Late to the game, just working on first run through. Does anyone else get bothered by having to move inventory between soldiers when you change your roster for a mission or simply because one guy is wounded or busy or I simply want to level up a new guy? Then I have to click on multiples soldier to see who has what and give it to the guys on the mission.
So much of the game is so slick, this bit of tedium sticks out to me. Its like me, as the commander, has to go down to the barracks and yell out “OK, who has the Heavy Laser? Its not in the armory, so I know one of you guys has it stashed in your bunk somewhere!”
There’s a option in the squad window to make all spare equipment available. That way you don’t have to remember who’s got that upgraded armor or weapon, or scroll through your squad members to find it.
Not only this, but if a guy is wounded, he automatically unequips everything and it’s in the general pool. You only really need the “make all items available” button if you’re switching out squad members for experience reasons. Which you probably should anyway.
Now with Enemy Within we’ve got the converse issue - it’s important for the couple of weeks past the alien base assault to make sure your top guys have gear at all times.
I still haven’t gotten Enemy Within (but I will sooner or later), but it seems so strange that that’s how the base assault works. It seems like such a missed opportunity–they should have put weapon lockers around the map and you need to get your guys there to equip them, and so on. But I guess since there isn’t any equipping going on in-mission anywhere else, it would have been a whole new system. Still, seems very unfortunate you have to meta-game like that.
I was reading the 2K forum and saw a YouTube link I found amusing - multiple Sectopods setting each other off with the final death explosion.
@eliandi: Yes, I was similarly baffled by the equipment management tedium in XCom:EU.
Whoa. You mean ‘spare equipment’ as in the equipment that an unassigned soldier may be wearing? So I don’t have to manually go through and unequip Sniper A when I want to bring along Sniper B instead? That would be amazing. I hope I can find this magical button.
It’s at the bottom of the screen, below the second soldier from the left: make items available (RB if you use a controller). Can’t miss it. Unless you haven’t got EW installed offcourse… And it’s very helpfull indeed, but like Gus said: don’t use it right before the base attack!

Ah, that is why I did not see it. I only have EU right now. So I guess they only included in DLC and not base code. Bummer. I will be getting EW, probably at summer sale.
Enemy Within is definitely worth it. In addition to the new material (MECs, Gene Mods, Exalt missions) it revamps some of the original game. That button’s the least of it. I still feel that even with the skill changes that some choices are much better than others, but at least things like Snap Shot are a real option now. Training Roulette is only available with Enemy Within, and I think it keeps the game interesting for a good bit longer.
I’ll second EW as a must-buy, one of the best expansions I’ve seen in years. Particularly in this age of half-assed DLC.

…And i’ll third it. it fixes one of the most annoying things in the game; every soldier speaks amuhrican. EW allows them to speak their native language if the game was ported to that language (russian, french, german, etc.) its awesome.

Gotta say, I love the language thing too. But I really wish they’d actually had languages (or at least accents!) for every nation represented. Just recording three or four more voice sets would have covered it, I think–generic accents recognizable as African, Indian/Middle Eastern, East Asian, and maybe British/Aussie (and yes, I recognize what broad strokes I’m painting with). They could’ve cut back to just one whitebread American voice to partially offset the extra resources. I mean, if there’s one game that should try to be aggressively multi-cultural, it’s XCOM.
I would actually prefer everyone speak accented English. It seems a little odd that soldiers in the same squad would speak different languages.

Just watched the brit dude. Very funny. If only it were real. World of Tanks recently added a British voice pack to their British tanks. It is not as over the top as this but really does add to the game.

It was always made clear that this is a poor man’s solution of the better-than-nothing variety - they said there was no budget to record all lines with TRUE regional accents.
And, to be fair, the number of required lines would really skyrocket, not only would you have to have a variety of “accented” voices for each language, both male and female, you also would have to repeat that with every localized language, as a player running the French version would then have every right to expect their foreigners to speak accented french.
Maybe Firaxis should do the number crunching and then put up a Kickstarter for a localization DLC - if enough folks are willing to shell out the bucks…
For me, non-localized voices didn’t make it to my personal top10 list of XCOM gripes, so I’m not in the market for such DLC.

I’m slightly annoyed that there are no localized Asian voices at all, but I guess it’s still slightly better than having everyone speak American English all of the time.
