I have an alchemist but I don’t farm much herbs with her so I didn’t get many Lotus (too boring).
In the past I mostly bought flasks for raiding with gold gotten via dailies / daily instance.
Now I have plenty of Frost Lotus via Orbs and the rest of the herbs is easily farmed.
I will give it to a guildie that is elixir master now for possible procs instead of buying them any longer.
-> Lost sales on the AH

FL now has an effective AH value of 25g, which is half of the 50g value it held before (I made a killing dumping accumulated FL when I saw this change coming). This means that you are right, farming herbs until you get a FL proc (I see almost no difference in the drop rate, except maybe outside of Wintergrasp) is now half as productive as it used to be.
If you aren’t an elixir master, it’s always 2 flasks per FL. But you also need other materials such as Enchanted Vials, Pygmy Oil, and Icethorn, and those haven’t dropped in price. So your fixed costs other than FL stay the same.
So what if you buy/exhange FL? Instead of 100g per FL, you now get 60g. (This arguably includes the losses caused by increased competition due to other alchemists entering the marketplace due to an unconstrained supply of FL.) You lose 40g in sale price by saving 25g in materials costs, resulting in a net loss of 15g per flask pair from your margins.
Any loss of margin makes me question whether I should just fly around and do dailies for cash.

I think another big reason gem markets are sinking right now is because there’s a new supply source: people who’ve completely run out of things to spend Triumph badges on. Once you’ve bought all your T9, a full PvP set and maybe some heirlooms, all you can do is buy uncut gems from the Heroism vendor, and it’s nice money.
If anything, the number of people turning emblems into gems is only going to grow, so if you’ve got a huge stockpile of Triumph stockpiled and no idea what to do with it, you’re probably better off selling gems sooner than later.
Yeah but why should you unless you want to buy a chopper, the hilt or epic flying for alts?
I probably should empty my banks in preparation for Cataclysm but I’m too lazy.
No need to spend any amount of gold that is not easily coming back within 1-2 weeks with dailies / daily heroic / weekly heroic right now.

There’s plenty of stuff to spend gold on right now, even at high levels. BoE 264’s out of ICC, Ashen Verdict craftables or Primordial Saronite to get stuff made yourself.
If you’re sitting on 100-200 Triumph badges and nothing to spend them on, you’re talking about near-zero effort to turn that into 2000 gold or so.

I’ve made about 30k gold in the last 6 weeks or so selling primordial saronites. The market has dipped recently, but you can still get 1700-1800g for them on my server, and I can easily net enough frost emblems in a week to buy 2.5.
I don’t bother with dailies or professions anymore.

Kirin Tor rings dont buy themselves. There’s plenty of gold-sinks in the game, and some of them are even handy (like a ring that teleports to Dalaran and frees up your hearthstone).
I’ve given up on current enchants, and now I mostly sell the scrolls people want for heirloom gear. +30 Spellpower (assuming Golden Pearls are not overpriced, but they usually are), +22 Intellect, +25 Agility to 2h (better margin than +15 to 1h). Not Crusader though, too much competition. I wish I had +4 stats to chest, it is in demand and very rare. +22 Intellect seems to sell best, and has the least competition (probably because you must rep grind for it a bit, instead of farming MC bosses).
I also sell two BC enchants that still have high margins. +30 Intellect to weapon is the best (costs 125g to make, sells for 400-450), and once in a while I can sell a +35 Agility to 2h (make about 150g on those). Mongoose has too much competition, I think because the formula is too easily farmed now, so the mats are best used for something else.

Who leaves Dalaran anymore? Plus the hearthstone is up after half an hour now.
Oh there are still plenty of times I wish I could recall to Dalaran more often. I pop off to check the Shattrath fishing daily (damn you Snarly, get in my pet collection!), hearth back, head out west to do Ghostfish/Aces High…and then have to take the long, expensive flight back east to work on Argent Crusade/Tournament/etc.

All this proves that there are still numerous ways to play the money game as long as you are flexible and realize that every profitable market may eventually attract enough people to make it less worthwhile. That’s part of the fun IMO.
I got the Deathbringer’s Will trinket from a 25-man ICC pug on Monday night. Other DPSers wanted to buy it from me but I’m not giving up an iLevel 264 trinket!

it’s like the best trinket for physical dps right now. if someone want to buy it, they better start the bid around 25k gold.

Just to close out my transmutation qq saga. On Saturday I dropped and retrained transmutation mastery. On Sunday I got a bonus gem. Of course I’ll never know for sure if one thing was related to the other, but it sure felt like it fixed it.

Hah. Yeah, alchemy is a harsh mistress. I got an extra proc almost every day for a week, but since then I only get a few a week. I think it is all just RNG, though. The proc rate is supposed to be about 15%, so you can get lucky for a while, then unlucky. At least with the base transmutation you still make a decent amount of cash. They could play games where your chance to proc goes up when you don’t do it consistently, but that would be somewhat harsh of them, if it was hidden.
It is still better than the other specializations I think, given that flask prices have collapsed (at least on my server). I keep buying a bunch because the prices are down, but then they go down further! I think tank flasks were down to something absurd like 18 gold each the other day.

22g on my server. Why bother making them anymore when they are that cheap?
Welcome to the pre-expension glut of profession toppers, I suppose.

I think it is more due to the collapse in Frost Lotus pricing.

Yeah, you had an announcement a few weeks in advance that Frozen Orbs, ~6g at the time, would be tradable for Frost Lotus on a 1-to-1 basis. People stocked up like crazy, and naturally the prices converged. Both Orbs and Lotus now go for a similar 20g on my server.

2 person flying mount that’s 310%!!!

Its only 310 if you already have a 310 mount. Though they aren’t that hard to get nowadays if you are a reasonable serious raider. But yeah, I wish all mounts worked like that. I’m going to be staring at my rusted protodrake until the end of time.
