My understanding is that the buff will eventually rise to 30%.
What I find funny about these conversations is that all the “casual” players fall right into the trap they’re accusing the “hardcore” players of being in, and are utterly blind to it. You guys are just as obsessed with e-peen as anyone, arguably moreso, manifested in the form of a ton of resentment aimed at higher-performing guilds and players. You all balk at the notion that they should receive any extra reward or incentive. It’s like the old “we want to see the content” canard. People don’t want to see the content, they’re just upset that people have shinier purples than they do. That’s what it’s been about since vanilla, and that’s what it’s about now, despite the fact that that gap has closed a great deal.
The presence of the buff is actually a win for the e-peen obsessed. Incentives are an extremely powerful force in WoW, and without a formal one to do ICC without the buff there’s tremendous downward pressure to use it. That’s a loss for people who enjoy challenging content, not people who want a bigger e-peen. The e-peeners win – they get easier access to the best loot, titles and achievements in the game, and no one can tell the difference.
P.S. e-peen, e-peen, e-peen e-peen. E-peen.
Oh boy, out come the strawmen. Can we just pretend that we already went over the casuals vs. hardcores for the umptieth time and get back to talking about interesting things? I’m very sorry I contributed to it as well.
I was really glad to see the Mangle change in the notes. Not that I think cats are currently too weak or too complex (though my alt is certainly way more difficult to play than my hunter), but it always bugged me that feral DPS suddenly became about 30% easier and more efficient when an arms warrior was around.

Hm, I guess I’m an aberration because I actually do want to see the game. I leveled Alliance and Horde characters to see the differences in the quests. I run older 5-man stuff like Mauradon or Stratholme to see what I missed while leveling.
I would love to run Ulduar or Naxx to see the content, but it’s hard to get a group. Our server has regular groups who do BC raids and I have joined them on occasion to see the content, even though Badges of Justice and the loot are basically useless to me.
Actually, I think there are a fair amount of these people (I like to think of myself as one of them, though I tend to prefer to experience content at its intended challenge level, because that’s where I find it most satisfying). But as you point out, people who actually want to do this are able to do so in subsequent expansions and/or at higher gear levels, which I think is great. I’m in absolute agreement that legacy content should remain highly accessible. But I don’t think those were the kinds of feelings that drove the old “see the content!” debates for the most part.
It wouldn’t matter to me at all. What does matter to me is this kind of pompous garbage:
If you want to be first, or have a title that says you are awesome, that’s fine. If you are using it to look down on other players as “retards,” then the problem is you. There is simply no excuse for this pusillanimous arrogance.

I have kind of accepted that casuals will be able to see all content but this buff is tempering with the “raiding game” that is still in full swing at least until the Lich King HC is on farm.
Pretty sure the normal mode raiding game ended when first guild down LK, and the current raiding game is about heroic ICC.
2nd place is the first loser.
I absolutely agree. I would appreciate it if you’d edit your post to indicate that the second quote is not from me, though :)

I don’t really have an opinion on the buff one way or the other, but I’m amusing myself considering what will happen to guilds who still have trouble progressing in ICC as the buff grows.
To some degree, the buff will help some guilds compensate for a lack of gear and/or skill. It’ll be that little extra boost to help them over the hump on some fights. Those guilds will be happy.
But what about the guilds who think they’re close but are actually being held back by people too dumb to not stand in fire or avoid Icehowl? As the buff increases, gear will become less of an issue and the biggest barrier to progression, plain and simple, will be clumsy, unskilled players. It’s easy for me to envision guilds losing patience and imploding because they’re averaging 7 or 8k DPS per person and remaining stuck at 6 or 7 bosses down.
I think it could get entertaining. :)

I’m actually somewhat in this situation - if you read through this thread you’ll see that my raid has been progressing veeeeeeeery slowly and has a variety of issues. I have no idea if I’m going to disable the buff or not on Sunday - I know they’re going to want it enabled. Right now I’m leaning toward turning it off.

Maybe. I don’t want the buff papering over serious problems that my raiders have, though.

that 5% won’t really help if you raider have issues relating to lack of understanding about the boss encounters.
Yeah, what idrisz said. 5% isn’t going to prevent people getting 1shot by Empowered Flame or Shadow Lance on Princes, it’s not going to let a raid with people pulling 3k DPS down Festergut, and it’s not going to let people survive face-tanking Unstable Explosion on Rotface.
I suspect that this buff is almost necessary to kill the Lich King with a “pure” 10-man raid unless it is an optimized group consisting of very good players. It’s pretty hard even if you have 25-man gear to be honest. The difference between ToC and ICC is considerable, it’s just much harder, in some cases the normal ICC is comparable to heroic ToC.
Well, my guild has lost about 5 or 6 hardcore raiders to the horde side, because they want the uber pvp racials. At least before they went, they managed to fuck up the guild with a bunch of horrible infighting first. Oh, WoW guild drama - won’t you ever change?
I guess they were also mad that we weren’t progressing fast enough, having only just downed Putricide a couple of weeks ago and still not killing BQL. I find that awesome, because one of the guys who threw a fit before he left managed to get hit by malleable goo 4 times in a single attempt just last week. He also refused to do anything but DPS, and by that I don’t mean he refused to off-heal when asked (although he did, but whatever), but he would also refuse to dps anything but the boss. Thanks, team player!
I imagine it’s just a coincidence that they’ve all applied to guilds who are working on LK, and that they just cleared out their DKP
Do guilds have HR departments?
