Thing is, I always save those for the final battle. Why waste them on trash?

Yep, always did the same myself and the challenge of getting thru the earlier stuff w/o them made the final battle easier as a reward for doing it.

So in that sense changing it made the final engagement easier.

Anyone else annoyed at today’s update? The new log in screen. The fact that mods are no longer WOTC at the top and XCOM 2 at the bottom. Extra clicks. I hate extra clicks.

Just beat the game on Commander my first time! I immediately fired it up again to attempt an Ironman run. Included all the story DLC this time. We’ll see how it goes.

If it goes like most ironmans you’ll be back in a day or two filling up a post with a rant on how the file got corrupted mid campaign.

Play “HonestMan” instead-- that way if your save gets corrupted you can reload.

GameSave Manager has a feature where it will backup your saved game files every 5 minutes while you are playing. You can set it to keep all or limit it from 1-20 copies. Great for games with high risk saving like XCOM or those that require Ironman for achievements like Stellaris.

Nice!

Folks, I’m about to start this with WotC (all for the first time). Which DLC should I enable/disable?

  • Anarchy’s Children
  • Alien Hunters
  • Shen’s Last Gift

So far, I’m looking to disable the first two and keep Shen’s Last Gift, which, from what I’ve read is the best of the bunch.

I don’t know about the first one. But you should do Alien Hunters and Shen at least once.

Anarchy and alien are both cosmetics, right? I don’t see why you’d disable either. Options man, you need options so you can look your best, always!

Anarchy’s Children is cosmetic, but Alien Hunters is definitely not and sounds like it’s made for masochists. YMMV.

I would strongly recommend against Alien Hunters for a first playthrough.

I don’t foresee myself playing through it again (it’s rare I replay anything). That’s why I thought I’d swing by here and do a quick check.

Ok, then turn them all on, but also look-up a guide or 2 on how to deal with the aliens. In my opinion, they were more difficult to deal with then the Chosen, but you did get some really nice items beating them.

War of the Chosen changes what those DLCs do. They are integrated into the larger game differently.

Yeah, what I’ve done is enabled them all but disabled the integration in order to enable the story/narrative missions. This has not been simple to ‘just start’!

Speaking of integration v. non-integration, what is the benefit of integrating Shen’s Last Gift? And can I do that while disabling Alien Hunters entirely (do I have to do the latter outside of the game in the Steam properties, BTW?)?

I don’t know exactly the nature of the integration, but I think that integration gets rid of the story/narrative mission(s) but keeps the content in the game somehow. In order to integrate Shen’s Last Gift without Alien Hunters you’d have to uninstall/disable the Alien Hunters outside the game. That’s my understanding of it anyway!

XCOM is a bit like Civ. It’s meant to be replayed, and you should not expect to win your first few games.
