed with any .ini files or .exes. Also checked official forum. Nothing shows in a search. I’ll send in a bug report and hope for the best.
Edit: Sent a ticket. Will post reply here.
If you have a gun equipped that you need that turret to use, you have to change the gun first I think, then swap the turret.

Can you post a screenshot of the screen when you click the turret button for the kv?

In mine it shows that another gun is required to use the original KV turret.
It has access to the pretty decent 122mm U-11. An HE gun that makes a stock turret KV pretty competitive (until one unlocks the 107mm).
Had a very fun (for me!) match in the KV last night where I was the heaviest tank on the field and everything was between tier 2 and 5. I felt like an unstoppable ogre. 6 kills, all one shot. The insane speed at which the battle developed was a bit of a shock also as I have been so used to trundling about in massive tier 7-10 battles.
I am playing the KV to grind out the S-51 but tbh I always enjoy coming back to it. I can think of another tier 5 tank that still feels effective shooting at tier 7 and 8.
Well, I finally reached tier 9 again, and I’m ready to quit.
The previous 8 tiers, I was having fun again and hadn’t quite realized why. I thought it was the maps, or the netcode, or the autobalancer, or something.
Nope, it was the lack of artillery.
Now in tier 9 I’m surrounded by it. GW Panthers and Objekts and M43s and it all means I’m not having fun any more.
Thanks, World of Tanks, you were fun. But clearly you don’t want my money, since the developers and I do not see eye to eye on this issue.
Pretty much, you have to use the 122 with the stock turret, at the 76 is essentially a pop-gun, IMO. But the 122 isn’t terrible, a sort of mini-derp.
Though I do have mixed feelings overall about the game’s fondness for large-caliber HE. Derps make a lot of crappy tanks or tanks with crappy low-end modules at least viable, but it always feels kind of cheap having scads of people roaring around in tanks with low-velocity HE chuckers, ramming into you and firing point blank. I have the old wargamer’s image of “real” tank battles in my head and sometimes it gets in the way of actually playing WoT the best way I suppose!
Then again, I just put the 10.5 on my little Hetzer (I’m slowly fiddling with the German TD line while grinding my ISU to Object status and working on my Panther II and Pershing).
Well, all the tier 6 and 7 tanks that you get matched against in your tier 9 that have no hope of doing meaningful damage to you are happy to have friendly arty to soften you up. Though honestly I see the same amounts of arty at lower tiers.
I played tier 6 and 7 too, you know. Mostly I leave the big boys to themselves.
And no, I don’t see anywhere near the same amount of arty when I play my 3601 and M36. I have many matches without any arty whatsoever.

PapaSmurf, it is possible to keep playing tier 8 or lower, even if you have a tier 9 in the garage.
I do miss the “leveling” incentive, but it’s still fun playing lower tier tanks.
No doubt, I’ll continue to play my 3601, but I’m not spending a dime on gold in this game any more.
I most frequently play tier 6-7 and it’s not unusual for me to see 4 or 5 arty per team, often 3+ of which are of what I consider super arty. It may be more a matter of the current meta game than a change that happened at tier 9.
It’s less the arty that caused me to quit, it was more the piles and piles of endless morons and twits that it makes me play with. And yeah, I’ve had my fill of being smoked by Type E’s in my IS-4.
I was almost sure that for a while playing 8-9, that those people actually ground out those tanks and had an iota of how a map worked, but…they don’t. Not to worry, I have plenty of better things to be doing.
I rarely see anything like that. The frequency of artillery in 6-7 vs 9-10 is drastically different, IMO.
I’ve found that the number of battles with large numbers of arty is creeping up again in all tiers. It’s not as bad as it was in beta (yet), but fights with 5 or 6 arty per side are happening frequently enough to notice now. I hate them, since finding hard cover becomes by far the most important thing anyone can do and such fights are both unrealistic and dull.
I’m not really sure why the numbers are increasing. Perhaps it’s because more folks are realizing that arty is a very consistent money-maker if you’re careful with your shots. I have an Object 212 that’s easily my most profitable tank–if we win, I’m almost guaranteed to survive with no damage, which means no repair bill. That’s something no other class of vehicle can say.
And yes, I play arty sometimes, even though I’ve complained about its overall effects on the game many times. One reason I play it is the aforemention profitability, another is to learn what arty can and cannot do, and a third is variety. I’d still be quite happy if the whole SPG class was deleted, but since that will never happen, I’ll take advantage of it.

It’s a looong grind, but welcome to the KV to S-51 club. It’s a blast to be the lumbering behemoth on the field, and nice to actually be able to damage the higher tier tanks, even if you tend to die if they look at you funny. It’s spoiled me as far as the German medium line.
As for Dave’s comments on artillery: I wish that there was more to it when playing arty, it feels oddly disconnected when firing from that all-seeing 2d overhead view. But i’m not sure how they could’ve made it any better. And actually playing arty on some maps is extremely boring, to the point where I pull up a web browser until someone spots an enemy.
So were you shelling out $12.50 a month for a Premium account? Which I gather is the price if you’re buying at the 3000 gold level.
I still think arty adds a lot to the game, especially as the game is currently operating. Without arty, the matchmaking would be fatal. There is simply no way to kill high tier heavies in some matches without arty, and in many cases the game matches up tanks of the same or similar tiers but without any consideration of their respective abilities to actually kill or even damage each other. Arty is the great equalizer.
Now, I would not mind tweaking the matchmaker to limit the number of arty per game, but then, I’d love to see all classes of vehicles be on a quota system. Say, each side would have a range of how many heavies, mediums, lights, and arties could be included. Ideally, I’d love to see each side have mostly mediums, a few lights, no more than two or three arties, and a handful of heavies to spearhead things. TDs would have be categorized by power I guess. But of course, that would never work as heavies are so powerful now that most people gravitate towards them ultimately.
