Must have DS games?

I picked up a DS over the weekend, and am enjoying the hell out of the 2nd Phoenix Wright game.

What others that stand out on the system should I keep my eyes open for?

KIRBY CANVAS CURSE

Possibly the best game ever…

Puzzle Quest has its hooks in me pretty deep. It’s a great game to have on a portable device, which is a pretty key distinction for me. Nintendo puts out some fun games, but they don’t all lend themselves to being as easily interruptible and pick-back-upable.

Which is fine, if you’re not concerned about that. I rarely sit at home (with my PC and 360 and Wii and PS2 and Tivo and comic books and laundry to do) and crack open the DS, but I use the DS all the time when I’m out, so Puzzle Quest is great. That’ll be true of most puzzlers I guess, but even something like Meteos isn’t quite as easy to just snap shut. You’ll probably screw something up there because you’re going to be right in the middle of a move or whatever.

Puzzle Quest!

I still can’t put it down!

Also, if you like rouge-like games, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is good fun.

Slitherlink, Slitherlink, and Slitherlink.

And, if you are into roguelikes, Izuna is a much better choice than Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

And I can’t find it and I hate all of you.

Tell me more of this Izuna.

What I’ve read is it’s brutal on you if you die.

PMD at least let you try to get rescued. I have both the DS and Advance version so i can rescue myself. (my kid didnt like it, so I have both)

lol, a couple of my friends can’t find it either, and they hate me.

One of the women I work with tried it on my DS and she said she loves Bejeweled and thought PQ is a great idea. She found a copy and appearently her son doesn’t get to use his DS much at this time.

Well, its a roguelike, and by definition, roguelikes are iron man. If you die, you’re dead, game over, thats it. Izuna isn’t that brutal, if you die you loose any carried items and respawn in town. You keep any earned experience and levels. You can store items in the bank, you don’t loose those when you die. There is also a way to enchant your weapon so that you don’t loose it when you die.

Eb online still has it in stock .

As for other great DS games, Meteos is another great puzzle game, for platformers I’ve heard good things about Yoshi’s Island 2 and New Super Mario Bros was good while it lasted. The castlevania games are another favorite of mine, and people here were talking about Lunar Knights as a great game.

I just ordered Puzzle Quest off Amazon.com. No instant gratification, but I got tired of looking for it in stores.

Back on topic: I’d say Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney (the first one) and Trauma Center are must haves.

Advance Wars and Mario Kart DS (possibly the best Mario Kart ever, imo).

Part of what I look for in a DS game is something that will actually use the touch pad in an innovative way and give me some kind of experience that I’m not likely to get on any other platform. Elite Beat Agents fit this bill pretty well and I’m enjoying it. On the other hand, Nintendogs was long on touchpad use but short on actual fun after the first few hours.

And then there’s Mario Kart DS, which doesn’t use the touch pad at all, but which I’d consider a must have game just because it’s so fun. A lot of people will probably recommend the Advance War DS game, too, though I have to admit that it didn’t do much for me.

It’s a list thread! Here I go again! (i’m sure it’s a different list than last time…too lazy to search for the other threads)

Elite Beat Agents, for the best musical simon game EVAR!
Ossu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, the prequel to Elite Beat Agents, for the wacky Japanese flavor!
Puzzle Quest, the Krazy Glue between the DS and your hands.
Metroid Prime Pinball.
Clubhouse Games, if you want some old skool card/board game fun.

Kirby Canvas Curse is great just for the unique game mechanic, but I was pretty tired of it by the time I reached the end. But those first couple of hours were big fun.

Ossu Tatakae Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents are both fun, if you like rhythm games. I don’t like rhythm games, but I like J-Pop, which means that I still haven’t unlocked “hard” level in Ouendan.

Advance Wars is pure love. I got the GBA version for like $10, and played it for months.

Puzzle Quest is the closest thing I’ve found to digital crack. I can’t put this game down. Go buy it NOW.

And, yeah, Mario Kart DS is sweet sweet candy. SNES Mario Kart is one of my favorite console games of all time, and Mario Kart DS captures the fun in a way that none of the other versions have, IMO.

Phoenix Wright got a big “meh” from me. Do you play adventure games on your PC? If so, you’ll love this. If not, then why do you think you’d want to play them on your DS?

Yoshi’s Island DS - I loved the original SNES Yoshi’s Island, but I just can’t get into the DS version. not sure why. I think maybe my tolerance for platformers has shrunk to about 10 hours total, which is only enough to get about 3 worlds into Yoshi’s Island. On the other hand, 10 hours is enough time to beat Super Mario DS, so if I were to only buy one of these, I’d buy Mario.

Castlevania: DoS - I’d never played a Castlevania game before, so didn’t know what to expect. It was a ton of fun, but then I got to the end and decided I probably didn’t ever need to play another Castlevania game ever again. Go figure.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Sadly, I can’t find the OG Phoenix Wright, but I can find it and Advance Wars on the eBay, soooo…

I’ll be picking up Puzzle Quest next.

How’s the Starfox game? I was hoping to find a copy of Wing Commander out there since I’ve been jonesing for some space dogfighting (eBay again!) but have been stymied locally.

Starfox command? Funny you should ask this, 'cos I just read the following review today. Brendan Lee hates it.

Okay, I’ll bite. What the fuck did that review even say?

…pretentious dickhead bullshit…
