World of Warcraft Networking issue

So I have two PC’s that run WoW at the same time. The issue that I’m having is that one of the PC’s will have a ping of 90 while the other one has a ping in the 200s which is no bueno. Things I’ve tried… Port forwarding to the PC with the higher ping - No dice Disabling all Addons - Does nothing Checked for background processes - None because the PC with the higher ping is my gaming PC which has a minimal amount of crap on it. So what the hell could be causing the other PC to have almost double the ping of the other one. I just noticed it recently when I got back into wow and it wasn’t like this before.

Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to help you with your problem I don’t think, but whoever will be able to help you will need to know how you are networking your PC’s. Wireless? Hub? Are you using a repeater or bridge?

Hardwired in to the same router actually. I really have no idea what could be causing it honestly. I guess it could be a NIC issue with the PC with the higher ping but really I don’t know.

Speaking from absolute ignorance and out of the seat of my pants, it sounds like you might have some form of QoS going on that’s discriminating one computer from the other. This would be a router problem, if I’m guessing correctly.

I never go below 200. It’s never been a problem for me (I play a healer now though).

A test you might try: unplug all other devices from the router and see if you keep the same ping. You probably will.

Perhaps the network settings in windows on the gaming pc could be tweaked for a lower ping. Google points me here for registry settings.

As anecdotal evidence, I disabled nagling windows-side, and it shaved off 100 MS off my WoW ping.

My guess would be related to hardware. Check ping times outside of WoW: Just open a command window and ping a known domain (like, for example, google.com) on both machines. If you’ve got one slower than the other, than look at replacing your NIC on the slow machine.

If replacing the NIC doesn’t do the trick, then you want to look at upgrading your router.

If the pings outside of WoW are both the same, then you might be experiencing an issue with internal routing on your router. If that’s the case, then upgrading your router might do the trick there as well, as you’ll get something with a little more muscle to push the packets around.

I run a pretty standard off the shelf Linksys. The only thing I did to it was upgrade to DD-WRT, as the wireless mode was swamped when my Blackberry connected to it when it used the stock software.

So I think that worked. I’m sitting at about a 65 ms ping now. Thanks!

Oh yeah this is the guide I used. It seems to have worked I guess. The ping is always under 90 now.
