I’ve run into a minor bug with the new patch; squaddie ends turn at the base of a ladder and the next turn the game draws him at the top of the ladder. But he’s not technically on top, because if you move him he warps back down to the ground.

That’s right. To be honest, I would have been more tempted by new customization options than I was by Slingshot.

Did they ever end up fixing the semi frequent getting stuck on a soldier and not being able to do anything? If you were lucky, you could reload or change weapons to break out of it, but half the time you needed to alt f4.

I’ve never experienced this bug or read about it on the 2k forums. It sounds like you have a double tap sniper with a second shot to take. In this position you cannot move, reload, overwatch, or hunker down, which are the usual means of ending a turn. If this is the problem you’re encountering, hit backspace to end your squad’s turn.

True. When you know your seed has an excessively high requirement for a hit, it can be fun to make the aliens take it. Run a guy out into the open and watch the next alien shot miss. Or run up and tap an ethereal on the shoulder and watch his mind control fail. Or have a soldier who is going to miss take it, so you can have a more moderate roll to work with. Bullet Storm is good for this situation. Bullet Storm: Discard one die roll at the cost of an action.

Yeah, I’ve been waiting for at least 50% off to get it. I want to play through the three new maps, but I’m not sure I want to be locked into playing them every time I do a new playthrough.

Of course I haven’t yet been tempted to do a second playthrough so it’s moot at this point.

I am a huge fan of the original X-COM, and even the brutal TFTD. I also really liked the new XCOM.

Started playing again with the Second Wave options on “Classic”, and a few of these just make the game so punishingly hard it quickly becomes unwinnable.

I had one of the Slingshot missions last night which forces you to move very quickly. I had my best soldiers. Let’s just say there are many parallel universes in which the aliens win.

I still had a few bugs where a soldier with 100% to-hit would miss. I definitely experienced some of the “teleporting aliens” situations, though they didn’t teleport into the middle of my squad (didn’t matter, they still slaughtered me).

I wish there was a way to have the game tweak the difficulty for me as it progressed - the game (with and without options) is punishingly hard for the first bits and then becomes trivial. Any mods that do that?

Basically, it would be your turn, you’d select a soldier (any class) and then the game would keep going but you’d be unable to click any button or use any command.

There are two versions of this situation

key commands still work. If you get this one and you can switch weapons or reload weapons on the active soldier (you can’t switch active soldier), it will fix it. Otherwise you can reload the game. I think you could just save and reload too but i’m not sure if the bug would carry over.
key commands don’t work. in this case you’re SCREWED. you need to alt-4.

This was talked about on release and was not uncommon (although not so common it made the game unplayable). I’m not sure if it was ever fixed, but it stayed unfixed for the whole time i played through xcom.

#1 was more common than #2.

By itself it is just very annoying, but once you get the bug where the game no longer orders your saves by date, it becomes increasingly hard to find the right save game to load after your input freezes.

Try the War Weariness second wave option maybe?

Well it popped up in my Steam client as “New DLC”. The fact that it’s not really all that new doesn’t change the ridiculousness of charging $5 for a single additional soldier and a couple of armor skins. It’s still horse armor.

Who is playing this multiplayer?

My brother kicked my ass 4 games to nothing the other night. I need to practice and destroy him. It’s like chess. Except way more complicated. What do all the terms mean in multiplayer? What’s a good loadout? It’s incredibly hard to figure out what everything means. We usually play 10000 point games. He’s beat me on Railroad, Police Station, Bar, and Police Station again. He loves Sectoid Commanders as they allow you to mind control. Which bascially takes a guy out of the game. Is there a good, cheap counter to this? Who is playing this multiplayer?

I had to ragequit on my own flesh and blood brother the other night. 4 to nothing! I am the X-Com Man! I love this series! Help me redeem myself.

Anyone want to help me practice? Be my weird kid in the arcade that helps Homer get really good at video boxing and beat Bart finally.

My usual squad is a few laser snipers, a heavy with rockets and laser heavy gun, and then maybe another assault guy with a plasma or two of those guys, and an 800 point guy that’s just a scout.

Who is good at this? Help me get better.

There was a long period where I had no interest in playing XCOM . . . now I started a new game and I’m hooked anew. Also, I quite enjoyed the Slingshot missions, which add much-needed variety and purpose to random encounters that pretty much make up the game. I was hoping for more out of the RPC though, like a unique XP tree.

Giaddon is correct. X-COM: UFO Defense has never been sold by GOG.com. But GamersGate has it for sale.
