Hey, Tom, not to go too off topic but after reading your review (and your fascination with B-17’s) I thought I’d mention my uncle was a navigator/bombardier in a B-17. He was credited with shooting down several German fighters, was wounded, was shot down over northern Germany and ended up in a POW camp, and was also awarded the Silver Star, Air Medal, and Purple Heart.
Clark Gable was flying with their unit while filming a documentary and captured on film my uncle’s plane being shot down and the crew all parachuting out and was included in a film called “Combat America”. This can be found on YouTube.
My cousin (his daughter) wrote a book about his experiences which is pretty interesting. Lots of crazy stuff there, captured Allied bombers the Germans would use to infiltrate formations, Germans trying to drop bombs on the bombers, flying over with bombs dangling from wires, trying to use other dangling wires to screw up the props, etc.
Anyway, just thought I’d share because of your past interest.
