Absolutely love X-Com. I started with Terror from the Deep (so I have a perverse appreciation for that one), and I enjoy some of the forward-thinking the Gollops put into their own follow-up in Apocalypse. These are the three games that I always install on a new computer first.

I am enjoying the new version, but it’s very different in the details. I’m keeping an eye on Xenonaunts, too.

Spoiler tags please!

You’re messing with me, right? Heh.

Spoilers man!

spoilerz!

But seriously, how to pass the time for the next 12 days? Really looking forward to digging into the full game.

Waiting three days longer then you americans will be hell. No internet for me between the US release and my installation unlock it looks like.

I tried to play the original XCOM (BTW - I only played TFTD back in the day) a few times over the last couple of years, but I’m not able to handle the long, micro heavy battles any more. I think that the new streamlined game would suit me better these days.

That said, I also pre-ordered Xenonauts a year ago so we’ll see :)

This Interactive Traileris super cool - I highly recommend it. It lets you select a squad complement (such as a diverse group consisting of sniper, assault, heavy, and support vs. two heavies and two assaults) and you make choices during the mission on how to proceed. There is a lot of branching here, and you CAN make the wrong choices and wipe your entire team. It’s kind of fucking brilliant marketing, in my opinion.

I remember seeing that once before in the past, but can’t recall the game that did it.

I’ve definitely seen one from Crysis 3. Is that what you’re thinking of?

Dishonored also has one.

Just played the demo, seems pretty awesome. Reminds me of Full Spectrum Warrior in a turn-based venue with a strategic layer.

No, i thought it was a couple years ago or maybe even earlier. Who knows, maybe too many games have driven me insane.

Edit i was thinking of Orcs must die, which was only about a year ago.

Just played the demo. Certainly captured the classic XCom feel. I know what I’m doing in October.

It made me think back to playing the original demo, which was brutal - not just much harder (I probably wiped four or five times before beating it) but also a million times more difficult to figure out. The interface was incredibly opaque and all there was just a skimpy Readme explaining it. Folks complaining about the UI in the demo for the new game have no idea …

(And it was uphill both ways, too!)

I played the demo, too. As Miley Cyrus might say, “Pretty cool.”

Who would like my free copy of Civ 5?

The way the sniper uses his left arm looks weird. Is that a technique for stabilizing a rifle in real life?

Someone who claimed to have actual military training said it’s not common, but is done when the sniper is in a “retreating” type pattern and pulling out of a hot spot, or engaging from a shorter distance and needs to remain mobile (which is sort of the play style that’s going on here). Something like that.

Wow just played the demo. Really captures the feel of classic xcom and does away with the clunkiness which imo is a big improvement given the lack of gaming time I have lately. Really looking forward to the final product.

It feels close anyway, but i think they lost something on the overhead, strategy part of the game. The tactical seems very nice, but based on the demo and the interactive trailer, it just feels less planned out and more choose your own adventure style. But it still looks good though.

Just 10 more days gentlemen!
