Battlefield 2042 - DICE Goes Back to the Future, Just Not the 2142 Future

Smoke and medics go together like peas and carrots.

Smoke plus a turret/robo dog and me with a knife makes for some fun when defending a point as well. Lot’s of running around and freaking out while I just stab everyone in the smoke.

BF2042 Play it your way! Should be their tagline.

Sounds very much like a case of whether you like the experience enough to ignore the problems, or whether the problems are enough to outweigh any possible enjoyment. From what I’ve read (haven’t played it, or bought it) the issues that are consistently raised and which no one disputes would make me ragequit. So, yeah, wait on this one.

Any Battlefield game is a bit of a rorschach test. Hell, most games in general are exactly that. You can find out a lot about a man’s soul by how much copium he’s willing to drink while playing any videogame.

Still have a couple of hours left on my Series S trial. Other than the initial issue with disconnects until I removed cross-play, I’ve had very few problems. I’m not a shooter savant, so I haven’t noticed any bad gunplay. Or good for that matter. It’s just there. Maybe if I were a better player I’d notice shots not registering that should, but so far I haven’t seen problems here.

I’m still working out the Specialist stuff, but since it seems I can adjust the loadouts to whatever I want it isn’t a big deal yet. That said, I’d prefer to just pick an avatar and make it how I want.

The only time I’ve had the game crash is when I tried the PC trial and it took forever to load the map and just as I jumped off the heli the game crashed. It was running a bit choppier than on my Xbox too, so I haven’t gone back to the PC to try again.

Now the maps can have way too much open space. Especially at the start of a round and trying to get somewhere where the action is. But once the round starts I don’t mind this as there ends up being 2 or 3 hotspots where I can jump in even if these hotspots are pretty far away from each other if I wanted to try running from one to the other.

I still love me some vehicle assisting where I take one of the smaller guns and shoot while the driver/pilot controls the vehicle.

All in all, I get the good BF vibes and even picked up the control scheme pretty quickly (I don’t find it nearly as confusing as the CoD scheme). It did take me looking for the ‘crouch’ button though. I have no idea how I never tried (or noticed it when I did) the B button, but I felt like a moron when I finally looked it up.

Every match today I’m getting “connection timeout” disconnects when playing. Bah!

The interiors of buildings in this game look so barren and boring. I know Frostbite can do clutter. It’s been done in previous Battlefield games. And I realize this isn’t CoD so the focus isn’t on CQC in buildings with lots of decorative bits, but nothing in 2042 looks used or lived-in at all.

If you go back to BF4, most of those buildings were like this too. They definitely don’t spend a lot of dev resources on the building interiors. I guess when you’re making such expansive maps, there has to be more bandwidth there than they have for that?

At this point, I’d rather see them spend resources on more ground clutter outside the buildings.

I was tempted to get back into Battlefield as a protest against AB, and then… yea.

This game has a lot of problems, one being the older maps in PORTAL are more fun than the new maps.

I think the raison d’etre of Battlefield is probably choice. Choosing a server(and choosing to stay on/leave a server); Choosing a side; Choosing a class; Choosing a gun; Choosing a spawn point; Choosing a vehicle.
And this game throws much of that away in the vein of what its competitors (and battle royale) have done → streamlining.

It doesn’t make it bad so much as it makes it the same (and different from prior battlefields). The game is perfectly playable. I hopped into two rounds last night and had an ok time of it. But I played what feels to be only one of three maps available(Orbital, the other two being the snow one and the city one). Are there more maps? I dunno, i havent played them. I even played orbital twice because that’s what the server decided for me. We probably could have bounced and tried another game, but maybe it also would have be orbital. Maybe they were all orbital. Who knows?

Maybe this is the critical sin the game commits: it doesn’t know its customers. This game wants to be part battle-royale, part…i dunno, CoD? And doesn’t remember or really respect its roots. And it doesn’t seem to know or care what its core customers want. Character quips? It works great in Apex, but it doesnt feel right in battlefield.

