Maybe it’s to reduce ganking in the more hub-like quest zones, like the Ebon Blade stuff in Northrend?
Hopefully this rule doesn’t apply to quests. Otherwise, all that time I spent racking up a bunch of quests to complete first thing tonight will have all been for naught.
Sounds like a consequence of there being only five new levels instead of ten. If you’re a completionist like me, who has to track down damn near every quest possible in every zone, you could probably wind up around level 83-84 by the time you’re finished the Northrend content and now you’re already nearly done with leveling versus Cata content.
To which you could argue “well so what, let them!”, but maybe the WoW content designers have a particular way they’d like to see progression proceed. A ‘vision’, if you will…
I would guess it’s because tbc mobs are tuned to be harder than vanilla, wrath harder than tbc, etc. They want your experience gain to be proportionate to the difficulty of the things you’re killing.
I think there was always something funny going on with old world XP. I remember being level 60 in EPL after I had Burning Crusade. I got XP for kills in EPL, of course, but it seemed to pale to the XP I got for kills of a similar level in BC.

How about the obvious: They are trying to sell more expansions.
On my mage alt (wearing full heirloom gear and taking advantage of rested XP), I was able to go from 70-80 doing only Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord, Dragonblight, and Grizzly Hills (I received the achievement for completing X number of quests in each of those areas). I didn’t do a single quest in any other Northrend zone. There are more than 300 quests from WotLK still available to my mage; doing those would probably take me to level 83 or 84.
I guess Blizzard doesn’t want me to miss any of the Cata questing experience but they’re ok with my mage skipping half of Northrend? How does that make any sense? If anything, wouldn’t players finishing up quests in Northrend past level 80 alleviate the problem first encountered in Hellfire Peninsula where too many players were all going after the same quests? Isn’t that why they created two different 70-72 and 80-82 zones in Wrath and Cata, respectively?
This doesn’t make sense to me. In order to level past 80 you have to have the expansion, don’t you? So reducing the experience you get in old zones without the expansion would be meaningless.
By being in full heirloom gear, arguably as a customer you’ve experienced the full Northrend content. Both my mains (non heirloomed) hit 80 roughly in Icecrown. Now that they’ve lessened the xp curve, I could see a new player hitting 80 in Storm Peaks.
Yes, that’s true. I did experience most of Northrend on another character first. However, my main (without heirloom gear and rested XP) hit 80 about half-way through Storm Peaks and had roughly ~200 quests remaining in that zone and Icecrown upon reaching the level cap, but I obsessively completed every quest in each of the proceeding zones and also ran a few dungeons (Nexus, Old Kingdom, Utgarde Keep, etc.) while I was leveling up.
However, with the reduced XP requirements to reach 80, I imagine new players now have the equivalent of heirlooms+rested on their first characters, so it’s entirely possible they will miss a good portion of TBC and Wrath content because of this change unless they go back and complete those zones later as part of the Loremaster achievement.
I just don’t see what Blizzard’s goal is with this. Obviously the new 80-85 zones are going to be amazing because the quest designers now have years of experience to build upon, but if people want to level up their characters by finishing “old” zones, why discourage it? Would it not reduce player congestion in the new areas, thus making the experience better for everyone?
Possible explanation: since quest reward XP is converted to gold at the level cap, maybe they want to limit inflation by preventing players from reaching 85 (or close to it) in the pre-Cata zones and then doing all the new quests at the cap for the gold reward?
Skill as in how good the player is or skill as in abilities your character can cast? Because I agree with your statement in the latter case and think it’s utterly ridiculous in the former.
My theory is that a bunch of Cataclysm is apparently phased with some critical things being locked behind phases (like the profession trainers in Twilight Highlands). If you’re letting people level quickly in Wrath, when they come to Cata they’ll probably be pretty mad to see they have to do intro quest lines to get to features they expected.
But really, that’s just a more specific variation of “this is how we designed the game and we think you’ll have the most fun if you play it this way.” Which is, I think, the obvious answer here.
There wasn’t, you still got the same amount of XP you always did, it’s just that the TBC mobs gave you vastly more experience.
Wow, I’m actually impressed with Future Shop’s shipping for once. I wasn’t really in any hurry for Cata, so I picked the free shipping option figuring I could wait a few days, and yet here it is sitting on my desk on release day.
So… I’m just getting back into WoW. I realize this isn’t the Mod thread, but I didn’t want to wade through everything in there for a couple of quick mod questions.
I just want a UI that gives me the bar across the top. I used to use TitanBar and the FuBar. I’m going to use Carbonite for mapping… And what mod lets me move the winows around?
Thanks for any suggestions. Good to be back to WoW again!
Picked up a copy over lunch. Best Buy had well over one hundred regular boxes and about thirty Collector’s Editions sitting on a table at the front of the store. I’m assuming there were even more on the shelf. The Collector’s didn’t appeal to me, but if you couldn’t find one anywhere else…go to the store!

UPS is reporting an incorrect street address when tracking my package from Amazon. Bleh!
The specific error on UPS is “A CORRECT STREET NUMBER IS NEEDED FOR DELIVERY. UPS IS ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN THIS INFORMATION”
I can’t seem to contact their customer service without having a UPS InfoNotice, which is only received after a failed delivery… Not sure how they’d leave that notice without a correct street number. My Shipping Address on my Amazon order is correct., street number and all, too.
Has anyone else experienced this before when having something shipped by UPS from Amazon, or anyone else for that matter?
Boo!
Yes.
You are boned.
My condolences. It happened for me with wine and a burned vacation day.

I’m assuming I can just go pick it up tonight at the UPS facility.
I hope I am not wrong. :(
Oh - well if you know where that is, then yes - you do have that option. I did that when I lived in a smaller town and I wouldn’t have been on the road for over an hour just to get my box. If it was sent out on a truck but they can’t find your house, you just have to make sure you get there after the trucks are back (probably south of 8:00 PM).

FuBar is still out there, but I prefer Bazooka to it now.

Out of curiosity, why do you prefer Bazooka to, say, Titan Panel? Is it just the look and feel?
