Disney World still re-opening - how many will it infect?

…for 8 or 12 hours.

You couldn’t pay me to go to an amusement park, or anywhere with a lot of people, until this thing is over.

I wouldn’t go right now even if I could (Canada / US border still closed). But if there is one company I would trust the clean the hell out of everything, out would be Disney.

Hey now, that’s a slander … of mass transit. There isn’t evidence to support the idea that riding the subway is extremely high risk.

In Paris, a recent study found that none of the city’s 150 coronavirus clusters from early May to early June originated on the city’s transit systems, Le Parisien newspaper reported.

It’s a similar situation in Japan, where researchers failed to connect a single cluster to the country’s commuter trains, said Hitoshi Oshitani, a virologist and public health expert at Tohoku University.

The vast majority of the clusters were instead traced to gyms, bars, live music venues, karaoke rooms and similar establishments where people come in close contact with one another, Oshitani said in an email to E&E News.

A more recent report concludes the same for NYC.

Riding a subway is obviously higher risk than staying at home … but the evidence says it’s also safer than going to a bar or indoor concert.

My own assumption is that these studies timing, after masking became mandatory, means they tell us more about masks than normal public transit use. There were studies in China and Hong Kong in February that showed cluster transmission on unmasked bus rides, no reason to think a subway is significantly better.

You can read studies all day. All I need to see is someone sneeze into their hand and the use the same hand to grab a pole. Tell me that what I saw was an isolated incident. No thanks.

You still have some control over the situation (even if you did not see the person sneeze and grab). Don’t touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly as soon as possible after using public transportation, use hand sanitizer until then.

Easy for me to say - I have no need to ride public transport. But my son rides the MTA once a week or so (he also gets tested 2x/week by his school).

All I can say on that is they supposedly have hand sanitizer everywhere. I won’t hang around in bathrooms washing hands, probably (although if it’s empty that’s fine) but will be liberally using the sanitizer.

Dude, I know. I lived in NY for 50 years. Not touching my face is second nature now. But with parks there is another solution. Stay home.

They’re operating at about 25% capacity, and you can’t go to more than one park in a day (no park hopping). The parks are about as empty as they’ll ever be. Especially on weekdays.

I’ll be able to give a better report once I get back. Course, we’ll all be worrying about something else that week (we get back on 11/1), so no one may read what I post…

Sorry - my bad. I failed to scroll back far enough to see that the thread about parks was still actually discussing parks. I thought it was a typical qt3 thread :)

I mean, good luck and I hope you have fun, but I still won’t even step into a grocery store for anything less than an emergency. Anywhere there are people, I’m not. It doesn’t help that mask adoption around here is so low. Hopefully Disney is enforcing the hell out of that.

I mean sure, but what we’re talking about is the post-spread, post-mask world.

And that’s cool. I’m not mocking anyone for not doing things I do. I still don’t go most places - haven’t eaten inside a restaurant since early March - just passed through on the way to the outdoor tables, or on the way out to pay. But I’ve gone grocery shopping once a week every week since then. Even work a food pantry once a month when they have evening hours. So this isn’t as big a stretch for me - although I’m still a little nervous. And don’t get me wrong - if I see anyone without a mask, or someone wearing it around their chin, I’m reporting their ass ASAP.

That’s just performing a public service! :)

Yeah, sincerely, have fun and be safe.

So Disney has a huge advantage here that the other places don’t have or are unwilling to implement.

They have people spending a lot of money to go to those parks. People who do not want to be removed from the park after they’ve spent that much to be there. They will remove you if you try and skirt their rules. It’s not like WalMart where they require masks and the consequence of walking around the store not wearing one is… nothing.

If their rules aren’t working, they change them. They had something going on with allowing people not to wear masks if they had a drink or something with them. Naturally people abused that rule by dragging around not finished drinks for hours, taking them into lines even, so they changed that policy. You don’t get to pretend drink and eat so you don’t have to wear a mask anymore.

They implemented capacity limits, and they mean it. People are bitching all over the place about these capacity limits, but Disney isn’t budging. They want this to work.

There were questions about what kinds of “masks” actually work, so Disney took the safe side and refused to accept the questionable ones. End of story.

At the end of the day, if it’s wear a mask ride the rides or get escorted out by security to spend the rest of your vacation stuck in your hotel room, it seems like visitors will choose wearing the masks.

I like and hate what Disney does, like a lot of people do, but in this case, it really seems like they’ve taken a do what we say or take a hike police which they can do on private property where they hold your vacation hostage. It’s probably one of the safer places to do this sort of thing right now which… doesn’t make it safe. I’m not going to do it. Hell I won’t risk getting an airplane or going to an airport where some MAGA idiot is about to throw a mask fit before you even get there but…

There isn’t a lot of evidence that this is being passed easily on surfaces, in food, or even outdoors when not real close to people. If Disney is taking a throw your ass out approach to any mask shenanigans, well it seems like we’d all be better off if more businesses took the same approach.

I guess I missed the part where Florida wasn’t holding people from other states hostage in their rooms for 2 weeks… I thought that was a real issue for that park. And for anyone who hasn’t been to Disneyland and Disney World, Disney World has more open space. Disneyland park let itself get so crowded they started removing places to sit which was never a good sign.

I was impressed when saw a report of Disneyworld re-opening at their safety protocols, I’m glad they were successful. I do think Nesrie right, the consequences of being thrown out of are pretty severe, it cost $100 for admission to Disney parks. If dad or mom are being assholes and get tossed out they also have to take shit from their kids and spouse, even if it is just very disappointed looks.

To me an equal big story is the economic story. We know that attendance has been lower than expected, I believe they are operating at 25% capacity and I recently checked you can get reservations for Disneyworld pretty much for the entire month. (That’s not normal.). Disney laid off 20% of their workers. I question if they are even operating above marginal cost. I.e. is the cost of salary for their workers, additional utilities expenses, cleaning supplies, above the revenue they are bringing in.

Disney is actually very unique environment. Pre-covid days I didn’t care too much if a restaurant or theater was 50% full or 90% full (above 90% you have to wait, get bad seats etc.). My one experience staying at Disneyland Hotel was that you got let in an hour before the park opened. That hour and 1/2 before it got crowed was blissful, my girlfriend and I ran from ride to it was glorious. So I know how much nicer it is going to Disneyworld at 25% capacity.

I think many business are operating on the field of dream models. “If we open they will come.” I think Disney is a case study that supports Gov. Newsome view we really can’t have an economy until we get the numbers to a low level. one new case per 100K. At that level is possible to do contact tracing and isolation. It is also the level that I know from my personal experience, my anxiety level about catching the virus is low enough that I’m will to go to a restaurant or someone’s house. Above that I’m constantly worried.

I’ve been to Disney 3x. 2x in October and 1x in July. The October trips were much better weather-wise, and if they do the trick-or-treat nights while you’re there, I highly recommend it. We had a lot of fun with the little ones those nights.
