I will say this, I got a Mammoth Traveling Tundra (16,000 14,000 exalted) and it has been a godsend. It stops you from ever having to go back to town. One of the biggest time savers ever.
I think you’re exaggerating a bit. The gimmick quests are by far in the minority, though there are more in the game than there used to be.
Not only that, but some of them are completely and totally awesome.
Gnomebliteration. The only thing it needs is the theme music to Katamari Damacy.

Did you see that one of the rewards for that quest was called the Kata Mary Mace or something? :)
Creating a new character, the quest in Redridge title "“AAAAAAAAHHHHH AAAAHHHHHH!!” is gold. You drive a steam tank around redridge while a Rambo type in your gunnery position kills 200+ orcs and screams Rambo-like things…

I don’t have the stomach to play through the goblin area again, so I’m not going to go through and count it, but I find it hard to believe the number of quests where you use your class skills is more than the number of quests which feature some gimmick that makes your class irrelevant at least between the levels 1 and 18 (currently half way through azshara). But even if it were at about half that’s not, “by far in the minority.”
I’m still confused how people are levelling this fast. It’s taking me about 10-15 hours per level from 65-70 and I’ve been 70 for 11 hours of questing. Very little wasted time other than killing quest mobs and turning in quests.
Those gimmick quests suck ass already once you will level your alts through them.
I did them on my lock again as I shelved my rogue and I was tapping my foot while doing them + watching all those cutscenes again.
A pitty as Blizzard probably spend the most of the dev time creating / polishing them.
Regarding Outland leveling:
Do Hellfire, Zangenmarsh, Shattrath and then go straight to Nagrand skipping Terrokar.
You will either ding 68 for Northrend in Nagrand or need some more quests in Blade Edge’s Mountains.
Nagrand has tons of quests and most are pretty close to the quest hubs for handing in.
Terrokar has fewer quests and needs more running around slowing you down.
You should need 3-4 hours max per level.
Even 80-85 is not that slow (2 hours to 81 and then 3 hours for 81-84 ending with around 5-6 hours for the big jump from 84 to 85).
5-6 hours for 84-85 is a little quick, I’d say. I was looking at 8 hours even with my Guild experience bonuses and without doing much in the way of gathering or AHing in the meantime.
I think you’re just better at leveling, intruder. :)

Not sure about 10-15 hours per level in Outland, that’s very very slow indeed.
Can I hit the cata zones at 78, or do I need to reach 80 first?

The quests that lead to the new zones will not appear below that.

Substantiative comment? Like pointing out how blues and the PvP community at large considers mages overpowered and everyone is struggling with them not just our friendly neighborhood forum DK?
Also let me check AaronSofaer stalkerbook/twitter hack to remind myself of the details of your gaming habits and characters.
Thanks for the cute compliment though.
BTW, win trading is officially in full effect. On Moonie, the Alliance lost TB in two minutes two hours ago, with 10 seperate people in the Raid telling everyone “Let the Horde Win… fight on the roads”

Yeah I was kinda surprised to see that happen, but at least it means that it’s changing hands more often.

We did do a few instances yes, mostly though we only did quests that were orange or red. My companion did have heirloom gear and was a arcane mage so we averaged a quest every 5 or maybe 10 minutes (some quicker some slower than that as well). We didn’t loot anything and she knew which quests to avoid because they would suck up a great deal of time either through grinding for drops, travelling or other considerations. We got out of Hellfire Peninsula asap.
Also of note I did have rested bonus from sitting in the inn for 3 years and I’ve been hearthing back each night, I just ran out at level 70. Also helps when you join instances to ask for the quests to be shared instead of getting them before hand, travelling to get them can take a fair bit of time.

I did my first heroic tonight - Blackrock Caverns. It was a three-hour wipefest that I eventually bailed on because I was too tired to continue. And we were only half done when I had to leave.
It wasn’t fun.
This was an all-guild run, all of us good players. It’s just that in the gear you come out of normals with, heroics are too damn hard.
My WoW subscription runs out in mid-January. I think I’m going to level my Worgen druid as far as I can between now and then and not renew. I don’t mind playing a game where you have to fail in order to learn. Playing a game where failure means hours and hours of lost time? That, I mind.

Necrotic strike is right up there with all the other overpowered abilities btw.
