I think I’m terrible at this game. I like to peek over hills or around corners even when I’m pretty sure I’m going to take a ton of damage if I do. I’m not sure if it’s impatience, bad snap decision-making, or the relatively minor death penalty.

Karmic rebalancing? Please. Personally, if I’m on a losing streak I tend to get impatient. That tends to get me killed early and that tends to result yet more losses. Don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.

That happens to me as well. I’ll get annoyed that my team is full on camping, not using cover or following a strategy of some kind, just camping. Waiting for some idiot to rush. After a while, I will become that idiot against better judgement. It’s stupid. And it usually happens after I’ve been playing for a while. That lets me know it’s time to call it a night.

Fair enough! And I am not that good, my overall win ratio is 50% after 3500 games, though I have specific tanks I tend to do a lot better with, and then a whole bunch I am grinding up largely stock (which is kinda painful… My first 5 matches in the T32 were quite incredibly depressing).

Yeah it was not a serious comment; I don’t believe in karma.

Yeah, I broke down after a while and converted enough experience to get the armored turret and tracks that would let me equip the 105.

I’ve said it before in this thread, but tanks like the stock T32 are basically traps to get power users to spend money on the game. And I’ve made my peace with that. You should do so, too; the T32 is a great tank once you upgrade it, and is basically worthless when firing the 90 from a turret without armor.

This game provides perfect balancing for me. My stats are now 1212 wins and 1212 losses. Almost all my tanks have an exact W/L ratio. My artillery skills are a bit sucky whilst my BT-7 and BT-2 wins make up for it. I suppose I’m one of the game’s natural raiders.

Nah, it’s karma. Or the game is playing with win ratios when matchmaking, depends on your beliefs. :)

Lately, I drive a new completely stock tank only once, to see how bad it is and have some point of reference. After that I always use the converted exp to get the tracks. Some tanks are better, some are worse (E-75 omg) but I hate stock tracks.

Just got the box and applied the code. For a total of $21.74 it gives you 1500 gold, one week of premium, 1,050,000 silver credits, a T2 gold tank and the slot for it. Pretty good deal. Supposedly a $30 value but I didn’t do the math. The T2 comes with a 50% crew and it isn’t bad. I’m going to use some of the gold to bring them up to 100% and have a bit of fun. It reminds me of the good ol’ PzII but faster, at least I think.

Any new player guides out there?

DLed last night and it’s a little overwhelming, just this shitty little tank and i’d like to know what my best path is. I would like to work my way up the US path and get to the Shermans.

Is premium worth it? Is an initila gold purchase for some quick upgrades worthwhile?

No need to buy any premium or gold for the first while. Play for a few days or weeks (say up to tier 4 or 5 tanks) and see how you are enjoying it.

Here’s one quickly-found guide.

One handy tip:
If you die in battle you can freely exit the battle and start one with a different tank at no penalty. When that battle ends you’ll get the xp/credits due exactly as if you had stayed and watched. You get a notification in your garage at the bottom right. So play multiple tanks :)

I’d say a bit of premium is worth it at the beginning - the extra credits and XP will get you into better equipment faster

Picking a tier 5 tank you like the sound of and working down the tree towards it is a good goal for a new player.

Particularly good tanks to go for (in my opinion) are:

The KV - if you like the idea of being a big slow strong wall of steel. The prime example of the Heavy Tank philosophy - move slowly and carry a big gun. Unfortunately it is also pretty bad when you first get it but the final upgraded form of the tank could quite possibly be the best tank in the game, for its tier.

The Panzer IV - if you want to be a long range sniper capable of relocating when spotted, with enough front armour to go toe to toe with other tier 5 mediums and come out ok. If you don’t mind losing some armour for speed and sneakiness, the StuG III is another excellent choice.

The Sherman is (I think I don’t have one) a balanced medium that can do a bit of everything. The Easy 8 one tier down is supposed to be a good tank.

The Su-85 - if all you want in life is a really big gun.

I’m not sure if there’s really any good fast-brawler type tanks at tier 5, but at tier 4 I really like the Panzer III in that role, then the Panzer III/IV after it is quite a nice fast flanking tank, and the VK3601 after it is a very solid all-rounder.

Oh this combat tactics guide is pretty good.

