If you have an M4 or M4A3E8 Sherman you gain extra credits during the Creighton Abrams Birthday Special. I was in a battle in my M4 Sherman earlier this morning:
Victory!
Battle: Sand River Sunday, September 18, 2011 8:16:55 AM
Vehicle: M4 Sherman
Experience received: 861
Credits received: 51,414
I also have a Premium Account, and I don’t know whether the bonuses are cumulative or not.

Bad news is Lowes are like $50 now.
Definately cumulative. Its only like a +50% credits or something and I’m averaging 40-50k a match or so with the Easy8.
Half price Shermans also means you can buy one for the duration of the special and then sell it afterwards for the same price when it ends (less any upgrades you got).
Yeah, it’s thirty clams for the Chinese tank. I should have bought a Lowe when they were priced, um, Lowe-r. And the issue I’m having with arty is that, well, on some maps, like Ensk, or whatever it is, most of the time no one protects the arty so it’s a death sentence from the get go–one fast medium and all the arty dies. Whee!
Meh, I just pootle around in my non premium, T4/5 way. I do have the Ram, but from the beta, high level tanks are no more fun than low/ medium tier. Have unlocked the M10, but will be some time before can afford it. Current stable

Am i the only one who is completely unable to tell what country, type, and tier a tank is by the name? I can recognize the ones I currently own and some of the German ones ( why can’t every tank have a name like Hummel?) and that’s about it.
Hold ALT down more often in game and you’ll start matching up tank types with what’s beating on you / failing to get hurt by you
Tier you learn by experience, though I admit I still sometimes get the middle tiers mixed up. Country and type you learn by being a tank geek!
The new light tanks have changed the game. Unless artillery has a dedicated guard, they’re toast in 2 minutes.

It’s pretty fun to play a fast tank as an anti-scout in the first few minutes. Take a M5 Stuart or a PzIII/IV up to the front lines, wait for the scout rush, then chase them back to your backfield, trying to kill them before they get there.
I’m glad I don’t play arty.

Because of this thread I downloaded WoT yesterday and played it for a few hours and had a blast. For free-to-play it was very enjoyable and it doesn’t feel like spending money on gold is a necessity to be competitive in the game.
With that said, are there any good tips or links to some good must-know tips for beginners to this game? Also, is there a qt3 group or channel set up?
There’s usually a channel u, Qt3 it’s called. Look for TANSTAAFL (me) or one of the other more or less regulars like PumaAC.
The WoT forums have some sticky threads in the, um, I think it’s like game tips or gameplay tips forums, with some very good general advice and diagrams and stuff.
Spending gold is not necessary unless you’re in Clan stuff, but “necessary” buts up against “annoying” in the sense that ultimately advancement is slooooow without spending money, and that may or may not be an issue for you.

I got my KV-3 unlocked - now I just need to come up with another 800,000 credits…
The double and quintuple xp events just make it that much more painful to upgrade your top tank. They’re great for grinding through hatable low-tier stuff I can afford like the M3 Lee and A-20 (I’m not sure which one I hate more - at least with the A-20 I can run into the middle of the enemy and die quickly), though.
I know what you mean. I had so many vehicles I had researched (I hated the grind, too) but could not afford to purchase. But a recent experience was so unique for me that I couldn’t help but share it here.
Recently I purchased the retail boxed version of World of Tanks from Newegg. Among other things the game included a week’s worth of Premium Account and 1,050,000 credits (which boosted the number of credits I had to 1,337,801). Then I noticed the Creighton Abrams Birthday Special which boosted the credit income for the M4 and M4A3E8 Sherman tanks by 50%. So I spent this past weekend running mostly those two tanks.
I was very pleasantly surprised last night when I checked the number of credits I had accumulated and saw the figure 5,448,531–a gain of 4,110,730 credits! Now I can afford some of the upgrades I had been postponing.

I had no idea there was a boxed version. What does it come with?
According to this official announcement it includes:
[ul]
[li]1 T2 Light Tank[/li][li]1 week Premium account[/li][li]1,050,000 Credits[/li][li]1,800 Gold[/li][/ul]
as well as the game DVD and a Quick Start Guide.
I had planned on giving it to my brother but he didn’t want it. So I ended up using it myself.

I’m thinking of getting the box as well. I’ve already spent more on the game than I would on any subscription MMO.
Finally unlocked and purchased my E-100 after five weeks of work. First impressions are very favourable. Speed is ok and the first gun is excellent. It can take a beating as long as I present my front and the turret is mostly impervious to hits. Will be unlocking the 150mm cannon soon and can’t wait to unleash that beast. :)

So I pulled the trigger and ordered the box from Amazon. It’s a great deal.
I just uninstalled.
I think it’s permanent, there was no single reason I quit (ie, rawr I hate the arty… though I do.) Certainly the realization of how expensive everything is didn’t help, but once I hit the top tiers (IS-7, E-50), there just seemed no point to it. I had more fun with the mid-tiers, and played there for the past few weeks before just getting bored. Blew the last of my gold on premium ammo, which resulted in some hilarious results with the VK3601H. Somewhere along the way I didn’t notice that the 88 went from a bounce-every-second-shot gun to the top choice in its tier. It’s more badass than the 100mm on the T-43/T-44. The 107mm and 122mm obviously do more damage, but their reload and accuracy issues (and ammo cost for the 122!) are prohibitive.
Really fun game while it lasted, but now I really regret the money spent. Never felt that way before with a MMO/freemium.
Depends how much you spent. Some of my clan mates have spent over $1,000 so far since release. I guess if you had fun the whole time then like any other form of entertainment there would be a fun/dollar ratio.
The “end game” seems to be directed at clan wars and company battles but you can still have fun in random groups. Once you have a good variety of tanks in your garage there is no reason to keep paying money to play the game as you can still play for free.
