Had to log in this morning to check everything out.

The only thing that was a surprise really was my new tier X, the IS-4, comes fully equipped with a tier VIII gun…wtf?! With about 75 pen less than any other tier X, it’s gonna make those first 60k to unlock the gun EXTRA fun!

Wait, what? The 7.3 In Development Page clearly stated that the IS-4 would come with the top gun:

This is sort of a big deal for me, since I did end up using some gold to jump into an IS-4, in part based on that information.

If you had the S70 you got the big 122, if not you didn’t.

I’d recommend unlocking it on the IS-8 since it can at least mount the BL9. Trying to grind it out on the IS-4 with the D25… well you might as well hammer nails into your dick and then set your balls on fire.

I’m still getting a feel for the new Soviet heavies but I’ve already fallen in love with the KV4. I managed to kill 9 of the enemy in one match- the tank sure takes a beating. That was one of those perfect match-making sessions where there were two tier 8s and lots of tier 6es to rip apart. It’s like a mini KV5 with a gun that actually works.

The fully upgraded IS-4 is a beast. Tough, and it hits pretty hard. Feels different from my IS-7, certainly. I sold the KV-1, KV-2, and T-150. Keeping the KV-3 to check out the -4 and the ST-1. Haven’t run the IS-8 yet. Oh, and the new premium French arty looks…odd. Fires fast but does very little damage it seems.

I came all over my computer this morning when i discovered my soviet heavy’s went and made a whole bunch o babies. That IS-8 is awesome.

And then they put the type59 back on sale. just after my birfday. so i got me one of those too. sacked and hired commanders until i had one named Wang.

my garage is like a huge toybox full of goodies and i feel like a poor kid who never had anything but a ball of string to play with :P

I’d be totally fine if they didn’t give you the big X gun to start, but to give you a lower tier VIII is pretty inexcusable. You’ll be outgunned by most tier 8s and out penetrated by some tier 7s…WTF

It’s clearly a decision that was driven by a desire to not have people try to “shortcut” into a Tier X heavy. It would be fine, except for the fact that the WoT webpage stated (and still states!) that when the IS-4 moved up to Tier X it would have the top gun.

I get why they did it, but they couldve given you the BL-9, which iirc you needed to unlock before getting the old IS-4.

As it is now, you could get on a royally screwed team, fielding 3 IS-4s with Tier8 guns vs 3 IS-4s with Tier10 guns…there’s already complaints about this on the forums, and rightfully so, imo…

Okay, maybe I’m missing something here (I don’t have an IS-4 or any other top-tier tank). How are they supposed to earn their upgrades without driving them?

The top gun can be unlocked by driving the IS-8, which is a lower tier (9) tank and where the grind with an inferior gun is less painful and less disruptive to the matchmaking. Though, I’m not sure I’m as sanguine as schurem is about this. A lot of people are more casual players–even at higher tiers–and probably haven’t mastered the nuances of the upgrades and the bizarre logic of the matchmaker.

So I am full bottle on mid Tier soviet heavies!

Not sure which to keep. I used to keep the (old) KV around because it was an excellent credit earner with the zis-6 107mm - cheap ammo, low repair costs overall and you could damage Tier 6-7+ tanks with ease, thus earning credits. As an added bonus you ended up in the occasional ROFL STOMP ZOMG match where you were the top tank and could pwnzor everything. (SU-85B can still do that of course :-)
Potentially the KV-2 can take this money earning place now.

The new KV-1 looks appropriate for its tier and largely vanilla, suspect that is one I will drop.

I’ve had the KV-1S for a while and it will never be a big earner as the top gun is very expensive (and slow) to shoot. Functionally, its very much like a “junior” version of the IS and thus rendered obsolete (gameplay experience wise) by having the IS. Suspect I will drop/sell this one as I’ve unlocked everything and moved most of the crew to the new KV-3 as a result.

new KV-3 looks interesting and looks like I will actively play to move up that side of the heavy tree. KV-4 is getting good early reports.

Still playing the IS - have unlocked everything now except the next tank.

T-150 is technically redundant as I have the tank above, but I think I will play and unlock fully - it has the same zis6 107mm as KV-2 (and “old” KV) so could be a good credit earner.

Interestingly the existing stats I had for KV are still there, applied to “new” KV. KV-3 stats have disappeared.

How well does the Type 59 earn credits by the way? Appreciably better or worse than the Lowe? I assume the Lowe is the gold standard for credit earning?

I really like the example of Tiger and VK3601H, so I assume I will enjoy Lowe. Type 59’s seem like they get to rip it up with glee though.

I agree with you, I can easily see people not noticing that the gun on the IS-8 is the same as that on the IS-4 and that they should therefore unlock it before advancing.

Credit wise, it seems Lowe>T34>Type 59, at least after 7.2. I’ve had more 100k+ games on the T34 than on the Type, but YMMV. Lowe seems to still eclipse both of 'em. KV-5 I’ve heard is also solid, though. The big difference is play style. The Lowe is a slow sniper. The T34 is a slow mid-range tank, which can brawl if you protect your hull. The Type is a reasonably fast and flexible medium. The KV-5 is a slow mobile pillbox with a so-so gun.
