Well, I guess the world needs masochists too. :-)
Finished my first WOTC game, on Veteran or whatever the basic difficulty is. Contrary to my perceptions, it says I landed 86% of my shots. Heh. Sure didn’t feel that way!
I found the end mission underwhelming, but then, my team was all blinged out by then. Now I wonder if going back and trying the preceding game (XCOM) would be worth it or not. Not sure I would be up for another round of WOTC; doesn’t seem to be a lot of variation really, except upping the difficulty level. Some weapon/skill combos are so good, it seems like I’d never want to try anything else.
If you enjoyed this one, and I did, in fact this thread firing back up recently has me starting yet another campaign, I just enjoy the missions that much. The strategic in all of these has always left me meh.
Anyway, if you had fun with this one then I’d definitely think at least one run thru of the 1st one is worth while and should be a good time as well.
If you are looking to play more of the same but just are tired of the enemies and/or weapons there are plenty of reasonably balanced mods that add new stuff.
Probably the wrong thread for this, but XCOM 2 is coming to the iPad. Given how great it was playing XCOM enemy unknown on the iPad I am very stoked for that. Playing XCOM 2 in bed? Yes please!
Pretty sure every number on those final screens is wrong. Sadly.
Well, that would not surprise me!
Citation needed. Between a human and a computer, I’m betting on the computer’s record-keeping and math skills, in the absence of extraordinary evidence to do otherwise.
Especially since Xcom lies about odds in the player’s favor and players invariably still think Xcom is lying the other way. Humans don’t have a great track record here…
This is amazing news. I’m 100% convinced that touch is the best interface for XCOM games.
So am I! Enemy unknown was awesome on the iPad. I already preordered :)
Will the ipad support mods, and will the expansion(s) be included? I never got WOTC, but it seems mighty tempting to have a good ipad game.
All expansions included. Mods likely not.

That’s not the problem, the problem is that it can happen that data is either not logged or parsed correctly. Think of all the games that had broken achievements, it’s quite similar.
I’m not saying that Xcom is lying or not lying, but I have played a few games back in the day that had similar issues.
A Tactical Legacy Pack question: “save one XCOM operative” objective?
I was playing a mission this weekend in which one of the objectives was to “save at least one XCOM operative” or something to that effect, but all I saw was a bunch of civilians standing around who didn’t particularly respond to my guys when they’d walk up to them (unlike in a terror mission). I remember it was the mission where the DJ went back to get his records. Presumably they were talking about XCOM agents who weren’t the ones in the party I brought with me, right? I never saw the box get checked.
BTW, for one of those troops who is some kind of Psi person, is the only way to get focus to pick it up when dropped by enemies?

That’s a mod, right? That sounds weird.
Well, I may have a mod or two installed that could be affecting the normal behavior of the Tactical Legacy Pack, I suppose, but the TLP is official Firaxis content, supposedly covering how Bradford and Co. brought XCOM back from the ashes after the canonical defeat of the first XCOM. It has no strategic layer at all. You get pre-rolled soldiers and do the missions.
It’s been a while since I played this, but I think it means one x com soldier has to survive. The dj missions were a pain in the ass if I remember right, lots of those four legged creatures that insta kill if they get close
After finishing WOTC I decided to try the Long War mod of Enemy Within. Hoo boy, is this hard. I mean, you start with six troopers instead of four per mission, but they still get one-shotted by plasma pistol sectoids, your troops can’t hit the broad side of a UFO, and the game pretty much forces you into losing a bunch of missions or even nations early on. Ouchies. OTOH, there’s a TON of cool stuff in the mod.
I’m playing on the lowest (recommended) difficulty, but maybe I should use the Second Wave options and enable the plus to accuracy for my troopers. That might make it almost bearable.
I guess that must be it. Weirdly, that box never gets checked off, though. I watched a Let’s Play of the mission and you’d think that once the first XCOM person went up to the helicopter it should have gotten checked off, but it never did.

I really liked that mod. The xcom people should take some of the mechanics from it for their next game. I am mostly thinking of fact that missions are not instant, and you have days or weeks to respond to them and then you deploy squads who spend time preparing to lower the difficulty.
I also like the fact that psi ops do not just cook inside their training room forever, but go out into the field, get xp per normal and then go to the training chamber for just a few days to learn a new skill.
The only problem they did not solve is the fact that rookies or low level soldiers are useless past the early part of the game. Basically they should always have easy missions available so that you can level up fresh troops.
