I’m glad your controller warranty experiences have been good. Mine have not. I got my son the Mando controller for Christmas. After registering it to my account - a miserable process for those of us with poor eyesight - Support insisted it wasn’t registered and demanded that I register it first.
I ended up returning it and getting a replacement from the Microsoft Store where I bought it, which certainly cost Microsoft a lot more money.

That’s weird, when I made the claim with my controller, all i had to do was enter the serial number, and Microsoft knew how old it was (based on the first time it was used, i suspect) and even the last time it was used. I never had to specifically register it or anything (although i ended up doing so later, to cancel the support request more easily).

Today I got my first crash with the Serie X. Slime Rancher hardlocked the console, then I tried to close it, then the console shutdown itself. I manually restarted it.
I have seen similar crash on Xbox One S, but you usually can kill the task, os is a “crash to desktop” and not a shutdown like this.
I had to factory reset - keeping all my games and apps - on both my Series X consoles in the last 24 hours. Whatever patch they were trying to apply didn’t go well. Fortunately the process takes less than 10 minutes with the mobile app prodding things along.
I broke down and bought CONTROL Ultimate via the sale today. I know it’s on GP, and I’ll have to start over (wtf is that), but I was only halfway through, and I wanted the RTX sexyness. Sue me.
In the sale I also picked up Don’t Starve Together and a neat looking indie game called ADIOS Amigos, which seems to be some sort of procedurally-generated, physics-based, co-op, 2d, hand-drawn space thing. That’s a lot of hyphens, and a lot of commas. I was looking for some couch co-op stuff to potentially play with my gal, and they were like $3 each. We’ll see.
Isn’t Don’t Starve on Game Pass? I played it a couple months back I think.
Yeah, the basic version (with maybe the Giants expansion?) is or was on GP. But Together is a separate thing.

Sounds like the XSX is running at 1440p, upscaled to 4k, with ray tracing at 30fps (or no ray tracing at 60fps).
Not sure I’d bother paying for the game just for that, but let us know how it is.
Digital Foundry go into detail on Control.
I’ll certainly post my impressions, but I’m in the middle of Greedfall, and I want to see how it wraps up. Probably in a week or two.

I just could not get into greedfall. I liked the idea of the world and everything, but the basic movement and controls in the game just felt ultra clunky and I couldn’t get past them.
The controls are a bit clunky and sluggish at first. But then you level up a bit, and unlock some combat double-dash abilities, and things are a bit easier. I put some impressions in the greedfall thread, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. I put it as ‘better than Dragon Age 2, worse than The Witcher 2’ on the BioWare-scale.

Maybe at some point I’ll go back to it… like I said, I liked the world of the game and the idea behind it. I just couldn’t get past the movement and how it felt.
And The Medium now serves as an example of the XSS absolutely not being “same as XSX, but 1080p” in a game that’s not a cross gen title.
I won’t keep going back to this topic with every new title that fails to live up to the fantasy of the XSS matching the XSX in all but resolution, and I’m not making any kind of argument against stusser—his contention is the XSS would be a failure if this happened, not a claim that it would never happen, I just thought it was worth pointing it out now since it’s in a next-gen, Xbox exclusive. No excuses about compromises for other platforms or generations.
Don’t worry, if you don’t someone else will.

Yes, and given those examples, I would indeed call the XSS a failed product. I would never consider buying one, and wouldn’t tell my friends to get one even if they had a 1080p TV.
It does? How does it run on the S?

It is literally under 720p on XSS, and ray-tracing is turned off. At 30fps.
The Medium is a pretty uniquely poorly optimized game, though, admittedly. It runs at sub-1080p on XSX (also 30fps), and even a high-end gaming PC with a RTX3090 struggles to maintain 60fps at 1080p. Also it has severe frame pacing issues so it feels like shit to play.
The Medium may not be the best example because of those major issues, but it’s very clear that the XSS is not “An XSX, but at 1080p”. And that makes it a failure in my eyes.
Control Ultimate Edition seems to only offer one mode under S at 900P while offering Performance or Ray tracing modes on X. So another example of the game not simply being the same visually at a lower res. Ray tracing might end up being an X only feature for a bunch of games. Probably not the biggest development impact resource wise though as a performance/ray tracing mode option select seems to becoming the standard on PS5/Series X.