In the end, ya, they can patch it (and they will). Heh, maybe it emphasizes the most central battlefield concept ever, the one ingrained in every version since BF42: One step forward, two steps back.

As an aside, does anyone remember how many maps dropped with 42? I’m gonna go by memory and see what i can come up with: (desert) gazala, alamein, (pacific) midway, coral sea, iwo jima…oh, and that other pacific map that i cant recall the name of, with the island and the subs on either side…Eastern Front (stalingrad, kursk, kiev, berlin)…Western front(omaha beach, market garden, bulge). Did i get them all? feels like i missed a desert one maybe and a western front one? I’ll go look it up…

what i missed:

tobruk, wake island, kharkov, bocage - guadalcanal was the one i was thinking of, but couldnt name.

Oh, and kiev doesn’t exist, i guess it was kharkov i was thinking of (i vaguely recalled they both began with k, with one having a hill with spawns on either side, and the other just a large field)

It seems someone flipped a switch at DICE and enabled the ability to gather Mastery kills against AI in solo/coop mode.

Perfectly playable? :) I have a hard time going through a play session where I don’t get a bug where I can’t spawn, a bug where I can’t respawn/revive, spawn with no loadout, spawn and can’t shoot my guns, etc.

I spent two hours troubleshooting an issue where every single time I spawned, my gun was in a rotating fire mode (single/burst/auto) and could not be changed. So in one life I’d be stuck in single fire mode and then when I respawn I would be in burst, then auto, that sort of thing. I tried blowing out all my settings and cache folders twice. Tried doing a repair of the game install, tried uninstalling/reinstalling, nothing. Couldn’t find anything online either.

I ended up figuring out the bug, thankfully. In case anyone else runs into it: the bug seems to be triggered when you set a mouse button to either toggle underbarrel or switch fire mode. Maybe others, but those two for sure. And unfortunately, due to a another bug, it seems you can’t remove those mouse bindings. Clicking on a binding to delete it, the game say to hold the Xbox menu button instead of ESC like it does for keyboard keybinds. I didn’t have an Xbox controller plugged in but I did have one in the house, so I plugged it in and while the game detected it, holding the menu button did nothing. Restarted the game and tried again, nothing. Tried holding ESC as well just in case, nothing. Guess those keybinds can’t be changed right now once they’re set.

Anyway, a third blowout of my settings file and making sure not to assign MMB to fire mode and I’m back in business, finally. I’m just ribbing you, but the game feels far from perfectly playable to me. ;)

There are seven maps but it’s been lopsided in what I get as well. Yesterday all I got was Renewal over and over. Today it’s been four matches of Manifest and one Orbital, nothing else.

Yep, just tried it out. Still have xp capped at 25k or so, but unlocked a bunch of stuff for the pp-29. Had to restart the game to see the new attachments, but they were there.

lol, but you did play it. I didnt say it was a perfect game ;)

The last Battlefield I had played before this one was BF4, I skipped BF1 and 5. Since I have an EA Play Pro sub going right now I decided to grab BF5 and give it a spin. I’m sick to death of the WW2 setting but my goodness does 2042 feel even worse in comparison. I felt like I had more interesting infantry gameplay in the single match I played of BF5 than I have my entire time in 2042 so far.

Since that game is new to me as well and there still seems to be a lot of people playing, I might just give that one some attention while 2042 cooks for a while longer. Like… a year or two, hah.

So I am level 15 and sorta bored with this already, wtf did DICE do to my Battlefield?

did you try bf42 on the portal? I dunno, for what it’s worth, i’ve enjoyed that more than conquest

If you’re delving into the past, then play Battlefield 1. It’s the best game they’ve ever done. Play Operations, not Conquest. Learn more history. Clear out trenches. Destroy snipers with headshots. Jump from a zeppelin. Be amazed by everything.

Yup. It’s a toss-up for me whether I like Battlefield 4 (after all the updates) or Battlefield 1 more. They are both excellent.
