Anime' - Whatcha Watchin? (Is it good?)

Is the OAV dead?

I’d say its pretty damn close.

Aside from films, this is where you got the more adult-oriented, more violent shows. Samurai X, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, The Guyver, and plenty more examples if I could think of any. Not to say that the ultra-violence necessarily makes things better, but when you’re not constrained with television broadcast standards, more adult themes are available to use.

You just don’t see them made much anymore. I imagine that with the cheap costs of DVDs, its given companies the ability to get the entire series out on disc and not rely on making sales with direct-to-video products.

A couple episodes per tape (or VCD) vs up to 1/5th of the season on one DVD.

It is kind of sad.

Now that Japan has satellite outlets for anime I can imagine that there’s a lot more outlets for television content.

Anyone else bothered by the fact that anime is getting less mature (as in the actual definition of the term) and more intent on selling based on kiddie porn?

I have noticed that just about every anime I’ve watched has a shower scene with a girl (most disturbingly when the girl is supposed to be 15 or thereabouts), no actual show of nudity though. Cosmo Warrior Zero, Full Metal Panic, Witch Hunter Robin.

I don’t see the basis of the kiddy claim. I mean, we used to have Wedding Peach and Sailor Moon and the thousands of knockoffs.

I blame CLAMP and Marmalade Boy.

Turns out the sky is falling.

You won’t find out why until episode 20.

Oh please, the teaser at the end of 19 makes it look like the sky is falling in 20, but you know there will be two episodes of the sky powering up for its big drop, and then a recap episode showing everything leading up to the fall before we get to actually see any action. And then we’ll have a 5 minute montage of the android catgirl who has learned the true meaning of love telling us why in the form of beat poetry.

I blame Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

Yay! They finally got around to subbing episode 4 of Gokusen. Sure it’s live-action comedy-drama, but it’s based on an anime series, so it comes close enough for this thread, right?

No, cuz then you’d have to include Fist of the North Star.

I don’t even include the anime version of FotNS so that doesn’t bother me. ;)

Another live-action series based on anime I’d recommend is You’re Under Arrest!.

So there.

The New Fist of the North Star was good. Plenty of heads blowing up and blood splattering everywhere. Although you just know that no one is a match for Kenshiro anymore, that everyone is already dead the moment you put the disk into the machine.

Just watched “Dead Leaves”

Sure was… something.

Frenetic maybe? Nah, that’s not it…

That’s hilariously awful. In a good way.

Yeah, I just watched that recently too. I’m still not quite sure what to think of it.

Twelve Kingdoms! Again!
Latest two volumes just flew by. Only one remaining now, alas :(

Finishing up on Full Metal Panic. Not too bad, there’s lots variety here. High School hijinks, mecha battles, love, betrayal even a father and son moment all done in true anime form. Except for a few really cheesy parts, it’s not a bad anime.

You should check out the sequel series, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. It’s all hijinks.
