wethereyetwhethereyet are we the fuck there yet? whetereyet?

I think there’s still 24 hours left in the US…

At this point we are less than 22 hours from XCom. It’s supposed to go live at midnight Eastern.

I believe its 10pm PST/1am EST from what I’ve read and what Steam shows.

Oh? I was sure it was on the 10th it was to release?

Thats pretty cool! Has anyone looked into how the Multiplayer works? I’ve tried to stay a bit blind on the whole of the game to be surprised, but I’m curious since someone asked if I wanted to play some MP at some point.

22 hours from now it’ll be 12:28 AM, October 10!

I’m really, really glad I made up a bunch of reasons in my head to take this week off for vacation!

Maybe in some parts of the world. Not in the US, though. It’ll either be the 8th or the 9th depending on what side of midnight you are on. ;-)

It’s unlocking at 12:00am EST on October 9th, so us Westcoasters get it at 9:00pm on the 8th.

It should be that you have to wait 3 additional hours longer than the Eastcoasters.

:p

There seems to be some discrepancies about when Steam will release the game. 2K says its unlocking at midnight EST, but Steam’s countdown still says 1am EST. Either way I’ll live. ;-)

Yeah, considering some of us have to wait another 48 hours on top!

Before the release, let’s take a moment of silent to remember OTHER great turn based games, most notable Jagged Alliance and Silent Storm. I remember QT3 was pretty jazz up over Silent Storm!

Oh, w00t! My XCOM preload completes!

Not on my end - Steam shows Midnight EST when I look at it. It’s rounding the hours, so to get the most accurate time check at the top of the hour. It says 17 hours right now.

You’re all bastards. It unlocks on the 12th here.

Snap,

Still hoping I can finish Borderlands 2 by then

oh wow - RPS really likes the game.

It works. It better than works. XCOM is muscular, tense, thoughtful, mutable turn-based strategy with the dramatic, explosive presentation of a contemporary all-action game. Also, the environments get unavoidably trashed on a grand-scale, in a fashion all too rarely seen in either strategy or action games: these are true battlegrounds. No matter how well you do in a mission, you’ll leave a bombsite behind you. Frankly, you’re probably doing more harm than good to the world.

Edit: Worst part of the article is this:

Scenery destruction depends somewhat on the gun used. The entry-level, bullet-based weapons don’t do much damage to non-organic matter, but by the time you’re up to plasma weapons you can expect to see rocks and walls disintegrate. However, there is no free aim for weapons other than rocket launchers and grenades, so you cannot deliberately target specific parts of the environment in the hope of making a sheltering enemy more visible. As such, scenery destruction happens only when a shot misses, and even then only occasion. This does frustrate me, as I’d love to, say, have a Heavy remove a section of wall to open up a clear line of sight for a Sniper ally. I suspect free-aim will be the most called-for mod/patch, and I hope someone makes it happen. Between your guys and the aliens, however, rest assured that every mission will see loads of devastation.

Thats a big big bummer!

Free Aim was actually in for a really long time in the games development, but they had to scrap it as it had a number of negative side effects. The ones I recall are 1) WAAAAY Over Powered. 2) Negated the use of cover. 3) Became the only real way to play (fewer options). 4) Reduced the impact of explosives such as rockets and grenades. Stuff like that. It’s a case of “Game and Balance” over “Realism”

Not to say we won’t get a mod for it at some point, but I doubt we’ll ever see an official patch or anything.

Hmm, well - it WAS a good way to play in the original, but I guess its not that big a deal if RPS loves it this much still :-)

No one put the reviews, apart from RPS?

Well, let’s go then

Silent storm was really good. I even liked the steampunk angle mid game.

It is too bad other games didn’t do the same (amazing) thing with environment destruction that silent storm did. I doubt xcom will either sadly, but who knows.

Silent storm does kind of disprove the bullshit theory that “if you can destroy cover, it makes cover useless” as well.
