It’s a bug. I keep having this randomly happen with American, Spanish, Russian, and German characters. At first I thought it was just the tutorial but it’s not. Then I thought maybe they just tagged the characters wrong for voices, but it’s not consistent (for me). I did a full wipe of all the extra directories too.
And all of the obvious problems with an enemy appearing from an unexpected (and what should have been impossible) direction, such as catching some soldiers in an isolated position, catching them without cover, catching them bunched up (and vulnerable to grenades), etc.
I’ve seen the bug ~3 times in one game (not counting the first instance where I reloaded ~10x because I was trying to test/understand the phenomenon). The worst part is that the teleported aliens don’t always trigger overwatch, even if they’re appearing in an exposed position well within your squad’s LoS.

I’m not sure what’s going on but when my guys are in overwatch they don’t always shoot at the aliens when they come right into view. I had one walk 8 spaces right in front of my guy and he just stood there. He hadn’t moved the previous turn and overwatch was active as he did shoot at another alien later that turn that crossed the same path. Anyone else had anything similar to this?
Also - Enemy Unknown has all those nice second wave options, but I"m’ only seeing half for Enemy Within. Can anyone confirm that all the second wave option from Enemy Unknown truly are available in Enemy Within?

Do all the applicable second wave options affect the aliens too? Like Damage roulette? They will damage you with much wider ranges…?

Aliens don’t attack during their free move, but you pretty much always reveal them during your turn, meaning they get their turn shortly afterwards, and given that they are basically moving twice, they have a good chance of flanking you. This is especially a problem with the Outsiders. There’s also the problem with council missions and aliens dropping in mid-mission.

It’s not a bug, it’s an option. Why it’s an option I have no idea but it is indeed an option.

I know, I have that option checked and saved. What’s happening is they start out in their native language and then randomly switch to another language. Like my American soldier suddenly started speaking German after he was hit by a Grey’s blast.

I guess I lucked out because I haven’t experienced any of the problems you guys are describing. For me it has just been this totally amped up experience of the original game, which is basically what I was hoping for…

Man, you’ve almost sold me on the expansion with a sentence like that. I’ve somehow put 243 hours into the base game (take that, Dishonored! (228)), but I’m always itching for more tactical goodness.

Can someone refresh my memory, do Chrystlids get some kind of defense bonus for getting into melee range with squaddies? As I just had a mission where two crystalids took down half my squad as everyone started doing one damage and missing horribly to them. I’ve never seen the attack roulette fluctuate that bad until that one mission.

I don’t think so. Damage roulette can play with your mind when you get a bunch of bad rolls in a row.
I just tried the game at Insane difficult, Ironman, with all second wave options (that I have) checked. I got wiped 5x in a row, never getting past the first mission!

Quick question for those with the expansion, is the Slingshot DLC included?

I really want Steam to integrate a setting where it has to prompt you for downloads bigger than XMB no matter what your autodownload setting.

I thought it was supposed to be, but it doesn’t show up in the options menu.

Put a few hours in.
I love the new maps… for the 8 or so missions I played, I’d say half were new maps. And the two small UFO crashes were both new maps (thank god).
I haven’t played with any of the gene therapy or mech stuff, as I’m totally struggling to get even basic stuff into my base like a new uplink and workshop to make new satellites so I don’t lose a continent after the first month.
The game seems harder now.
And my god do I hate the way the encounter system works. It gets extremely repetitive… send your sprinter forward, trigger a spawn, then run back and put everyone on overwatch.
The addition of the expiring resources just seems to blatantly show how bad this system is. “Hey, everyone is playing the exact same way because that’s the only option we’ve given them… in the expansion, let’s incentivize them to rush forward and trigger three spawns and get their squad wiped completely to really show off how fundamentally broken our game is!”
Is there any other strategy? If I try to maneuver at all I end up triggering multiple spawns which promptly wipes my team.

Yeah, but I checked that when I started the game, and it’s not working. As I said, the Russian is speaking Russian, but the Chinese and South Korean people are speaking English.

Maybe they were educated in the states/England? You can customize each soldier’s spoken language in their customization screen (although maybe they don’t have Asian languages? Haven’t checked).

I think it is integrated into the expansion and not a separate option.
I feel the same way, honestly. The game already had similar missions with the bombs. They just force you to go for broke and send someone willy-nilly across the battlefield. Sometimes that means activating more than one group of xenos.
I’m curious to see how this balances out later.

Yeah, so far it looks like they only have foreign languages for European languages (though not Portuguese). So all the Brazilians speak English.
