When I saw the link I thought it was going to be set up like a sneaky speaker system or something.
Disappointed nothing will be getting the X1 “X enhanced” upgrades on the series S. I was looking forward to that. I’m back to being undecided which to buy.
So Microsoft did have a ‘virtual press briefing’ recorded that I assume was what we were hearing about to be shown back in August. The waiting and subsequent leaks blew that up. The video has been leaked now too.

I was just being snarky since people poo pooed all of that when I brought it up before. It’s obvious that supporting two base consoles at once is going to be a pita for developers and something they prefer not to do.
The developers support multiple target platforms for every game that’s not a single console exclusive (multi platform, pc version, …). They will somehow find it within themselves to manage 2 target Xboxes (well defined specs as opposed to supporting PC, for instance) along with the rest just fine.
Wow. They’re lucky Brad Sams leaked the info. That infomercial is awful.

Per microsoft they will be the first console to have Dolby Vision for gaming.

That wasn’t ever meant for public consumption. It was just for the press.

I think almost everyone here on this forum would probably be better of with the SX instead of the SS. Really seems the point of the SS is to be more accessible and allow people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to use Game Pass to have a way to play for cheaper.

The XSX is a better device, obviously everybody would prefer it. This is a price play.
AT the end of the day I"m still primarily a PC gamer, but I enjoy my XB1X for console exclusive game pass games and some light couch gaming that works better on my couch (where framerate isn’t as important). I only bought my XB1X because it was $299 at the time.
I can easily justify $299 for a next gen XBSS upgrade, it’s a lot harder for me to justify $499 for another console though, especially since I’ll just be playing Xb1 games for the forseeable future (as will we all), especially when that $200 I’m saving by not buying an XBSX can go towards an RTX 3070.
If you’ve already got an XboneX, I wouldn’t buy either of them for quite some time.
I mostly agree. I wouldn’t buy the Series S to replace a One X either. Save money for now and get a Series X when current gen support drops away in a year or two.
Meh I’ve already got Amazon paying me $175 for my X1X, so the XBSS is only costing me $125 for faster loading times. I’ve spent much more money for less marginal benefit in my gaming habits.

I wish they had managed to squeeze in a bit more memory to the Series S. You can scale resolution and various graphic settings to make almost any game work on a slower GPU. And on a TV across the room you may not eve notice. But if you can’t fit the game in memory, you gotta do the work and in some cases it might be a lot of work. It might be a challenge to port Flight Sim 2020 to the Series S.
That said, if they are $200 cheaper than everything else and a year later they can drop the price to $250 or even $199… that’s probably all the matters.

I feel like a lot of kids are going to get the cheap one for Christmas.
Man, with how mad MS was about the Xbone abbreviation, you’d think they would have been more careful than to announce the Xbox “SS” in 2020.
Microsoft’s naming conventions have been…interesting choices. I understand why they didn’t name the 360 the Xbox 2 since it was competing with the PS3, but yikes. It feels like way more of an afterthought than it should be and I am left wondering what a refresh of the Series X will be down the road .
Because my brain is apparently stuck in the '80s, I’m reminded of a columnist complaining about Atari’s choices for names with the ST line especially with peripherals. Yes, as an ST fanboy, I still remember that the single-sided disk drive was the SF354 while the double-sided drive was the SF314. Because why wouldn’t they be called those easy-to-remember and distinguish monikers. I guess that was a forerunner of graphics card naming conventions too.

Xbox S seems nicer, but it’s hard for a tech nerd like me to be content stepping down to a less powerful console. If it had 4k blu ray support it would seem to be the no-brainer option, but otherwise it’s not really the all-in-one entertainment console. I do vastly prefer it’s aesthetics though and the Xbox X just looks by comparison, frankly, like a PC tower. I like smaller, less conspicuous tech. It does make you feel like you’re picking the more “responsible” choice, especially when most of my console gaming at this point is probably not going to be AAA games.

The other annoying thing for me is having to keep the Xbox One around too. Indications are that the new consoles are not going to have the OneGuide to watch Live TV with 30 minutes pause time.
It wasn’t that big a deal on my current 1080p TV. That one has 6 HDMI inputs I can flip between. Currently: PS4, XB1, X360, Chromecast, AppleTV, Open slot. But the 4K TV I’m getting soon will only have 3 HDMI inputs. So I’m thinking AppleTV, XSX, and XB1? So then what do I do with the PS4? Maybe I could take it upstairs and use it with my computer monitor. I’m not sure. And without the Chromecast, I guess we can’t just cast stuff onto the TV from our phones anymore. That’s going to suck. I know the Xbox One has that ability to, but you have to first start a certain program within XB1, then your phone can see. So it’s a pain compared to the Chromecast. And obviously the AppleTV doesn’t support casting from Android phones.
You can add an HDMI switcher to one of the TV HDMI ports and have as many devices as you want!
