Daredevil: Born Again - Disney+

Jon Bernthal is back as the vigilante known as The Punisher.

And among other retooled elements, Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson are rumored to have been hired to reprise their roles of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson.

Cool!

I hope this is a great show.

It was never a good idea to reboot this without Foggy and Karen, so I’m glad to hear that may be corrected.

Amen, I said something along those lines in whatever MCU thread we were discussing this in before.

I don’t know why they thought it was a good idea to drop them initially, and when news broke late last year that they were going back to the drawing board on Born Again I couldn’t believe they wouldn’t take that opportunity to correct the mistake. Hope this has been fixed finally.

Really hopeful for this (actually still watching the original series on D+ as well)

Ok, since he appears to be coming back and I never watched the 2 Punisher seasons, perhaps its worth checking those out?

Thing is, his story in DD season 2 didn’t do much for me. He just seemed like a Death Wish / revenge porn / 2nd Amendment American nutcase with the usual tragic backstory of cute dead kids as motivation.

Is there anything in his solo show that goes beyond that or make him more sympathetic?

The Punisher stuff was the very best Marvel stuff Netflix did.

I’ve read a few positive reactions like that, thus the question. I mean, Death Wish & those movies are also pretty popular, but they’re not for me.

In DD his violent offensive approach has some cool moments, but is mostly shown to be wrong. In his own show, there are themes critical of his violence and the military, but because he’s the only hero and the main character, his approach comes across as more necessary than in DD. I’m guessing you wouldn’t like it. (This is based on season 1.)

Thank you very much for that assessment! Maybe it just isn’t for me…

EDIT: On the other hand, I’m just busy watching (& enjoying) Reacher season 2 and he’s also happy enough to kill thugs. So perhaps I’m being too quick to judge.

Born Again is one of, if not my single all-time fave comic arc. As much as I dig the Netflix DD series, I’m having a tough time imaging this translating well to live action without some major re-writes. Nuke is as 80’s as it gets.

Also, outside of the Brubaker run, Born Again truly nails the depiction of Captain America like nothing else. He was sparely used, but Frank Miller’s Cap really captured his out of time melancholy, his power and his principles in a manner rarely achieved. I don’t see how they can do anything but write Cap out of this version, which would be a shame.

I just now read Born Again thanks to my friend @marquac lining me up with recommendations. The Daredevil stuff, which I was reading because he was walking me through the development of Elektra, wasn’t really working for me until I got to Born Again. At which point the whole character kind of clicked and fell into place for me. I’m still 95% in it for the Elektra, but Born Again really brought me around on the character of Daredevil himself. I can see why you’d speak so highly about it.

Which leads me to my question: there’s no way this TV show will hold up for me if my only frame of reference for Daredevil is Miller’s run in the 80s, right? I mean, I loved Charlie Cox in the one episode of She-Hulk where he appeared, and I can see he’d make a fun Matt Murdoch, but aside from a charming lead actor, how well does the Daredevil show channel what made Born Again such a compelling read for you?

Also happy to hear from anyone else on the subject, too! If it took Born Again to bring me around on Daredevil, is the Netflix series for me?

It doesn’t really? As you wrote, the lead is charming and well cast, but I read the Miller Daredevil when I was in high school. A lot of the ‘compelling’ bits have to do w/ the fact that I was 16-17. I still think it’s fantastic, but no doubt the early imprint affects my judgment a bit.

The Netflix DD clearly is in service to Miller’s run, and I appreciate how close they try to hew to the original page, but y’know it’s a superhero yarn. Even though Daredevil is ‘street level’ and more grounded, it’s still a dude in tights with super senses. Also, Netflix doesn’t have Mazzucchelli’s art. Reality is a pale comparison.

Your regular reminder that when the Disney MCU borrows a title or plot idea from the comics, the end results have been only vaguely related to the source. For example, Civil War bears only a very rough resemblance to the original event in the comics. I wouldn’t expect Daredevil: Born Again will hew any closer to the Miller run than the Netflix show did. (Which is to say: close in themes, but not in plot beats.)

Yup. Expect only one or two shots in the movie/show to mirror the comics, but otherwise it’s just the general feel.

Those two characters annoyed met, initially. Particularly Foggy, though with him I think it was just the actor not doing it for me.

But then I got used to them and don’t think the show would be the same without them.

I hope this show does well, Netflix focusing on quantity and producing so many Marvel shows when they should have just focused on DD.

I enjoyed Luke Cage, but it was nothing special. Jessica Jones’ first season could have been really good had it been a few episodes shorter. I can’t even remember if I saw the second one. Something tells me I did, but it obviously wasn’t memorable to me. Iron Fist was terrible. Defenders? It was ok. At least it was only 4 episodes. I didn’t see Punisher.

Thats a shame, because it was up there with Daredevil in quality.

I’ll check it out at some point.

I don’t have Disney currently, but will sub for a while to catch this new Daredevil show. Been waiting for when I have more time on my hands to also catch some of the Star Wars shows, too.

I really think Marvel should have pivoted to the street level heroes in the films once they finished Endgame. That step back to the ground level would have been an excellent change of pace toward something that rooted people back to Earth for awhile.

In the comics, the Cosmic Events come at a slower clip, and often while they’re not happening there were really strong storylines where the Kingpin was being a bad MFer and it totally drew you away from what was happening in space.

Instead the films stayed cosmic, and they have only put the streets on TV. Heck, even Cap was a show to get The Falcon into the suit. That should have been a film, and stayed smaller with a similar cast and plot.

Ah well… at least we’re still getting Marvel.
