I think I may have asked this at some point earlier in the thread, but has there been any news at all regarding expansions or more DLC for Enemy Unknown? The one game that I would love to buy more content for and there hasn’t been anything since the first DLC mission.
It would be especially nice to get more maps.
Now I’m missing with 98% fucking hit chance!
I like this game!
Last I heard they had acknowledged the criticisms of the first DLC and were working on a new one that fans would like, but honestly I can’t even remember where I read that now.
They teased something at Pax, iirc. It’s due out later this year, but nobody is saying when.
That’s unfortunate, because I read that it had been fixed on the 2K forums at least two months ago. I’ll have to look into again. The TB ruins the game for me and has squashed several of my second wave attempts. I really don’t want to even bother until it’s fixed.

What’s worse is that the game saves the attempt permanently, so even if you save-scum and reload, the same result will occur forever. I wish they wouldn’t do that, or leave that for more hardcore modes.
Yeah, I learned that the hard way.
Some other strange things I noticed:
E
--
-+ +--
A B
In this situation - seen from above, B could shoot E, while A could not shoot E because “no target in sight”. What gives?
Then I had another situation: Sniper on a roof at the border, enemy below at least two squares away from the building. My sniper could not “see” him.
There are some very weird things with line of sight in this game…
If you’re depicting that correctly, A and B have slightly different situations, because E is next to the right corner, not the left corner. All figures next to a corner are considered to be peeking around the corner, which means they’re effectively in the open, adjacent square for LOS purposes.
Vertical LOS is more finicky, and works both ways. I’ve had an alien on the roof above me, and I had to be significantly away from the wall before we could see each other. 2 squares isn’t enough, I think it had to be 3-4. That doesn’t bother me.
The only time I’ve run into something really inexplicable and annoying is when a soldier and an alien are at the same corner. Theoretically it should treat soldier -> alien as exposed, and alien -> soldier as exposed, due to the peeking rules, but in practice sometimes it only goes one way. That is, my soldier is exposed, and the alien gets full cover. Since it’s a nasty situation anyway, I avoid head-to-head confrontations at corners.
In reality, with the situation depicted above by me, A would rather see E than B would by peeking around the corner. In game it was completely reversed. There is no logical explanation why A can’t see E when peeking around the corner, especially when you consider that B can.
I should add that the barrier in front of E was only a low height cover, not a 2 meter wall or something!

Well, I can see why B (and not A) would see E easier, due to the angle (though it makes no sense on low height cover anyways), but you’re logic is correct in that E should have an easier time shooting A over B. They would be more exposed.
That situation makes perfect sense to me. B can lean out of cover and shoot, and get a good shot becuase the alien is in his side. A would have to shoot through the cover, not around it, to ht the alien. In other words, B can “directly” see the alien around the corner, while the cover is concealing the alien from A. Make sense?
No, because in every other instance, low height cover provides (partial) cover but does not block line of sight. So both A and B should see E when they peek around the corner, A should even see E earlier (in the real world) because of the angle.
I should provide a 3D image, I think then this whole thing would be instantly clear to everyone…
Should I attack the alien base as soon as possible? Or is it better to wait and develop my base more because destroying the base triggers stronger aliens in the future or something? Is there some kind of hidden time limit on these things?
Unlike the old XCom, I think (slight spoilers) there is only one base. So go at it when you are ready, not when it first appears.
I’ve only played this for a couple of days, but from what I’ve read elsewhere the aliens become harder as you research and level up, and if that’s true, there might not be much point in waiting, especially since taking the base gives you some benefits that are really needed early on.
Wait until you hit a month where there are more countries at level-five panic than you have satellites to launch (before the end of the month). Completing the base mission drops panic levels in all countries by two, so it’s an effective tool to keep all countries funding XCOM as you ramp up satellite production.
If I remember right, it’s more a function of time than it is what you, the player, are doing. The aliens are doing their own research and production behind the scenes, independent of what the player is accomplishing.
Yes, the base does get harder as time goes on. However, you still need to be reasonably ready. Going in with conventional weapons is a near-guaranteed wipe. At a minimum, you need to be able to handle packs of Chrysallids without casualties - and remember that you won’t have any civilians around to distract them, as with terror missions.
There’s definitely some point to using the base mission to defuse panic levels. As Savillo said, it decreases panic globally. Uh, if you win. I’ve wiped out because I went in to early. It’s not end of the game, you can try again any time you like, but it’s bad for panic.

I’ve read that if you have lasers and carapace armor you are all set, especially at the end of the month and, like others stated, you need to reduce a lot of panic around the globe. I’m just tackling it now, and although it’s tough, it’s also very doable.
