I should clarify my last post. I do understand the concept of situational awareness. The problem is, that some tanks don’t have a really good view range. And so, as a TD, or as a large sniping tank, i count upon my team mates to give me a bunch of red dots on the map. Often this is not so.
Usually what I get is the view of whatever group decided to rush and die. That is often a bunch of the enemy tanks in a pass that pounded them. I can then, of course, figure out the general sweep that the reds will take. But OTOH I’m trying to pop that Leopard that broke through on the other side.
I guess that I fail at situational awareness in WoT.

Public matches are just like that sometimes. Sometimes you lose in the first 30 seconds of the match and theres nothing you can do about it.
Ignoring flanks or avenues of approach is probably the thing most likely to make me start insulting my teammates. At least if they try and suck they tried. If they all lemming off someplace stupid or sit behind the arty, I’m much less forgiving.
TDs are tough precisely because that’s what happens. Often, you have a good gun, decent frontal armor (if you have any armor worth the name), crap maneuverability (particularly on the heavy TDs) and paper side and rear armor. And some TDs are slow as well. So you really need to position yourself along the enemy’s line of advance, far enough back so you can get out of the way of an unopposed flying wedge but close enough to take advantage of your teammates’ spotting.
Of course, this depends on having actual flanks. Too often in a TD you’re left stuck out by your lonesome as THE flank. Which is not good. If you are supported by mediums, though, it’s cool, because as the enemy is dealing with you, the mediums prevent them from flanking and in turn flank them while you keep your front to the foe. But good luck getting mediums to support you usually.
That happened to me the other day in my Object 212 on Prohorovka. I was parked in some bushes at the very rear of the map, and a Lowe that was the strongest tank on our team parked BEHIND me for the entire battle. His comment, when everyone yelled at him, was that it was my job to protect him and his job was to hide, survive, and earn credits. He hit nothing, killed nothing, and we all died.
I was in a couple of battles awhile back in which the heavy tanks were hanging back in the rear. When I commented about it, I was told: “Heavies don’t move.” I told them they should make forts out of them and save on treads.
More recently I have seen tank destroyers and heavy tanks hiding behind the arty. I don’t know what that was about. Some newbies, I suppose.
I feel that if tank destroyers are going to hang back, they should be far enough away from our base to spot for the arty while they are waiting for enemy vehicles to approach.
But I have been in far too many battles recently in which the flanks or an obvious assault route has been left unguarded. Are some players without a clue as to what needs to be done? It kind of reminds me of a bunch of very young children who just don’t know any better.
Should there be an experience/credit bonus for winning the battle?
Heavies should lead the charge, I think. They have the armor and health to do so, and most carry good guns as well. Mediums should flank and support, while TDs lay down a longer range base of fire (or accompany the heavies if so inclined and equipped). Fast TDs can actually work with the mediums too.
Guarding arty is a worthy duty, but it’s a trick to find the right defenders. Slow mediums, or mediums with light but rapid-firing guns, make good choices, as do crappy and slow low-tier heavies. TDs are ok but usually lack the agility, though StuGs are good at this.

Generally, i find med/lights work well for guarding - the main threat is usually fast and light tanks, so they usually have enough to get the job done. Unless there’s T-54s on the other side…
Remember how we were discussing the increasing numbers of artillery, particularly in the higher tiers? I was just part of a 14 arty battle:
We won handily–I killed 2 E75’s and the T20 and did massive damage to the Maus and a couple other tanks–but it was intensely absurd. The moment anything was spotted, it died.
I had a 14 arty battle last night as well. It was ridiculous. We spent most of the map hugging walls.
Yeah, I think I’ve been in at least one 12 to 14 arty battle and, yeah, it’s kinda funny to see all the impacts when someone is spotted. Unless you’re the target.

Absent any news regarding enemy bullet traces, the new tier 5 light tanks should do much to alleviate the arty situation. The T-50-2 is so fucking zippy, it will be very hard to keep two of those from running through the usual arty hidey-holes. Chaffee wont need to radio them in, because he will blow them up himself. it looks silly, but its one helluva li’l tank, that :)

Pretty much, though it depends on the map generally you need heavies to push even if meds take an area.

TDs are usually in the area as are under-tiered heavies/meds and usually do alright. More often than not the best policy is a good area defense or advance so they can’t slip past in the first place, though E-50s and T-54s who really want to get there can be hard to stop.

what i really hate is when a bunch of people sit guarding a swathe of land i just thoroughly sanitized by driving through it and not encountering jack shit. instead of making an entirely safe push they just sit… and sit… and sit. and then we loose. tanks are offensive weapon systems folks!

Anyone here in beta for 6.7? From what I’ve been reading the new light tanks are amazing.
Pretty much. T-54s are teh debil, though. Those things are like Armageddon on treads for arty.

Just repurchased the PzII. Elited it. And I’m having more fun running around with a 37 mm machine gun than I have in a while. If anyone is getting tired of the grind, I’d highly recommend it.
I love low tier matches. Great fun, fluid, even Campinovka is fun.
My M40/M43 is fast becoming my new money and experience maker. It offers the best profit/time ratio of all my current tanks. Most matches I can earn 1500-2000 experience and 40,000 profit. Many other players have realized the same thing hence the 14 arty battles that are becoming more common.
