Xbox Series X - The next Xbox that's boxy but sexy xXx

Xbox has been making lots of changes during the last year to encourage people to use the power saving mode for the good of the environment, instead of sleep mode. Including really speeding up how quickly it comes on from completely dead. It’s so fast in power saving mode now. They even sped up the Xbox boot up sound and logo so that wouldn’t delay the boot up.

On the other hand, I don’t charge anything using my Xbox, so I have no experience with that.

Sorry, when I said three things, I meant the screen that says turn off, turn off controller, or restart console.

(I wasn’t at home earlier, so I actually forgot what options were actually on that screen… I just know the left option is what I pretty much always use.)

So yeah, “turn off” is what you want, and it should power the USB plugs.

If those plugs aren’t powered, it may be a hardware problem, because they should be.

If he’s still looking, here’s another deal listed.

$470 for a Series X on Ebay, either with Diablo IV or with Forza Horizon 5 Premium edition.

Now adorably all digital!

What’s being removed to make this one all digital? Does the current one have DVD drive? Bluray?

4K BluRay

Well, finally bit the bullet on getting my Series X serviced. I think I was annoyed that I’d have to buy a box and packing material and send it off via UPS (yeah, that’s right, MS doesn’t send you a box), but then I discovered that MS has an option to get in-store service. I thought, “But wait, MS shut down all their stores, otherwise I would have gone to University Village ages ago”, except in this case there are a number of Best Buy stores nationwide that offer service. And of the two in the Seattle area, one is like a mile from my house.

So, appointment made for service tomorrow. Although I suspect it’s just a drop-off for Microsoft, it still saves me the hassle of figuring out how to safely pack my Series X for shipping.

I have used the drive a total of zero times. I don’t regret at all buying the digital PS5. If they had a digital Series X for cheaper I would have gotten that. Heck when I got to Target the shelves are bare 99.99 of the time. With how fast download speeds are it’s just totally pointless unless you have a gigantic stack of old games you want to play.

Plus the second hand market right? I seem to remember that’s a big thing for consoles.

Incidentally, is this kind of leaking just par for the course now?

It’s why companies try to settle legal issues instead of secrets going to discovery.

No, not everyone is outlining the next decade of their strategy all in one easy to leak file for the FTC.

The extra space makes a lot of sense, so long as they continue selling the old model with the BR drive. Which they won’t, which will ignite a firestorm.

Someone on Twitter pointed out there’s no mention of the Halo franchise anywhere in the leaks. I haven’t looked closely at any of these articles yet, anyone got a sense of whether that absence is conspicuous or meaningless?

It’s no secret Halo has vastly underwhelmed and underperformed. MS cleaned 343’s house and I imagine the franchise is going to get a big rest and reset further down the line.

My tips for Microsoft.

  1. No more goddamn cliffhangers. The wait them between games is measured in presidential terms, and Halo’s disjointed and confusing lore has resulted in absolutely little continuity between the games anyway.

  2. Speaking of which, fix your goddamn lore problem. There are hours-long videos on YouTube that explain in detail how 343 retconned Bungie’s original intent (humans are the Forerunners), and that just caused so many goddamn issues.

  3. You don’t need Master Chief. It’s like Star Wars these days. Everything revolving around the same characters over and over again.

Keep in mind as well that while the cylindrical Xbox is new info, a lot of the game release schedule stuff that just leaked come from 2020 internal presentations, so a lot of it has already changed.

Agreed with all that. And obviously this document was not intended for the public at all, but having not dug into it myself, I’m not sure exactly what the intent was.

Like, if this had been ann internal document for shareholders that leaked, even with everything you said about resetting the franchise, I’d expect something in there to set shareholders’ minds at ease. Just a penciled in new Halo for the planned 2028 next gen console at a minimum.

But I realize that’s not what was leaked, and if all that is immaterial to whatever they’re trying to show the FTC, leaving that out makes more sense. I think the games I saw mentioned were all Bethesda titles so maybe that’s all this is—some point about their plans for one specific studio they previously acquired.

Not previously, that was before MS bought Zenimax. I’d pencil all that stuff into “maybe coming, eventually, maybe not”. Which is a pity because Oblivion and Fallout 3 would definitely benefit from a full remaster. Morrowind too, much more so, but that probably deserves a remake.

Man, i don’t really know what a Halo is - i’m a new Xbox player this generation. I liked the skirmish Halo game, but it feels a million years old. 4 v 4? Tiny maps? That’s like Unreal Tournament era stuff. I got online a few times, got creamed aside from a couple of matches with vs, presumably, grandmothers being forced to play by their grandkids, got bored, moved on. What it did, it did very well. Do I want to play what it did well? No.

But man, i’m too old and busted for the campaign. It was just so silly and so weirdly off tone. It was like Serious Music Plays… for 13 year olds or something. Maybe it was good, but it was most definitely Not for Me (which is fine! I accept more and more games are just aiming too young for me to care to play).

But Game Pass more than makes up for it - there are a ton of strategy games now on Xbox, and that feels like the direction they need to keep going.

The beauty of game pass, much like streaming music and media services, is it allows you to discover new genres, completely free. You can sample whatever strikes your fancy. It’s pretty neat.

That said I haven’t done that, because I know the genres I enjoy already, but my nephews are playing all kinds of wild crazy games, tons of indies too, and that’s cool.
