My god, what a depressing list. So glad it’s not my job to cover AAA any more.

This has been me starting 2009 or so, what I consider “The Dark Ages” in gaming, for my tastes. The resurgence of the indie scene on PC saved the hobby for me, I was really questioning if video games were for me anymore. Seeing that list just makes me really glad that non-AAA games made a comeback, because I’m awash in awesome games now.

Minecraft on 360 is the new Mario Kart on DS

Wasn’t Witcher 3 on last month’s list? If so, I’m sad it dropped from the top 10 completely and such old games are above it. On the other hand, maybe that just means that there is a huge drop from Madden to number 2 on that list and August was just a slow sales month in general at retail.

Madden is always going to be on top in August. It’s an otherwise dead month for new games. I bet the list would look really different after Madden if you could see accurate digital sales across all platforms.

Yeah, you’re never going to see anything very exciting in an August NPD list.

For comparison purposes, here’s NPD from August 2005:

  1. PS2. Madden NFL 06 - 1,461,380
  2. XBX. Madden NFL 06 - 682,665
  3. PS2. NCAA Football 06 - 121,553
  4. XBX. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike - 94,889
  5. NDS. Nintendogs: Dachshund and Friends - 81,979
  6. GBA. Pokemon Emerald - 81,239
  7. GCN. Madden NFL 06 - 80,939
  8. NDS. Nintendogs: Labrador and Friends - 67,285
  9. XBX. Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - 62,273
  10. NDS. Nintendogs: Chihuahua and Friends - 60,463
  11. GBA. Dragon Ball GT: Transformation - 60,141
  12. XBX. NCAA Football 06 - 59,063
  13. XBX. Darkwatch - 51,952
  14. PS2. Lego Star Wars - 50,557
  15. PS2. Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - 47,844
  16. NDS. Advance Wars: Dual Strike - 44,293
  17. PSP. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition - 41,980
  18. PS2. Destroy All Humans! - 40,988
  19. PS2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 37,796
  20. PS2. Medal of Honor: European Assault - 36,127

It didn’t make the list last month. They sold millions of copies in May.

Nice, Nintendogs: Chihuahua and Friends made the top 10!

I dunno, that list doesn’t look too bad with Until Dawn, Batman: AK, and Rare Replay in there.
