Just got a box thanks to all the positive comments I’ve read on here.
Spent an hour looking at various sites, some are decent, some are total ass. Any opinions on which are the best sites?

No, we are not.
Xbox modding circa 2003 was a different beast than Xbox 360 modding in that it allowed you to do amazing things with your Xbox that weren’t blatantly illegal and wrong, such as running XBMC. Xbox 360 modding only allows you to pirate games, which (tough economic times or not) is not something you’ll find much support for here.
In these “tough economic times”… rent or buy bargain bin games.
You can fix 90% of the RROD by opening up your 360 and adding 1-2 pieces of plastic in there.
In the process voiding your 3 year warranty (assuming, of course, that is still active for you) if you happen to be one of the 10% for whom that doesn’t fix it? Doesn’t sound like a great idea. But in any case, I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the sort of modding he was talking about.
I’m not sure if this is what you mean by ‘modding’ but some of those custom Xbox’s are pretty cool looking.
Lifehacker.com has some excellent modding articles. Look those up. If you don’t have a Action Replay for the Xbox (to softmod it) I’m looking to sell mine.
I hack my console when there is a reason to do so, and piracy doesn’t count. The xbox gave you all kinds of awesome homebrew titles and a great game launcher that played everything off the HD faster. The PS2 eventually could also launch off the HD and benefit from the speed bump, but the homebrew scene kinda sucked. Still, faster launch times = hacked console in my world.
MS finally eliminated any desire I had to hack the 360 when they let you rip titles to the HD and Sony caches everything on the PS3 HD anyways. Add in Linux for the PS3 and XNA for the 360 and the big question is if not for piracy, then why?
Oh yeah, and the Wii. The Wiimote works with PC bluetooth I believe, so screw that.

XBMC does web video, DVD rips, and other legal (or at least not morally wrong) things.
And you can used a modded console to play backups of games you own!
And you can buy Playboy just for the articles!
And you can use forums for something besides trolling.
Why is pointing out the contrast between the piracy of games vs music and movies considered trolling?
Because use of XBMC doesn’t necessarily mean you’re pirating movies. There are plenty of legit uses for the software. Extending functionality ≠ piracy
XBMC does really have enough legit uses to merit modding for. ESPECIALLY if you still use a SDTV.
Not to get bogged down in technicalities, but ripping a DVD is no more legal than pirating a game.
Only if you intend to distribute it illegally. Creating backups of your movies incase the disc is broken is fine as long as you can prove that you own the ripped copy in question (such as retaining both the broken disc, the case, or a receipt of purchase).
