I already used my once per lifetime Apollo magic.
The Galactica was a museum piece, its pilots ceremonial rather than certified. The Cylon attack was sudden and shocking. Realistically this had all odds to end poorly.
But Apollo took pride in his job, as both pilot and CAG, so when the unexpected trial by fire came, they were ready.
