I don’t get the fawning over Beto. If he’d actually won, maybe, but his fundraising was more a result of people wanting Cruz out than anything special about him, IMHO.
I really liked her approach to this especially for the following reasons:
- Her friend’s question was openly hostile, and that’s a hostility he can have because of white privilege (more on that later)
- She is very clear these are specific events not an inclusive list, and they still hurt… they always hurt when going through them.
- She does say it but by pointing out specific ages as she does, she tells you just how early this hits home and how the experiences are basically a lifetime of experiencing it. Every stage of life introduces a unique form the lows of humanity

Her mother sounds extraordinary, and she is extraordinary in a way that a lot of people try to require and demand every person of minority status to be. That if you get hit by a rock or some other conflict, you offer them a hand. If they threaten to kill you, ask them to church If they try to derail your career, take them out for coffee. If they signal you out in a group of people doing the same thing over and over again and you do it too but get targeted, don’t get angry.

White privlege is also being allowed to be flawed, and not to be sniped from the sidelines when you reveal you are just human.
I say this because she says her mother was badass, and the fact is, she is badass too. She is extraordinary, and while her abilities as a highly educated woman and a writer has clearly given her a great forum and message to communicate her experiences, not everyone is going to have that, nor should they have to have it.
I’ve seen that explain to me, prove to me, my white privilege is a thing, and just wonder how Jason actually took her answer.

We’ve also heard the story about how socialism leads directly to millions of dead people, but I’m not personally concerned that Cortez is going to usher in the new killing fields.
I think this might be more of a concern if she weren’t in the legislature. A president or governor who spends too much time talking will become ineffective. But in Congress, one is ineffective if they aren’t talking.
