Death Knights tend to get a lot of shit in general in PuGs. I just recently hit 80 on mine and started running some heroics. His gear is poop, but I can still put out more than enough damage for everything except for maybe heroic Halls of Reflection. Some people just have this overinflated view of what dps should be in a 5 man. I don’t care how good you are, you’re not going to be putting out fantastic damage right at 80. Just last night I had to deal with a warrior tank complaining that I was a DK for no reason I could understand. “I really hope that DK isn’t your main”, he says. I mean, no, the DK isn’t my main, but who gives a fuck?
Robot,
I remember when my hunter in TBC was the whipping boy of groups, but now in Wrath, the only comment I got was on an early heroic about 2.4k GS, at which point everyone in the group told the guy to STFU.
The obsession with absolute perfect efficiency is eroding my interest in WoW somewhat. I mean, I know that that’s what is fun for some people and that’s fair enough, it’s just when it starts becoming the only metric by which everyone else judges you…
Edit: Though it could be considered an inherent flaw in the Dungeon Finder design to begin with. You’re not going to be able to make new friends and hook up with them regularly through it, so nobody really has any reason to care about anything other than your ability to damage/heal.

PUGs in general are a real crapshoot (at least in my battlegroup). Most of the ones I run are fine, but occasionally you get the asshat DPS linker, or the guy who is afk the whole time.
My suggestion to you is to simply not type a single thing in PUGs, even in response to the “your DPS sux!!!” comments. 2700 dps is absolutely fine for any heroic and even if all three DPS in the group were at that level stuff would still die in a couple global cooldowns.
Unless you get a pre-made group of four guildies, it’s unlikely that any vote to kick would survive, so just don’t sweat it and get your frost badges like everyone else.

Green gems are so cheap they’re almost free. If money is that tight you can gem with those for now. I’m not a total efficiency freak but if someone has no gems that’s a signal to me that something is wrong.
My main is an unholy DK as well, so I’ll put in the standard rotations below, if that helps:
Single target
PS - IT - BS - SS - BS - DC - HoW
SS - BS - SS - BS - DC - DC - (DC)
AoE
IT - PS - Pest - DnD - DC - HoW
SS - BS - BB - SS - DC - DC
SS - Pest - DnD - DC - HoW
I’m sure you could gem out with greens and a meta for under 100g. Hell if you were on my server i’d spot you cash for them. i only put purple gems in IL 232 and up though.
Thanks, that the rotation I’m doing (although I’m guilty of forgetting HoW. Stupid N00B question: which green gems should I get?

Yeah, I agree with this. 2.7k dps is perfectly fine. As others have said, if every person I came across did that much I’d be happy. I don’t know why you were getting cussed out for that.
But at the same time, not gemming or enchanting any of your gear makes you look like a jerk, and will likely annoy people. It basically says to your group members that you don’t really give a fig and you want them to carry you through. Get some common or rare gems (aside from red ones, rare gems are also pretty cheap), put them in your gear. You can use hybrid gems (str/crit maybe?) instead of pure ones if they are almost as good, as they will be much cheaper. I use sp/haste instead of sp on my mage because it is only about 4 dps less, and costs much less. You should be able to gem your gear for less than 100 gold.
Enchant at least the 232 level gear you have. You don’t need to go for the top of the line enchant, just something (+8 stats to chest instead of +10, for instance). With the collapse in enchanting mats, you should be able to enchant things pretty cheaply.
I can swing a couple-hundred gold. It was the 250g a pop gems holding me back.

Definitely don’t get epic gems. That is a waste for heroics, as you said. But you can get rare or common gems for much cheaper, and really not lose that much DPS.
As far as what to gem, I’d just gem Strength. In everything. :)
With of course a Strength/Stam gem for your meta.
My rule of thumb is epic gems in anything that isn’t likely to be replaced very soon. Obviously that’s not always clear, which is why I tend to just put epic gems in everything (they’re easy enough to come by since you can get them for honor or badges these days). As for what to gem, Unholy DKs just stack strength, so Bold [Whatevers], with one Nightmare Tear to activate your meta.
So, get a ton of these: http://www.wowwiki.com/Perfect_Bold_Bloodstone
with a http://www.wowwiki.com/Perfect_Sovereign_Shadow_Crystal for the meta.
And thanks for the heads-up on gemming. It seemed for a while as soon as I’d gem something, it’d get upgraded, but with the emblem gear, I’m at a plateau for a bit anyway.
Perfects aren’t worth it. Just gem with regular Bold Bloodstones, and throw Bold Scarlet Rubies in your ilevel 232+ gear.

As LesJarvis said above, if you have a bit of extra cash, using a Nightmare Tear is a good way to fulfill your meta requirements.

2700 is not fine in all heroics. Most, yes. ICC 5mans, not really. For H HoR 3k-3.5k is the goal for the LK gauntlet part and in general T9 geared dps should be pushing those numbers. That said, its also going to depend on the fights. In the original LK heroic instances, many classes will have problems putting out high dps because the mobs just die to fast for them to ramp up dps. Oh and most pugs these days are populated with angry hate filled raging wankers. I’m often one of them, namely when something that should be easy goes horribly wrong due to incompetence or arrogance. That or I get placed into Forge of Souls on my healer with a tank that turned 80 yesterday and has only 30k HP buffed.
There was a blue post yesterday in the general forum responding to a post about tanks leaving when HoR shows up in the random queue and Bornakk called tanks lazy when doing that. Led to a 20+ page thread of amusement. It was hard to tell if Bornakk was trolling or serious. LFD has a lot of positives, engendering a loving community who holds hands while skipping through the meadows isn’t one of them.
Regarding rogues, I agree on dropping wound for instant and rupture is a waste of time unless you’re running around a lot away from the boss. I started playing my rogue again last month and saw decent jumps in dps after dropping rupture and poison switch. T9 gear helped too. I still hate that 5pt evis non crits are weaksauce though.
How the hell is he getting in HFoS newly-minted. Isn’t there a GS requirement for those?
My very first random put me in FOS, and my first random heroic put me in HFOS. Maybe it’s a rite of passage? That said, I did normals for a few weeks before I was comfortable moving to heroics. Of course that’s when I realized that people far less geared than me queued for heroics.
The only dungeon that should give you trouble with 2700 dps is hHOR. It just requires everyone to be on the top of their game. My wife and I are a pretty solid bear tank/resto shaman combo in heroics and sometimes we get sunk by DPS just not killing stuff fast enough there.
As an aside: does Volley on hunters over-ride autoshot? The last group I was in, for some reason on my hunter’s damage was about 1.5k lower than normal. I’m not sure why – I think I was just having an off run. I generally volley for 3+ pulls after stinging one and siccing my pet on it. One guy in the group was pissed off when I didn’t have a target selected. I didn’t think with Volley I needed to, since the channeling clipped auto anyway.
Is the standard hunter practice to Volley on large pulls, or am I relying on it too much?

You don’t need to have a target selected to volley. The guy is an idiot. It is a perfectly fine AOE, so any trash that calls for AOE you can use volley on. Hell, Hunters in ICC25 volley some of those large trash packs.