My advice is to buy some gold as soon as you decide you like the game: Increased generation of silver and experience improves every aspect of the game. The game is designed to get you to pay money to play it. When you make your peace with that, it becomes less annoying. The “stock” versions of most new tanks are usually weak, but the fully upgraded versions of most tanks are quite good. The same is true of crews: Investing silver (or gold) in them can greatly improve performance. The less time you spend driving a weak tank, the more you can contribute, and the more fun you have. Plus, the increased generation of silver means it’s less necessary to sell old tanks, which lets you play at different tiers depending on your mood.

If you want to move up the U.S. medium line, I would recommend picking up a M2 light first, which is a fun little tank, and can be a good “secondary” tank when your primary medium is destroyed. Then a T2 Medium (ugh!) followed by a M2 Medium. The M2 Medium can unlock an amazing howitzer which can only fire HE ammo, but can one-shot a lot of lighter vehicles. (Especially if you can line up side or rear shots.) You’ll kick all sorts of butt when you’re top tier.

The M3 Lee follows the M2 Medium. Most people hate the Lee, and regard it as a terrible slog, but I actually sort of enjoyed it. It has a lot of problems: Most notably, it’s hull-mounted gun means you can’t try to play any cute mobility games, so it’s a medium tank that doesn’t “feel” like a medium. It also has a tall profile due to it’s (useless) turret. But the Lee does have a great gun for it’s tier; if you sit back behind friendly tanks you can usually limit the directions you’re taking fire from while unloading solid firepower.

The Lee leads to the Sherman, which is fun and well-rounded. It can get an upgraded verion of the Lee’s gun (now in a turret!) or a 105mm HE-only Howitzer. The Easy-Eight Sherman is also a solid tank, with improved mobility and health (but no option to use the howitzer). I have no experience with the “Jumbo Sherman” but on paper it looks really interesting: Very thick armor, but poor mobility, and the option of using the howitzer. Plus it can lead into the M6 Heavy if you want to jump over to that line.

I liked quite a bit of the tier 3-5 german medium line, no real stinkers there. Even some of the ones I hated in stock form, I started to like a lot when fully upgraded (PzIII being the biggest one here). I particularly enjoyed the PzIIIa and the PzIII/IV. I played the PzIII/IV enough to unlock both the VK3001 (to go towards the Panther medium line) and the VK3601 (to go towards the Tiger heavy line).

Basically you want to pick a line towards some destination, and hopefully has no “stinker” tanks like the M3 Lee or the A-20. Check the WoT wiki (wiki.worldoftanks.eu) to get an idea what to avoid.

Since my roommate hated the M3 Lee, I’ve been slowly going up the other side of the US tree, the M3 Stuart, M5 Stuart, M7 Stuart, and I like this line a lot so far. Although I stopped on the M5 so I can slowly grind for a Chaffee.

My roommate also hated the A-20 so I went up the other side of the Soviet tree and really enjoyed some of those tanks.

Since the TDs and artys are straight lines, there’s not much to think about there. Just pick a line and go up.

Early on you can be playing lots of tanks and advancing along many lines fairly quickly up to tier 4 or so, but then you’ll find you really need to start really focusing on a smaller set to make any significant progress. So pick your targets, you probably want 3 major targets somewhere in the tech trees, ranked in order of preference, and work towards those. If you stick to one nationality you can get some benefit from shared research (ex. I unlocked an 8.8cm gun on my VK3001 that I was able to use on it and the VK3601).

Basically try to remember to have fun. If a particular tank is really just “not fun” for your playstyle, consider ditching it and going a different way, or playing other tanks and using the free xp on the unfun tank to get past it as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Whaaaaaa? How? My vote for most worthless tank I’ve driven in the game goes to that mess. No gun, no speed, no armour, it’s all around bad.

I seem recall the PzIIIa having good speed (fully upgraded) and a really fast gun that had decent penetration but low damage. Basically I just ran around really fast and circled anything smallish and pecked away at it with that gun.

Thanks to the free premium from that IGN deal, I’m finally free of the A-20. Haven’t bought the next tank yet (spent all my money on a KV-3), but I’m so glad to have it out of my garage. Now I just need to ditch the M3 Lee.
